Portrait Painting.  Mr. Saxton:—Your townsman, Mr. G. W. Collins, has, for a short time, been engaged in Portrait Painting in our village, to, I believe, the general satisfaction of all who employed him.—His likenesses are excellent, giving clearly the delineation of the features, and a full expression of the countenance.  Some of his paintings drawn here are almost true as life.  The painting is neatly executed, and performed with an expert and masterly hand.  Mr. Collins, we believe, is destined to become a proficient in his profession, and is worthy the patronage of an intelligent and tasteful community.  He is not merely an artist, but nature has bestowed bountifully upon him the requisite facilities for a limner.  Genius should be encouraged in the ornamental and beautiful as well as in the useful arts.

G. W. Collins’ Daguerrean Rooms.  G. W. Collins respectfully announces to the citizens of Urban and the public generally, that he has recently fitted up an immense “Northern Light,” especially for Daguerrean purposes, and is prepared to execute pictures in a style of beauty seldom attained, and no where excelled.

Miniatures executed and put up in all the various styles of the art, from the smallest Lockets, Pins, and Finger Rings, to the largest sizes for frames; and taken at such prices as cannot fail to please.  Rooms open at all hours.  Pictures taken every day, with out regard to weather.

Daguerreotype Miniatures, when correctly taken, preserve the features which disease and death destroy in a few years, and which our memories retain but imperfectly, and for a short time are made to abide with us.  Who can tell how much influence a venerable, benevolent parent’s portrait exerts on the family possessing it?  They are, therefore, at all times desirable menentoos (sic.) of absent or deceased friends, but more especially in the event of death, they are above to surviving relatives.  No family should be without them.

The Daguerrean Art—G. W. Collins.  Messrs. Editors:  It was my pleasure to sit a few evenings ago, for a picture in the Gallery of this gentleman, situated one door west of Stadler’s Clothing Store, up stairs.  At a great expense he has procured, and has now in successful operation, a new Camera, of surpassing beauty and elegance, which far exceeds the old ones so long in use by the professor of this art.  To the eve of the most casual observer, the pictures taken by the two instruments, the contrast is strikingly manifest.  This new machinery works to a charm: while the operations of the old ones, in the opinion of those whose knowledge of them may be relied upon, was in a great measure unsatisfactory and untrue.  The Daguerrean Art, although by many considered of no real value to the public or to individuals, is in my opinion a stride in science, equal to any other of the present age.  No one who possesses a particle of attachment to friends and relations, can fail to appreciate the untold pleasure—though it be a melancholy one—of retracing the features of the loved and lost; and I envy not the man, who for the sake of a small pittance, would deny himself this great after comfort.

It should be gratifying to the pride of our citizens, that one has arisen in our midst, born and raised on the sod of Champaign, whose ambition and genius have led him to anticipate and supply its wants in this valuable Art; and we mistake the spirit of her people, if they do not reward his efforts by a liberal and enlightened patronage.  Mr. Collins is ever on the alert to grasp & apply every improvement in the art, without stopping to compute the cost: his desire is to please: when that is accomplished, he seems to have attained his greatest ambition.  This is the true position of the Artist.  When his mind and heart are engaged, failure is an impossibility.

We believe the public of Urbana, and of Champaign county, will foster the growth and advancement of these praiseworthy efforts on his part, to build up a Gallery of Art in this place, which shall be a credit to himself and his fellow citizens.  B.

Daguerreanism. Mr. Editor:—Suffer me to call the attention of the public, and especially the admirers of the fine arts, to the merits of one of our citizens, Mr. G. W. Collins, who is now engaged in taking Daguerreotype Likenesses in our village, as one of the most successful operators that I have had the pleasure of visiting.  I think his pictures will compare favorably with the best pictures taken in any of our large cities.  If any objection at all can be found against them, it would be that he makes his subjects look too much like themselves.  I hope this young artist will meet with all the success his distinguished skill demands.  Mc.

Collins has fitted up new Daguerrean Rooms in Weaver’s Block, where he is better prepared than ever to take accurate likenesses of the human face.  He has acquired great notoriety as an artist, and those wishing good pictures of themselves or families, would do well to give him a call.  See his notice.

The Rooms will be open from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m., at which hours the public are invited to call.

Daguerreotype Gallery.  We noticed very briefly in our last week’s issue, (more for want of time and space, than a better reason,) the Daguerrean Gallery of Mr. G. W. Collins.

The room which he now occupies, is a large and commodious one, and furnished in an elegant and tasteful manner.  His facilities, too, for picture-taking are greatly increased, having the combined advantage of both side and sky-lights.

We do not know that we laud too highly the artistic skill of Mr. Collins, by classing him with the first Artists of this “day and age” of the World.  All who have seen his pictures unite in awarding to him this praise; and those of our citizens who desire to—”Secure the shadow ere the substance fades,” Are no longer required to go to cities and larger towns for such.

Stereoscopic Daguerreotypes.  We are glad to see that our friend Collins, who, by the way, is always up with the improvements of the day, has introduced the Stereoscopic Daguerreotype.  The likeness with this is a likeness—a fac similie of the original.  To those who are not acquainted with the effect of the Stereoscopic, we would say that the picture, instead of being flat, stands out from the plate like a marble statute—in fact, it presents you with a model of yourself.  All who have occasion to have their likenesses taken should examine this method, and our word for it, they’ll have no other.

By the way, we hope our friend Collins will be particularly polite to all the ladies who may visit his rooms, and put himself to a good deal of trouble and expense to accommodate them.  Ladies always require and expect a little extra attention, you know.  “Mattie Lee,” in behalf of herself and other ladies, sent us a note the other day, complaining that Mr. C. did not “soft soap” them enough when they visited his rooms.  He will do well, therefore to give them a little extra attention hereafter, and thus remove all cause of complaint on that score.

Blank, Pupil of Ole Bull, from New York, an accomplished Violinist, is prepared to give lessons to those who desire to play that lovely instrument.  He is able to satisfy all of his qualifications, and learn pupils by a new method, to become good players in half the time required by the old method of teaching. 

Terms $5.00 for 15 lessons, or 50 cents for a single lesson, payable in advance.  He can be found at Collins’ Daguerrean Rooms.

Ill., is one of the most successful operators in the Western country, and is deserving of great praise for his perseverance in attaining to his skill he now exhibits, and is well worthy the support he receives.  Mr. G. W. Collins, of Urbana, Ohio, is also a most excellent artist, and has our warmest wishes for his success.

Pen Jottings Taken On The Fair Ground Yesterday…Fine Arts Hall.  This has been fitted up under the supervision of Mr. Allen Smith, Jr. in the fine taste which characterizes this well known artist, although every thing was not quite arranged.  We think we hazard nothing in saying that a more charming display of artistical good things, has not graced any previous fair.  The oil paintings both on canvas and photographic, were highly creditable to the artists Mr. Smith had his usual variety of finely colored heads, lifelike and beautiful.  Nothing which we could say would add many thing to his well established fame.  The death of the stag from Landseer will bear looking at more than once.  Mr. Ryder exhibits some very fine photographs also colored by Mr. Alonzo Pease which were much admired.  The two finest pictures in the room and those which attracted the most attention were two heads of Fremont, one a photograph by North, colored in oil by Smith, and one by Ryder, colored also in oil by Pease.  (We noticed as singular that although there were some 6 or 7 pictures of Fremont there was none of Buchanan!)  Boisseau also exhibited a number of oil colored Photographs which are much admired.  Daguerreotypes, Photographs, Ambrotypes, etc. were there from North, Ryder, Boisseau, of Cleveland, Bisbee of Columbus, and G. W. Collins of Urbana, Ohio, Spherotypes from Stimpson, also of Cleveland.

Carvalho, Solomon Nunes (1815-1894).  Portrait and Landscape painter, daguerreotypist, and photographer; born in Charleston (S. C.), April 27, 1815.  The artist’s father, David N. Carvalho (1784-1860), a watchmaker and merchant in Charleston for many years, moved in 1828 to Baltimore, where he established a marble paper Manufactory.  The family moved again in 1835, to Philadelphia, where they remained for the next fifteen years.  Solomon’s career as an artist began in Philadelphia about 1838 and centered there for the next decade, though he also worked in Charleston and Washington in the early 1840’s.  S. N. Carvalho was again in Philadelphia in 1849, when he exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, but the following year the whole family, including Solomon’s wife and two year old son David, moved to Baltimore, where they made their home until the elder Carvalho’s death in 1860.  In 1851-52 Solomon again paid a professional visit to Charleston.  His next professional venture was his two year service as artist-photographer with John C. Fremont’s expedition to the Far West (1853-54), Carvalho’s own account of which was published in 1857.  During the latter half of the 1850’s the artist worked in Baltimore, but soon after his father’s death he moved to NYC, accompanied by his wife and four sons—David, Jerrite, Jacob, and Solomon (ages 12, 10, 8 and 4, respectively, in 1860).  Carvalho was listed as an artist or photographer in NYC directories until about 1880 and thereafter as president of the Carvalho Heating and Super-heating Co. or simply as inventor.  He died in NYC in 1894…

Gallery Of Fine Arts.  No. 205 Baltimore Street.  S. N. Carvalho, Artist, respectfully informs the inhabitants of Baltimore and its vicinity, that he has become the proprietor of the establishment formerly known as the Plumbe National Gallery, over The Jewelry Store of Messrs. R. & A. Campbell.  He has procured the services of Mr. T. O. Smith, the principal operator at Root’s Gallery of Philadelphia, who will attend to the production of an entirely new style Daguerreotype, patented under the name of the Crayon Daguerreotype, never before introduced in this city.  The great advantage which this style of picture possesses over any other, is that the picture can be seen equally well in any light, and as distinctly when hung against a wall as the finest miniature.  The whole strength of the Instrument is thrown on the head, and the artistic distribution of light and shadow give it the appearance of one of the celebrated Italian Crayon Drawings.

S. N. Carvalho will attend to the Painting department.  Portraits and Miniatures, either from life or Daguerreotype, executed in a manner which he is certain will give satisfaction.  In connection with the above, the Gallery will be adorner with choice works of art, both ancient and modern, affording to the citizens and ladies of Baltimore a fashionable and pleasing resort, without any pecuniary outlay.  The establishment is now being newly fitted up, and will be opened on the first of June.

The charges for the Crayon Daguerreotype will be less than those charged for ordinary Pictures, by the old process.  The subscriber depends solely on the merits of the Pictures produced at this establishment for the success which he anticipates.

Daguerreotypes—Mr. S. N. Carvalho, has recently opened his Gallery of Fine Arts at No. 205 Baltimore street, where he is prepared to take likenesses which, for superiority of execution and strictness of resemblance, cannot be surpassed.  Mr. C. has adopted the Crayon style, by which the daguerreotype is made to resemble a finely executed engraving.  By it, too, the artistic affect of light and shadow is more clearly developed; the bust is lost in the back ground, in imitation of crayon drawing; and the eyes, heretofore considered a very difficult feature to imitate successfully, are brought out with a distinctness and close resemblance which must satisfy all.  Another thing claimed for this style is that a large sized picture may be taken on a plate of one third the dimensions required by the old process.  Mr. Carvalho will also execute colored daguerreotypes when desired, for which his experience as an artist renders him peculiarly qualified.  He is assisted in his beautiful art by Mr. Smith, whose knowledge of chemistry enables him to prepare the plates with such sensitiveness that children may be taken in the short space of from one to three seconds.  The likeness of the Hon. Henry Clay, John Swift, Esq. Mayor of Philadelphia, and a number of other distinguished gentlemen, which may be found at Mr. C.’s rooms, will be readily recognized.  All in want of first rate pictures should not fail to give him a call.  Visitors will find the rooms handsomely furnished, and while waiting for pictures may amuse themselves on one of Messrs. Wise & Bro.’s fine tone pianos with the improved touch.

Improved Daguerreotypes.  S. N. Carvalho’s Gallery Of Fine Arts, No. 205 Baltimore street.  The subscriber informs the public generally that he has erected a building with a combination of sky and side lights, where he can (from his knowledge of light and shadow, having made it his study for 15 years,) produce Daguerreotype likenesses which will compare with any taken in the United States.  His new crayon process is admirably adapted for gentlemen’s portraits.  He invites the public to call and view his specimens, and will in all instances, if allowed, take a picture of a gentleman or lady to show the style of his work, without any charge.

Children of any age taken in a few seconds.

Daguerreotypes.—There is no branch of art in which more improvement has been effected in so short a time as that of Photography, or Daguerreotyping.  Among those who are foremost in the adoption of all new progressions in this beautiful science in Mr. S. N Carvalho, who has lately introduced here the Crayon process, by which his pictures are made to closely resemble a fine engraving.—He has recently much enlarged and made important additions to his already excellent sky light, and sitters may rely on having their likenesses taken in the most correct and life-like manner, and in the highest style of the art.  Mr. Carvalho’s rooms are at 205 Baltimore street, and will be fond to be handsomely furnished, with piano and other musical instruments for the entertainment of visitors.

Mr. Carvalho’s Daguerreotypes and Oil Paintings.—Within the last year, numerous important improvements in the process of Daguerreotyping have been introduced, which we have taken occasion from time to time, to notice.  Among the latest is a new style resembling a highly finished miniatures on ivory, several specimens of which are on exhibition at the rooms of Mr. S. N. Carvalho, 230 King street.  Mr. C. is a native of this city, where he has returned, after an absence of a few years, with recruited health, and experience in the profession to which he has devoted himself, with the view of taken up his permanent residence among us.  His studio has  been only recently opened to the public, but he has already accumulated a respectable number of likenesses of well known residents of this city both in Photographic and Oil paintings; his familiarity as a professional artist with the philosophical principles of light and shadow, enabling him to combine the study and practice of both to great advantage.  An exquisitely delicate and life-like fancy sketch in oil, which he has just completed, is attracting the admiration of his visitors, and considered by many good judges among them to be a highly successful effort, in the delineation of a difficult subject, altitude and expression.  Mr. Carvalho’s rooms are open at all hours of the morning and afternoon for the inspection of ladies and gentlemen desirous of seeing his specimens and improvements in the art.

The Fair and Poultry Exhibition…We have taken a few notes in the more delicate and fine arts to-day.  In Oil Painting, Mr. S. N. Cavalho (sic.), of this city, presents several creditable offerings from his studio-conspicuous among which is a familiar Portrait readily recognized as the weather beaten but expressive countenance of “The Wandering Jew,” a venerable eccentric character well known down town, by his constant presence, and up the road, through the innumerable hieroglyphics traced along the fences, to an indefinite extent, by his hand.  These paintings add no little attraction to the Exhibition.

C.  It has been hitherto necessary to enclose daguerreotypes in cases, and cover them with glass, as the least friction destroyed the work of sun and shadow.  Mr. Carvalho has discovered a perfectly transparent enamel, insoluble by all ordinary agents, a thin coating of which being spread upon a daguerreotype, may be carried about without other protection, or sent by post to any part of the world.  The enamel, produces no perceptible effect upon the picture.

A Discovery And An Improvement.—Mr. Carvalho, a young artist who has won some deserved celebrity at Charleston, S. C. has shown us a specimen of the successful application of a recent discovery of his, which must add, we think great value to the daguerreotype.  It is a process of enamelling,—applied after the picture is taken—by which the impression is permanently secured, and protected from the action of fire, water, or contact of any kind.  Thus protected, the daguerreotype needs no glass, in framing, and it may be transmitted, without injury, by mail, to any distance.  [N. In offering this discovery to the public, Mr. Gurney is deeply impressed with the importance which a hard, transparent; enamel surface must and does add to the intrinsic value of good Daguerreotypes.  It effectually and permanently preserves it from atmospheric action; the picture may be washed, rubbed hard with a soft handererchief or glove, handled with soiled or greasy fingers, the surface of the enamel not sustaining the slightest injury.

Valuable Daguerreotypes of deceased relatives or friends may be thus permanently preserved at a small expense.

To Miniature painters, engravers and artists generally this enamel surface affords facility for tracing, which is a great desideratum.

For transmitting Daguerreotypes in a simple letter to any part of the world, without extra expense for postage, express, &c., thousands of persons will take advantage, as it supercedes the great uncertainty, detention, and expense of ordinary transportation.

Enamel For Daguerreotypes.  A valuable discovery with regard to daguerreotypes has been made by Mr. S. N. Carvalho, an artist of Charleston, S. C,  It has been hitherto necessary to enclose daguerreotypes in cases, and cover them with glass, as the least friction destroyed the work of sun shadow. 

Mr. Charvalho (sic.) has discovered a perfectly transparent enamel, insoluble by all ordinary agents, a thin coating of which being spread upon a daguerreotype, it may be carried about without other protection, or sent by post to any part of the world.  The enamel produces no perceptible effect upon the picture.

Col. Fremont had sufficiently recovered from his indisposition to enable him to resume his winter expedition over the central rout to the Pacific.  He left St. Louis on the 15th to join his company at Old Caw Mission, at which place they were camping.  His party consists of twenty-one men, ten of whom are Delaware Indians.  Some of these Indians have been with Col. Fremont on previous expeditions.  They are picked men of their tribe, and most skillful hunters.  A daguerrean artist goes with the party, who will take sketches of everything worthy to be represented along the route.

Daguerreotypes of The Rocky Mountains.  The Washington correspondent of the New York Times writes: 

Calling upon the world-renowned Col. Fremont, at his residence a few evenings since. I was favored with an exhibition of quite a number of the three hundred daguerreotype views of various points of interest passed by him during his recent expedition to the Rocky Mountains, taken by the Colonel, with the assistance of a young artist who belonged to his party.  I hardly know whether to express more admiration of the perfection of these pictures as a work of art, or of the happy idea which suggested this method of presenting perfectly truthful descriptions of the country through which the explorer passed.  Some of these views present a back-ground of twenty or thirty miles; and, notwithstanding they were all taken in the open air, and under circumstances which make it quite impossible for the artist to avail themselves of some of the chemicals indispensable by Brady or Whitehurst, the latter gentlemen never turned out better specimens of the art than are many of the Colonel’s plates.

Solomon N. Carvalho.  Solomon N. Carvalho, an artist, of No. 479 Mount Hope Place, died at his home on Friday.  Mr. Carvalho was eighty-two years old.  He leaves two sons, S. S. Carvalho, the newspaper man, who lives at Metuchen, N. J., and David N. Carvalho, of No. 42 East One-Hundred-and-thirty-third-st., who is at present in California.

We see it stated in one of our contemporaries, that “New-York has returned to town, and will again take up her residence here for the next eight or nine months;” but we hope before she settles down to the dull, plodding business of life, she will step into the Daguerrean Gallery of Mr. James Brown, No. 181 Broadway, no stairs, and have her features transferred to the plate, while yet in her heyday of loveliness; for a few months of city life will quickly destroy the roses brought out on her cheeks by her late ramble through the hills and dales of the blooming country.

The Exhibition At The Crystal Palace.  XVI.  American Art—Daguerreotypes.  If there be any one department in the whole building which is peculiarly American, and in which the country shines prominent, it is in that of Daguerreotypes, which are exhibited below stairs; and the collection, which is an extensive one, is made up of contributions from almost every section of the Union where the art is practiced.  In contrasting the specimens of art which are taken herewith those taken in European countries, the excellence of American pictures is evident, which is [to] be accounted for by several reasons.  In the first place, American skies are freer from fogs and clouds—from bituminous coal not being much used, the atmosphere of our cities is free from smoke, at least upon the Atlantic coasts.  Then the chemicals and processes are, generally speaking, of a more sensitive character, and the apparatus is more convenient and suitable than that of Europe.  Our little inventions come into play and aid in saving time and developing a good picture, and last, though perhaps not least our people are readier in picking up processes and acquiring the mastery of the art than our trans-Atlantic rivals.  Not that we understand the science better, but the detail of the work is acquired in a shorter time by us, while the enormous practice which our operators enjoy combines to render the daguerreotype art a necessary adjunct to the comfort of life.  Does a child start on the journey of existence and leave his “father’s hall” forthwith the little image is produced to keep his memory green..  Does the daughter accept the new duties of matron, or does the venerated parent descend into the grave; what means so ready to revive their recollection?  Does the lover or the husband go to Australia or California, and not exchange with the beloved one the image of what afforded so much delight to gaze upon?  The readiness with which a likeness may be obtained, the truthfulness of the image and the smallness of cost, render it the current pledge of friendship, and the immense number of operators who are supported by the art in this country shows how widely the love of sun-pictures is diffused.  Several thousand industrious artists and artisans are occupied in the preparation of very pure chemicals, as bromine, iodine, gold salts, hyperphosphate of soda.  Another class prepare silvered plates, cases, buffs, gilding, cut glass, and a hundred little addenda.  Then the manufacture of cameras and the grinding of good lenses is an important branch of the business; for without a camera having good lenses the best operator would fail to produce an image which would be distinct or saleable; and even with a good Voigtlander or Harrison camera, it requires great skill to focus the image; for, strange as it may appear, the point where a good view of the sitter is obtained is not the point best adapted for bringing out a good picture.  In other words the focus of vision and the focus of chemical action are not the same, and hence when we have the one we lose the other.  This is owing to the fact that it is not the rays of color on the solar spectrum which produce the image, but a different set of rays, viz: those of chemical action; and since this is the case, we submit the opinion that it is not possible to obtain a daguerreotype in its natural colors, as Mr. Hill and others have been trying to delude our operators into believing, and leading themselves and others by the [iguis fatuus] of plates tortured into iridescent colors by chemical oxidation.  But we are getting discursive upon this beautiful art, which was intended to subserve many other useful purposes than that of portrait painting.

Everybody known how difficult it is to keep silver from tarnishing, and that the action of the light is to destroy all preparations of silver.  Some of these are more readily acted on by light than others—are more sensitive, as it is termed.  Such are the iodide, bromide, and chloride of silver.  These salts cannot be kept exposed to the light for any reason, even a very short time, without undergoing some change; and when a plate of silver has a thin layer of iodine and bromine on its surface; and is placed in a camera, as soon as the screen is raised the image of the sitter falls on the plate.  The silver plate is acted on unequally, producing the effects of light and shade when brought out, as it is termed, by exposure to the vapor of quicksilver.  It is then fixed or prevented from undergoing further change, by washing it with a solution of gold.

To produce a daguerreotype picture there are five operations necessary.  The first is cleaning the plate.  This is the stumbling block of most operators.  They are not cleanly enough.  Several views in this Exhibition show that the plates were not well enough cleaned.  Never was a maxim more true than the old one, that “cleanliness is a virtue”—when it has reference to daguerreotyping.  The second the second is the foundation of the sensitive iodide of silver over the surface of the plate.  The third is the adjusting the plate in the camera obscura, for the purpose of receiving the impression.  The fourth is the bringing out the photographic picture, which is invisible when the plate is taken from the camera.  The fifth, and last, is to remove the excess of sensitive coating, and thus prevent that susceptibility to change under luminous influence which would otherwise exist and ultimately effect the picture.  The second operation is that which gives tone and warmth to the picture, and when performed by skillful hands makes a daguerreotype a beautiful piece of art.  The clearness and distinctness of the image is produced by the third process when carefully conducted, and the whole picture should be distinct over the whole plate.  These remarks will serve to illustrate the subjoined notes upon the collections in the Exhibition.

Mr. Lawrence exhibited a case in which softness of tone and distinctness of image are united with artistic arrangement.  The latter quality is specially noticeable in “The Three Ages.”  The mechanical execution of these pictures is unexcelled.  These pictures of Mr. L. were exhibited in London.  Mr. Brady’s collection is not very large, but there are a few very good pictures exhibited by him.  In Gurney’s collection the coloring of the background has a fine effect; there are some very well executed portraits, among which is one of Mr. Forrest, worth notice as a work of art: taken as a Whole there is less softness and more distinctness in this collection than in that of Lawrence.  The picture of Ware and his sister is an instance of a picture well developed when the chemical action extends to the margin of the plate.  D. Clark, New Brunswick, N. J., has four pictures of merit; and Van Schneidan a small collection of well-selected heads.  J. Brown has a collection of portraits of Commodore Perry and the officers of the squadron for the Japan Expedition, in half-size plates: the interest of this collection is much marred by the names of the officers not being attached underneath the plate; it is not too late to rectify this omission.  Haas has a whole-plate allegorical figure of a family man reading the paper at home—an excellent idea and well executed.  Besides this, he has a couple of other pictures, though on the whole his show is mediocre.  In the cases of Harrison & Hill there is displayed excellent artistic arrangement with very indifferent mechanical execution.  In the mammoth plates occupied by allegorical designs, the back-ground is wretchedly brought out—the plates were not properly cleaned, and are full of scratches; there are a few half and whole-sized pictures set in gaudy frames.

Webster, of Louisville, KY., has twenty-three pictures possessing clearness.  They have, however, been exposed a little too much in the camera; they lack warmth, but are otherwise well developed and exhibit good mechanical execution.  Alex Hesler has a collection of whole plates handsomely executed, possessing a nice arrangement of of the drapery, which has the effect of throwing the head out in good relief.  There is artistic arrangement in this collection, especially evinced in the picture “Driving a “Trade,” one of a series illustrating character and passion.  The panoramic view of Galena, Ill. Shows that city to advantage; and the three views of the Falls of St. Anthony possess great merit.  Mr. North, of Cleveland, O., has a case of pretty fail likenesses, perhaps exhibiting the lights too strongly.  Bisbee, of Dayton, O. exhibits a panoramic view of Cincinnati from Newport, upon six large plates.  This view is, without exception, the finest thing in the whole room; we might even go further, and say that it is the finest view by the Daguerreian process ever exhibited.  The mechanical execution is excellent, the perspective good, and the development unsurpassed.  The effect of the smoke over the southern part of the city is very finely given.  the distinctness of the letter signs, three-quarters of a mile distance and across the Ohio river, is well brought out.  The rest of the collection is fair, possessing no peculiar merit.  Williamson exhibits a poor collection.  Dobyn, Richardson & Co. have several whole size well-executed specimens, in which the mechanical part, the artistic arrangement and the chemical effect is good.  The “Cupid Reposing” is a very ungraceful picture of an ill-formed child, and the coloring is bad.  That of the Bateman Children, in character, is a good picture.  There are some exceedingly well executed heads in this collection.

Long, of St. Louis, has four frames of 180 heads of Wyman’s School, in that city, with the edifice and Principal; they possess no merit.  A likeness of Prof. Mitchell, Cincinnati, is well executed.  Some of the pictures in this collection are inverted with papier mache frames inlaid with mother of-pearl and tinsel.  As this style of frame appears in a few other collections we may as well here express dissent to the use of this material as being too gaudy and wholly unsuitable for daguerreotype plates. These latter are difficult to be viewed except in one light, and from the brightness of their surface, are much set off by deadened color on the frames, while the glare and iridescence of the papier mache add to the difficulty of discerning the picture; the use of such implies bad taste in the artist.  We felt this opinion growing upon us as we looked at them and found our view corroborated by a boarding school miss, who whisked alongside of us and caught by the colors, exclaimed, “Oh my! aint those “frames beautiful?”  Fitzgibbon has the richest exposition in the Fair—The most expensive frames with a large and passable collection.  The mammoth plate of Judge Colt is very good—That of Jenny Lind the best in the exhibition—those of McAllister, Julia Dean, Kate Hays, and Kossuth, are good pictures.  His collection of Indian Warriors, is a very fine one, which we understand is to be forwarded to the Ethnological Society of London, to have copies and busts made from them.  Masury & Silsbee, Boston exhibited twelve pretty and tasteful plates, with good arrangement and well finished.  The collections of Kilsey, Beals, and Howe do not require notice.  Whitehurst has a few good pictures in a large and passable collection; he has ten pictures illustrating the Falls of Niagara, which are very well executed.  Some of his large heads have their features out of all proportion.  Whipple of Boston, has a collection of photographic pictures, which he calls Crystallotypes, taken from Hyalotypes; there is a plate of the moon daguerreotyped, and one of the spots on the sun.  McDonnell & Co., Buffalo, have a very poor collection—so poor as not to deserve a place in the exhibition; the views of Niagara are fair.   Hawkins exhibits photographs on paper.  Drummond, eight plates of the order of Free masons in their lodge dress.  Fitzgibbon (already noticed) exhibits a very interesting case, which is a frame of electrotype copies from daguerreotype plates, very beautifully executed.  It should not be over looked upon as a mere curiosity to place a daguerreotype plate in a copper solution and take a copper cast from its surface by means of electricity: the copper cast looks much warmer in tone than the original.  It is to be regretted that Fitzgibbon did not complete this frame by the insertion of a third plate, by taking a second copy from the copper copy.  This would be in relief, like the original silver-plate, and is succeptible of being treated like an engraved plate; yielding, when inked, prints resembling mezzotint.  Besides the above collection of daguerreotypes, there is an assortment of cameras, lenses, stereoscopes and photographic paper, which are of interest to those practicing these beautiful arts.

Daguerreotype Portraits.—If any one wants a fac simile of his countenance, as accurately as nature can copy it, (or of a friend,) let him call at the room of Mr. Broadbent, opposite the Central Hotel.  Mr. Broadbent has been the pupil of Professor Morse, the President of the National Academy; and the execution of his work is more perfect, and the features and outlines of his miniatures more plainly and strikingly delineated, than we have ever before seen.

Daguerreotype Miniatures.  Mr. Broadbent is at present at the American Hotel, where he is prepared to take miniatures of such as may desire them, in a superior style.  We have seen several of Mr. Broadbent’s pictures, and do not hesitate to pronounce them superior to any we have yet seen.  Mr. B. has certainly brought the art to perfection.  Let those who doubt visit his rooms.

Mr. Broadbent’s Daguerreotype Likenesses.—It is only recently that we have paid much attention to the really excellent work of Mr. Broadbent, in this new art.  So repeated have been the failures of all similar attempts here, so imperfect have been the portraits which we have hitherto seen of this kind, that we have never held the method in proper estimations.  The likenesses of Mr. Broadbent are full of merit.  They are perhaps a little too true to be pleasing in some instances, but they are perfect.  The effect of light and shade and foreshortening, is precisely that which the most eminent artist known how to reach, while the peculiar contrast and gradation of colors cause them to present an appearance somewhat between a steel and mezzotint engraving.  Mr. B. has a method of precipitating gold upon the finished picture which prevents any change in it from lapse of time, whether from oxidation or otherwise.  Napoleon was but poorly gratified when Isabey told him that he could paint a picture which should last 400 years.  We can see no reason why these pictures should have any limit to their duration.  Chemically speaking there is a necessity of their continuous perfection.  Their price brings them within the reach of every one.  Mr. B.’s stay in Savannah will not be protracted much longer, as he has engagements elsewhere.  Those therefore, who desire to send cherished friends, true likenesses  of themselves, ought to make immediate application.

Broadbent’s Daguerreotype.  We had often seen notices of the superior excellence of Broadbent’s pictures, and have always heard him spoken of as excelling all others in the Daguerreotype—and we really think him deserving of all the praise that has been awarded him.  His pictures are more highly finished, and have a strength, brilliancy and beauty about them, that we have never seen in Daguerreotype pictures before. 

We have seen a few specimens of Miniature Paintings by Broadbent, which show him to be an artist of very superior skill, and probably his artistical skill may be one reason why he excels in the Daguerreotype.

Mr. B. intimates that he will leave in a few days, and we would advise all those who wish their portraits to call on him at once, as probably there may never occur an opportunity of getting portraits equal to Broadbent’s Daguerreotypes, which are infinitely superior as likenesses, and consequently more valuable, than any painted portrait in the world.

For The Times.  Daguerreotype.  Messrs. Editors:—Having recently visited the operating room of Mr. Broadbent, over Ives & Brothers Store in this city, who is now engaged in taking Miniature likenesses, I was astonished to see what perfection this beautiful art has attained.  Among his specimens I saw many familiar faces which I daily meet, and so natural are they, that were they Busts, instead of Pictures , nothing is wanting save the infusion of the breath of life, to make them real or second self.  Mr. B. being an Artist, (with the aid of the magic pencil, or some other secret charm,) imparts a coloring to his pictures which makes them vie with nature itself.  I understand that he will remain in the city but a few days longer; therefore all persons interested in obtaining a perfect resemblance of themselves, or friends, will improve the golden moment, and resort at once to his room, where almost in a twinkling he will indelibly stamp their features on something more lasting than paper, or durable than wood.

[For The Courier.]  Daguerreotype Portraits.  Those who desire to procure the most perfect likenesses by this beautiful and truly wonderful process, can now have an opportunity of doing so, by calling at the rooms of Mr. Broadbent, in King-street.  This gentleman has carried the practical operation of this science to a perfection which has not been attained by any other artist within our knowledge.  Whether it is the result of the quality of the materials used, or the superior skill of the artist, we cannot say, but the pictures of Mr. Broadbent surpasses any we have ever seen for distinctness and beauty.  They are brought out in such a manner as to resemble the finest engraving, without that unsatisfactory dimness and want of life which characterises most likenesses taken by this process.  For durability, also, they are fully equal to engravings.  Mr. B. now has in his possession portraits, several years old, that present as fresh an appearance as though they had just been retaken, If there are any who doubt what we have stated, we can only say to them call and judge for yourselves.  X. Colored Daguerreotype Portraits.  Mr. Perry[3], from New-York, having taken the rooms recently occupied by Mr. Broadbent, No. 271 King-street, proposes Taking Portraits By The Daguerreotype Process,—and he assures his patrons that his Pictures shall be superior, for beauty and finish, to any that can be produced at any other house in Charleston.

Mr. Perry for several years has had the charge of Mr. Plumb’s establishment in New-York, and produced the pictures for which Mr. Plumb obtained the first premium for the best pictures at the Fair of the American Institute in New-York the several successive years he was with him.  Mr. P. was also commissioned to visit the President’s house at Washington to take the portraits of his family—and also was engaged during the last session of Congress, taking the Portraits of Members of Congress, and other eminent persons.  It is well known the Daguerreotype reverses the picture, making the right appear the left side of the sitter.  Mr. P. has a mode of correcting this error by the use of a speculum which takes portraits or views without reversing them—which is not practiced by others in this city.

Mr. Perry is a practical optician, and manufactures the very best Daguerreotype instruments extant—and has for sale, Perry’s Premium Apparatus, also Plates, Cases, Chemicals, &c. &c.  Instructions given in the most approved process.

His likenesses combine great beauty of finish, and an unusual artistical effect—very unlike ordinary Daguerreotypes, and, beside the merit of fac simile likenesses, they are as strong as steel engravings, and have all the delicacy of color of the most exquisitely painted miniatures.  It must be a great gratification to the family and social circle to possess these beautiful representations of its members and of friends.  All who wish good portraits of themselves or friends would do well to give Mr. Broadbent a call.

Daguerreotype!  Removal.  S. Broadbent has removed to rooms over Messrs. Hart & Polley’s store where he has a Sky Light built expressly for the Daguerreotype.  There are several advantages of a sky light—the pictures are stronger, more effective, and of a more pleasing character than those done by side light; the objection of one side of the face being light and the other dark is obviated, and blue eyes can be as well taken as others.

Mr. Broadbent is an artist by profession, which gives him many advantages in the arrangement and finish of his pictures.  He has had, perhaps, mor experience in the Daguerreotype than any other person; having been successfully engaged in it ever since the art has been practiced, and his process is superior to that practiced by others, (either with machinery patented last October, or otherwise,) and he warrants better pictures than can be produced, done elsewhere.—or no charge.

Mr. B. has many advantages over ordinary operators—he has had as much, and probably more experience in the Daguerreotype, than any other person,–having been successfully engaged in it ever since the art has been practiced; and being an artist, he understands how to place the sitter in the most favorable light and position to make a good picture, and show best the likeness and character of the sitter—beside, his process is superior to that practiced by others.  Those who want the very best picture that can possibly be taken (and no one wants any other) will do well to give Mr. Broadbent a call at 211 Baltimore st.

Beautiful Daguerreotypes.—We have recently [examined] with much pleasure the very beautiful specimens of Daguerreotyping, executed by Messrs, Broadbent Cary, No. 128 Baltimore street.  These gentlemen, with a perfect knowledge of the art, have availed themselves of the latest improvements made in France and Germany, and now produce a perfect likeness, [which] by the aid of a little colouring, is made to bear [a close] resemblance to a finely executed miniature.—[those] who will take the trouble to examine their [speci ?] will at once acknowledge their great excellence.  [The] rooms of Messrs. Broadbent & Cary are neatly [prepared] for the reception of ladies and gentlemen, and [ ? ] great pains they take to afford entire satisfaction to [those] who favor them with their custom, commends [them] strongly to public patronage.

Likeness Of George Thompson.—We have seen, at various times three or four different pictures of this eminent man, but they were all failures—we had almost said caricatures.  Correct in outline, they yet lacked expression, and were powerless to convey a right impression of the man whose lineaments they professed to present.  But we have before us now a picture of another sort, and one that does something like justice to its subject.  It is an engraving by Illman & Sons, from a Daguerreotype by Broadbent & Co.; and those who have seen Mr. Thompson will, we think, agree with us that it is not only a striking likeness, but a beautiful work of art.  The engraver has been fortunate in catching the spirited and life-like expression so effectually traced by the sun, and in looking at the picture you might almost think that the man himself stood before you, and was about to give you an illustration of his oratorical powers.

Broadbent & Co., Chestnut St.—What specimens we saw, chiefly daguerreotypes, were in the first style of the art, with a few exceptions. Good daguerreotypes are not so much appreciated as formerly, as the attention of true artists is directed now particularly to Photography on paper and glass. As daguerreotyping has not yet reached its acme of perfection, I am very glad to see that there are some artists who are still striving for its improvement; although I acknowledge the superiority of paper and collodion photographs.

We Noticed also, among the photographic specimens some magnificent works by Broadbent.  Other cities may boast as much as they will of the advancement of the photographic art—Philadelphia still, as we think, bears away the palm.  Some of the works in the collection of Broadbent surpass any we have ever seen, either of home or foreign execution.  Those of them which are plain have high merits, while those that are colored are, if possible, even more attractive.

Franklin Institute.—The photographs of Mr. Broadbent, in the upper saloon of the Institute, are beautiful specimens.  Among them we noticed a likeness of John Grigg, Esq., which is brilliantly executed, presenting a most spirited fac simile of the features of that well known and highly respected gentleman.  The coloring of all the specimens in Mr. Broadbent’s collection is extremely life-like.  Indeed, the entire display he makes at the Fair is of the best possible character.

The Greatest Attraction at the present time, on Chestnut street, is Broadbent & Co.’s New Photographic Gallery, at Nos. 912 & 914.  This long established house has just opened he most beautiful and best appointed Rooms for the Photographic purpose to be found in the world.  Their entrance on Chestnut street, where are exhibited the most exquisite Ivorytypes, Wenderotypes and Cartes de Visite, is thronged  from morning till night.  By [increased] sky light arrangements, they are enabled to secure much greater promptness in attending to visitors.  Sky lights but a short flight of steps above the Reception Room.

Broadbent & Co.’s New Photographic Galleries.—The removal of Messrs Broadbent & Co.’s Photograph Galleries to Nos. 912 and 914 Chestnut street, is meeting the popular approval of the public.  This establishment is now the most popular art centre in our city, and hundreds visit it daily for the purpose of examining the magnificent specimens there exhibited, executed in all the various styles of the Photographic art.

Copartnership Notice.—Philadelphia, June 3, 1863.—The Firm of Broadbent & Co., Photographers is this day dissolved by the retirement of S. Broadbent.

The business will be continued by his late partners under the name Wenderoth & Taylor.  Mr. Wenderoth, the artist and the inventor of the Ivorytype and Wenderotype, who was associated with the late firm for four years, will continue at the head of the artists department, and Mr. Taylor, also a partner in the late firm, will remain, as heretofore, in charge of the business in the reception room.  S. Died.  Broadbent.—On Saturday evening.  July 24, 1880, Mr. Samuel Broadbent, in his seventieth year of age.

The funeral will take place from his late residence, on Wednesday, 28th inst., at 3 o’clock P. M.

Samuel Broadbent is still a work in progress, Philadelphia newspapers have not been thoroughly checked.

Deceased.  Samuel Broadbent, of Broadbent Taylor, photographers, Chestnut street, Philadelphia died at his residence in that city , on Saturday in the 70th year of his age. 

Mr. Broadbent formerly lived in this city, and had a gallery in the building at Third and Market streets, belonging to Mr. Phillip Plunket.  Mr. Elwood Garret, the skillful photographer of this city learned the photographic art with Mr. Broadbent while in this city.  Mr. Broadbent was one of the best artist in Philadelphia, and a gentlemen of refinement, pleasant and reliable.  He was very active for his age and continued to be at his business until within a few weeks of his death. He had a wide circle of friends and his death will be sincereely (sic.) regretted

The first mention of Alfred Boisseau practicing photography was on April 15 1854 while in Cleveland, Ohio, in addition to portrait and landscape painting. He also practiced photography while in Montreal Canada, in addition to portrait and landscape painting, he is also known for his painting of Indigenous peoples.

Boisseau, Alfred (1823-?)  Portrait and genre painter, drawing and painting teacher, and art dealer.  Boisseau was born in 1823 in Paris and exhibited at the Salon in 1842.  He was in New Orleans in 1845 and 1846, and in NYC in 1849 and 1852 , when he exhibited at the National Academy and American Art-Union, respectively.  He apparently moved to Cleveland (Ohio) late 1852, advertising there in December 1852 and January 1853 as a portrait and landscape painter, teacher of drawing and painting, and art dealer.  He was in Cleveland as late as 1859.

Alfred Boisseau, a pupil of Delaroche, and a painter of great merit, has just opened a gallery of portraits and other paintings, at No. 396 Broadway, corner of Walker street.  Mr. Boisseau is one of those men of talent whom the waves of the agitated ocean of European politics have just cast upon our shores, where we hope he will find an hospitable asylum.  Some of his pictures have been exhibited with great success at the Louvre, among others a scene of Creole Life, which is now in his gallery.  We counsel our connoisseurs to look at Mr. Boisseau’s collection.

Instruction in Painting.—We refer our readers to the advertisement of Mr. Boisseau, who offers to give instructions in the art of drawing and painting in oil colors.  Mr. Boisseau is himself an artist of high merit, whose works have already won for his a reputation in the land of his birth.  The French painters are well grounded in the elements and principals of their art, and expert in the habit of reducing them to exact practice.  This qualifies them for the through instruction of pupils.

National Academy of Design…

161.  Scenery of Creole Life.  A. Boisseau.—A picture singularly brilliant in colouring, reminding us in its exaggerated tone of the effect of coloured crayons.  A handsome Creole, an infant, and a negress are painted in dolce far niente attitudes.  We cannot praise the drawing, and were the lady’s lower limbs are bestowed it would be difficult to comprehend.  The form, size, style, and gay colouring will attract notice, and perhaps find admirers.  The picture is circular, and very handsomely framed; but from the peculiarity in the arrangement of the figures it somewhat reminds us of a target, with the bull’s eye distinctly marked.  Attentive observers will see what we mean.

Boisseau’s New Daguerrean Room, 111 Superior Street, Williams Block, Opposite Forest City House, Cleveland, O.  Mr. A. Boisseau having secured the services of Mt. T. Magher, one of the best operators of the city of New York, now opens a new Room for Daguerreotyping, in common with his Painting room.  The Room is nicely fitted up, and being constantly supplied with a fine collection of Oil Paintings, will be quite a rendezvous for the friends of the fine arts.  Mr. B. has put to profit his long experience in Portrait Painting to procure the kind of light just calculated to produce the handsomest Pictures; and intending to follow Daguerreotyping as an Art, he has spared neither time nor money to gather up the best instruments and materials necessary to practice successfully.

Me B. is prepared as before to execute Portraits in Oil, Landscapes and Fancy Paintings, and would inform his pupils in Drawing and Painting, that the Daguerreotyping business will not interfere with their Lessons,, as he will continue to devote to them part of his time.

Boisseau’s portrait of Mr. Williams is excellent; his landscapes are indifferent in both subject and execution.

Ryder’s Photographs form a gallery of beauties, and cannot be surpassed for faithfulness and skill in coloring.

North Exhibits some very excellent photographs among the best of which are those of Mr. A. P. Winslow, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens.

Pen Jottings Taken On The Fair Ground Yesterday…Fine Arts Hall.  This has been fitted up under the supervision of Mr. Allen Smith, Jr. in the fine taste which characterizes this well known artist, although every thing was not quite arranged.  We think we hazard nothing in saying that a more charming display of artistical good things, has not graced any previous fair.  The oil paintings both on canvas and photographic, were highly creditable to the artists Mr. Smith had his usual variety of finely colored heads, lifelike and beautiful.  Nothing which we could say would add many thing to his well established fame.  The death of the stag from Landseer will bear looking at more than once.  Mr. Ryder exhibits some very fine photographs also colored by Mr. Alonzo Pease which were much admired.  The two finest pictures in the room and those which attracted the most attention were two heads of Fremont, one a photograph by North, colored in oil by Smith, and one by Ryder, colored also in oil by Pease.  (We noticed as singular that although there were some 6 or 7 pictures of Fremont there was none of Buchanan!)  Boisseau also exhibited a number of oil colored Photographs which are much admired.  Daguerreotypes, Photographs, Ambrotypes, etc. were there from North, Ryder, Boisseau, of Cleveland, Bisbee of Columbus, and G. W. Collins of Urbana, Ohio, Spherotypes from Stimpson, also of Cleveland.

Fine Arts Fair…Photographs And Ambrotypes.  North, of Cleveland, stands without rival in this department of art.  Some of his ambrotypes, are most exquisitely executed.  Ryder, Boisseau, Bisbee, Mrs. Short, and Stimpson, were without merit; some were superior.  Some of these pictures had a peculiar appearance, standing out, as it were, from the glass.

Photographs In Oil, (Life Size.) In this department, there were several competitors.  Among these, North, Pease, Ryder, Boisseau, and Smith, stand prominent.  The rivalship in coloring these photographs in oil, stands chiefly between Smith, Pease, and Boisseau, each of whom has a peculiar style.  The general expression seemed to be in favor of those by Smith, though many preferred those by Pease—others, those by Boisseau.

William Willard was recorded in two announcements in the Evening Star (Washington, D. C. and one entry from The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary Of Artist In America 1564-1860.  The first announcement appeared on December 18, 1855.  Henry Willard, a Boston artist of great merit, has taken a studio in the same building with Whitehurst’s Daguerreotype establishment, where he is painting the portraits of several of our distinguished men.

The second announcement appeared on December 22.  Fine Arts.—Visiting several studios this morning, we found the artists busy at their easels, apparently well content with the patronage they are receiving from an appreciating public…  Henry Willard, in the building with Vannerson, was at work on a portrait, in oils, of the Hon. Mr. De Witt, of Mass….

The entry appeared in The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary Of Artist In America 1564-1860.  Willard, William (1819-1904)  Portrait painter; born March 24, 1819 at Sturbridge (Mass.)  died there November 1, 1904.  He was active in Boston during the 1850’s and exhibited at the Athenaeum Gallery.  The American Antiquarian Society owns his self-portrait and his portraits of Charles Sumner, Daniel Webster, and George Frisbie Hoar.  He also painted a panorama of Boston from Bunker Hill.  Weis Checklist of Portraits; Boston CD 1851-60; Swan, BA; Boston Evening Transcript, May 2, 1849 (courtesy of J. Earl Arrington).

William Willard is recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry.  It is unknown if He was Associated with Southworth and Hawes or if he had a artist studio in the same building.

Peter Kohlbeck was recorded in one announcement and one entry in The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary Of Artist In America 1564-1860.  The announcementappeared on November 4, 1856 in the New York Tribune (New York, New York).  Fire In The Bowery.  Yesterday morning about 4 o’clock a fire broke out in the rear part of the second story of building No. 229 Bowery, known as the German American Hall, and before the fireman could subdue the flames the upper stories with most of their contents were destroyed.  The Fire extended to a carpenter shop in the rear, occupied by James M. Duff.  The basement of the front building was occupied by Otto Strum as a large beer saloon; first and second floors by Ernst Hanbold as a large-beer saloon and concert room; third floor by Peter Kohlbeck, daguerreotypist.  Loss of Mr. Duff, $[100]; no insurance.  Loss of Mr. Hanbold, $2,000; insured for $2,000 in the Pacific Insurance Company.  Loss of Mr. Kohlbeck, $400; insured for $1,000 in the Rutgers Insurance Company…  The fire is supposed to have been the work of design, as a man was seen to come out of the building and lock the door shortly before the fire was discovered.  The matter will be investigated by the Fire Marshal.

The entry appeared in The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary Of Artist In America 1564-1860.  Kohlbeck, Peter.  Portrait painter on NYC.  He was painting portraits in the latter half of the 1850’s, then turned to taking ambrotypes and photographs.  he was active until 1878.   nybd 1856-61; NYCD 1860-78.

Samuel Raymond Fanshaw was recorded in eight advertisements and two announcements, in the New York Herald and New York Tribune.  He was an miniature painter & artist according to the New York City Directory, and a miniature & portrait painter according to an entry in The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860. The advertisements and announcements show him in the partnerships of Fanshaw, Young & Cunningham; Fanshaw & Hite and Hite, Langenheim & Fanshaw.  The city directories only list him as an artist and not in a partnership.

The first advertisement ran every other day from May 25 to 29, and every day from June 4 to 6, 1843 in The New York Herald.  Miniature Portraits copied from Daguerreotypes in natural colors on ivory, with perfect accuracy, or with any desired alteration or improvement on very moderate terms.  Specimens to be seen in the Daguerreotype Room, No. 1, at 235 Broadway, near park place.

The first announcement appeared on September 19,1843 in the New York Daily Tribune.  Fair at the American Museum.—The problem of opening a new and spacious Saloon at the American Museum, as a Perpetual Fair or Bazaar for the Exhibition and Sale of Goods, Wares, Merchandize, &c has proved highly successful.  It is now one of the most attractive Halls in the Establishment, and is undoubtedly the cheapest Advertising Medium in the world.  The name, location and business of all depositors are advertised in 100,000 small bills per annum—also in the principal city papers.  The following persons have already made deposits in this Fair, and as nearly all the articles are For Sale, Merchants and others will find it to their interest to make their purchases through this medium.  It is obvious that no articles but those of the best quality are deposited here.  Persons desirous of depositing specimens of Goods or Cards of Business in the perpetual Fair, can do so on reasonable terms.  Circulars of prices, & c. can be obtained at the Office of the Museum.

The second announcement appeared on June 18, 1850 in the New York Herald.  Fine Arts.—Samuel R. Fanshaw & George H. Hite, miniature and portrait painters, have associated with W. & F. Langenheim, the celebrated Daguerreotype and Talbotype artist of Philadelphia, and purchased the splendid National Miniature Gallery, established by Edwards, Anthony & Clark, 247 Broadway, corner Murray street, where they will superintend the sittings for Daguerreotypes.  Their Talbotype miniatures and portraits, which are taken upon ivory, ivory-paper, etc., may be seen in the above gallery.  There is but one prevailing opinion, that they possess all the truthfulness of a good Daguerreotype, with all the artistic merit that has characterized the former highly finished miniatures of those artists.  For further evidence; please call and see them.

Samuel R. Fanshaw is recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry, but is misidentified as Thomas Fanshaw.  From 1851 to 1857 the 363 Address is the same as Samuel Root’s it is possible that Fanshaw is working for Root.  At this time it is only speculation about the connection.

John Wood Dodge, miniature portrait painter, daguerreotypist & farmer.  In the partnership of Dodge & Wenderoth and J. W. & E. S. Dodge was recorded in one announcement in The Daily Nashville True Whig and in eleven announcements and two advertisements in the Nashville Union and American.  The announcement in The Daily Nashville True Whig (Nashville, Tennessee) appeared on September 29, 1855.  Photographic Miniature Portraits.—Art has achieved a signal triumph in the Introduction of crystalotype likenesses.  In the hands of competent artists, Photography is destined to supersede miniature painting on ivory altogether.  The process is simple and sure.  The likeness is first daguerreotyped on glass, and then transferred to a very fine paper, prepared especially for the purpose.  They are then colored to the life.  The likenesses thus taken has all the accuracy of a daguerreotype, and all the beauty and finish of a painting.  They are much larger than the ordinary miniature, and can be furnished at about one-fourth the cost of the latter.  We noticed that our old friend, J. W. Dodge, formerly of this city, and whose skill as a miniature painter is well known here, has been for some taking likenesses upon this plan.  He is associated with Mr. Augustus Wenderoth, one of the finest artist in the Country.  We have before us a highly complimentary notice of their pictures from the St. Louis Republican.

We are pleased to learn that Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth will be in this city early October, and will open rooms for a short stay.—With the high reputation which Mr. D. enjoys here, and the acknowledge talent of his associate, there can be no doubt that they will find a lucrative patronage ready for them.

The first announcement in the Nashville Union and American (Nashville, Tennessee) appeared on December 23, 1855.  The Fine Arts—Photographic Miniature Portraits.—We take pleasure in calling the attention of our readers to the card of Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth in this morning’s paper.  Mr. Dodge is well known in this community as an artist who has no superior in this country in his peculiar department—miniatures on Ivory.  Hundreds of his pictures are in the possession of persons in Nashville alone—and whoever has the likeness of a valued friend from his pencil has a “thing of beauty” which will certainly be “a joy forever.”  Mr. D. has associated with him Mr. Wenderoth, an artist of the highest accomplishment, as an examination of some of his specimens will abundantly satisfy anyone.  Together they will not only furnish our citizens with those inimitable miniatures on ivory—celebrated wherever known—but what will prove, we believe, even more acceptable, are to furnish Photographic Miniature Portraits—a style of picture which is destined to a very great extent to supersede all others.  They present at once the faithfulness and accuracy of the daguerreotype, together with the beauty, finish, naturalness and ease of an oil painting—which they in reality are, more than any thing else.  The photographic process transfers to paper the form and feature with unmistakable accuracy in the minutest particulars, while the delicate touch of the artist’s pencil—a pencil already famous even without this aid—brings out in bold and striking relief a counterfeit presentment of the subject, perfect almost beyond credulity.—This photographic process enables the artist to enlarge the size of their pictures, and to prepare them with less labor, as well as more accuracy, and consequently at a reduced cost.  We advise those of our readers who are fond of the beautiful in art, after giving the card of Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth a reading, to call and examine some of their specimens, of which they have a few.  We can guarantee to the most matter-of-fact individual that he will find something in them to excite emotions of pleasure, and that he will at once resolve to have himself or some friend “done up” in their inimitable style.

The first advertisement ran from December 23, 1855 to March 26, 1856.  To The Public.  A Card.  The undersigned would respectfully announce to his friends and the citizens of Nashville and vicinity, that he has returned to the city for the purpose of pursuing his profession, and that he has associated with him the talented Artist, Mr. F. Augustus Wenderoth, and he feels assured, from their success in another State, that their efforts in their profession cannot fail to be received with favor by the lovers of Art in Tennessee.  Nashville, Dec. 23d, 1855.  John W. The Fine Arts—Photographic Miniature Portraits.  Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth would make known to the citizens generally, that they have taken Rooms over “Hicks’ China Hall,” North side of the Public Square, and are now prepared to execute (in addition to Miniatures on Ivory) the new Photographic Miniature Portraits.  These pictures are from Locket to Cabinet size, forming handsome ornaments for the Palor.  They possess the faithfulness of the mirror with the expression and coloring of life, and are Perfectly Permanent.

Painted Photographic copies of various sizes, taken of Daguerreotypes, when accompanied with a description of the complexion, color of the eyes, hair, dress, &c.  Specimens of the different styles, painted and plain, can be examine at their Studio.  dec.28.

The second announcement appeared on February 15, 1856.  Photographs Of The Legislature.—Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth, the distinguished artists, will take a Photographic view of the interior of the House of Representatives, with the members (and we presume their lady friends in the gallery,) this morning at 10 o’clock, if the day proves a favorable one.  If the day should be unfavorable, the picture will be taken on the first bright day following, at the same hour.  The interior of the Senate chamber will be taken on the day after that of the House, at the same hour, if the weather is fair.

The third announcement appeared on February 16, 1856.  Interior View Of The Hall.  Mr. Parks submitted a resolution which had just been put into his hands, inviting Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth, Photographic Artists, (conformably to their application,) to take a Photographic Miniature of the House of Representatives at any time it may suit their convenience, and requesting the Door-keepers to extend to them the necessary freedom of the Hall and facilities for that object: and he moved that the rule be suspended for its consideration.

And, accordingly, the rule was suspended, and the resolution was adopted….The Speaker read to the House a communication from Dodge, the Photographic Artists, stating that he would be prepared to take his interior view of the Hall to morrow (Friday) morning at 10 o’clock, if it should be a fair day; and, if not, on the first fair day following, at the same hour….

The fourth announcement appeared on May 16, 1856.  Photographic Miniature Portraits.  The studio of our friends, Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth, over Hicks’ China Hall, north side of the square, has become the very general resort of that large class of our citizens of both sexes so justly celebrated for their high appreciation and liberal patronage of every thing truly excellent in the fine arts.  The reputation of Nr, Dodge alone as a miniature painter on ivory, in this city, where he has been so long and so favorably known, is of itself sufficient to attract all connoisseurs.  But there are other no less important features connected with his studio.  The introduction of the new style of pictures, known as Photographic Miniature Portraits, proves a most successful card.  These pictures, when painted, possess all the beauty of the ivory miniature, and, in addition, all the accurateness of outline and feature of the daguerreotype.  Besides they have the advantage in point of size, and are less expense in proportion.  Mr. Wenderoth is himself one of the most accomplished miniature painters in the country, as the specimens of his workmanship abundantly prove.  In the art of Photographing he is entirely au fait, and with his superior apparatus can exhibit pictures equal, if not superior, to any ever taken in this or any other country.

Mr. Dodge has recently returned from a visit to his family in the mountains, and is prepared, in connection with Mr. W., to attend to all orders.  Photographic Miniature Portraits can be readily taken from Daguerreotypes or Portraits.  We recommend those who wish to see something really superior to visit the studio of Dodge & Wenderoth.

The fifth announcement appeared on August 2, 1856.  Bank of Tennessee—Counter Notice.—We saw yesterday some specimens, of a new issue of the Bank of Tennessee, of the denomination of ten dollars, issued in lieu of their red brick tens, which have been withdrawn.  These notes are payable at the counter of the Bank here, and are being put in circulation in this city.  As specimens of Bank note engraving, they are equal, if not superior to any thing we have ever seen.  The face of the bill in on a yellow ground, and presents fine miniatures of Jackson, Polk, and Hon. Cave Johnson, President—the first two taken from J. W. Dodge’s Ivory Miniatures, and the latter from a Photographic Miniature by Dodge & Wenderoth….

The seventh announcement appeared on October 22, 1856.  Sale of Fine Fruit.—Mr. Dodge premium apples will be sold at auction, at Odd Fellows’ Hall to-night at 8 o’clock.  Those, therefore, who desire a dish of that delicious fruit, will, of course, attend.

The eighth announcement appeared on November 15, 1856.  Cumberland Mountain—Fine Fruit And Vegetables. 

The extraordinary agricultural resources of the extensive table land of the Cumberland mountains are attracting considerable attention of late…

We are led to these remarks by the very gratifying circumstance of receiving from the hands of our clever artist friend, J. W. Dodge, Esq., a basket of those magnificent apples from his orchard on Cumberland mountain, in Cumberland county.  A case of these apples was exhibited at the late State Agricultural Fair in this city, and attracted universal attention.  We heard gentlemen who had attended Fairs in the oldest States in the Union, where there were contributions from the best fruit growing regions, say that they had never seen anything to compare with these apples.  At the conclusion of the Fair, Mr. Dodge sold his apples at auction, and some of the finest specimens brought as high as ten dollars and forty cents per dozen!—the best sale of apples on record.  As to the quality of this fruit, we assert, unhesitatingly, that it is superior to any we ever tasted.  Mr. Dodge has on his mountain farm some twenty or thirty of the best varieties, all thriving in the most remarkable degree….

In addition to the apples we are under obligations to Mr. Dodge for a specimen of the Irish Potatoes grown on the mountain.  They are of the red meshannock variety, and as fine specimens of Irish potato as we have ever saw. …

Mr. Dodge has several barrels of these apples for sale, and those wishing to enjoy something particularly luxurious in the way of fruit, will be accommodated by calling at his studio, over Hicks’s China store….Mr. D. has been for twenty years more or less on the mountain, and is familiar with its beauties, resources and attractions generally, and next to painting a good picture, delights in expatiating upon them.

The ninth announcement appeared on December 28, 1856.  Cumberland Mountain Land at Auction.  Valuable Stock Farm. 

I will offer at public sale, on Saturday, the 19tgh day of January, a beautiful and valuable tract of land, lying on the table of the Cumberland Mountain, in Cumberland county, about 26 miles East of Sparta, on the road to Knoxville.  This Land is a part of the tract upon which I reside and immediately adjoining my celebrated Fruit Orchard.—It contains about 1200 acres…A plat of the land can be seen at my Painting Rooms, over Hicks’s China Hall on the Square…

The second advertisement ran from April 14 to May 9, 1857.  A Card Having sold my Photographic rooms, apparatus, materials, &c., to Messrs. Hughes Brothers of this city, with a view to reside permanently at my home in Cumberland County, I take great pleasure in recommending them as my successors.  They are gentlemen of skill and experience in their profession, and I trust they may receive that full and liberal share of business which has ever flowed upon me.

The Messrs. Hughes have engaged a corps of artists of superior abilities, and I have no hesitation in saying that they are fully qualified, in their several departments, to give perfect satisfaction to all who may desire the finest Photographs, either plain or elaborately painted.  J. W. Dodge.

John Wood Dodge is not recorded in other photographic directories.  Pioneer Photographers from the Mississippi to the Continental Divide A Biographical Dictionary 1839-1865, does record him as a dioramist and miniaturist active in New York City 1830-44; New Orleans 1848-1849; and Huntsville, Ala in 1854.  Current research suggest that while in St. Louis in (1854-1855) he colored photographs for Enoch Long.  Illegible advertisement in the Daily Missouri Republican dated May 30, 1855.
