Review of the Manufacturers of Chicago for 1855.  In presenting our readers with the fourth Annual Review of the Manufactures of Chicago, we are happy to say , that this important arm of our prosperity continues to keep pace with the general growth of the city and country…

Daguerreotypes, Photographs, Ambrotypes, &c.  The Daguerrean business is not strickly speaking a manufacturing branch of industry, yet as there is in this city a large amount of capital invested in establishments of this kind, we have thought it  but proper to include them.  During the past two years Daguerrean rooms have increased very rapidly; and we are happy to record the fact, that Chicago has some of the best operators in the United States.

A. Hesler, Daguerrean and Photographer, Metropolitan Block, Lasalle street.

This is the largest Daguerrean establishment in the United States.  It consists of 12 large rooms, most appropriately fitted up.  The show rooms are luxuriously furnished.

Mr. Hesler’s Daguerreotype likenesses have taken the premium at the World’s Fair, New York, and at several of the State Fairs throughout the United States.  He was formerly situated at Galena, in this State, and moved to this city in December, 1854.

The following is a statement of his business during 1855.

This establishment was only commenced las September, since which time they have acquired a good reputation as Daguerreans.  Some of their pictures have taken premiums at State Fairs and Industrial exhibitions.

Art Matters…Pictures and paintings are more talked of among us than ever before…

Hesler’s gallery contains some new gems in daguerreotypes and photographs.  The crayon photographs on white paper are still “the rage” here.  Mr. Marck, the artist in oil colors at Hesler’s has completed two photograph portraits of the late Edwin Shermanwhich will be exhibited next week and attract the attention of the numerous friends of the deceased.  They were photographed from daguerreotypes.

At Fassett’s, some of the most perfect groups have been taken during the last week.  In a short time Mt. Root of Philadelphia, Mr. Fassett’s partner, will be here to take photographs.  Some of his specimens are already shown in the gallery.  In some of them the effect is wonderfully heightened by deepening the darker portions by skilfully touching them with India ink.  Some of these are valued as high as fifty dollars each.

Art Matters…From Hesler’s the artists are never gone.  He is always there, a whole host in himself, and others are ever and anon coming to work with him.  The pictures colored by Winters the last week have been better than his “specimens,” and are greatly admired.  Marck has just finished a life size photograph on oil colors, of a child of a citizen of Kenosha, which is the best thing at Hesler’s this week.  He is improving his pictures by lending a warmer tone of color.  Hesler has commenced something which promises to be very fine; a photograph panoramic view of Chicago; it will be taken from the top of the new grain elevator at the Illinois Central depot, which is on the lake shore and 105 feet high.  The view is complete from this stand point and if the work when finished equals our expectations, we shall have ,more to say of it hereafter.

Fassett’s Gallery has been rather surrendered to the carpenters, the painters and the upholsterers the past week, and will be found vastly improved in consequence, while several new and beautiful daguerreotypes show what is constantly being done by the artists there.

Improvements In Ambrotyping.—Ambrotyping is a branch of the fine arts, which has attracted the attention of daguerreans and others all over the United States.  It consists in taking the picture on glass by a chemical preparation, instead of on a plate, as in Daguerreotypes, and as a general thing the expressions have been much clearer than in the latter.  One difficulty however has always presented itself to operators—the pictures have been cold and dead-like, while it has been almost impossible to color them successfully.  From two pictures which we had the pleasure of examining yesterday, however, in the store windows of D. B. Cooke & Co. and S. C. Griggs & Co., taken by S. M. Fassett, 133 Lake street. we are inclined to believe that perfection has been nearly approached in this branch.  In those portraits the folds of the dresses are most naturally portrayed—each overlying the other, while the colors are faithfully and skillfully represented.  There is besides in them a warmness of expression—every lineament and feature as if glowing with life—which is very beautiful.  Altogether they are well worthy the inspection of the public.

The Fair Of The American Institute.—We paid a short visit yesterday to the buildings for the Fair of the American Institute at the corner supposed to be spacious enough when planned, of Clark and Adams street.  The buildings were but they are now enlarging them, although the space already enclosed is nearly twice as large as South Market Hall.

The great mass of artistes yesterday were in too much confusion to admit of a fair examination, but it is evident that the display will be very attractive and varied.  Just as the daylight was dying away, we caught a glimpse of Fassett & Root’s collection of pictures as they were being hung.  They are to occupy the centre of the space devoted to pictures, directly under a stained glass window; they will be the chief attraction at that end of the hall, for they are the finest specimens of plain and colored photographs we have ever seen, for distinctness, force, naturalness and beauty of finish.  They show that Messrs Fassett & Root have secured the services of the best artists in the country.  The photographs of John C. Fremont and other citizens finished in India ink, have a strength of expression that cannot be excelled, while the photographs and ambrotypes of ladies, colored to the life with all their accessories of dress and surroundings, are miracles of beauty.

A Master-Stroke—Yesterday we had the pleasure of inspecting one of the finest specimens of photography we have ever seen.  It was a picture (large size) of our well known friend “Tom Church.”  There was “Tom,” just as natural and life-like as we have seem him for the past dozen years—every feature and twitch of his countenance as familiar to us as if he was standing by our side with the “roll book” under his arm.

The artist who deserves the credit of the picture is Mr. Fassett, of the firm of Fassett & Cook, 131 Lake street.  The photograph is colored with India ink, and is finished in a style and on a principle entirely his own.  Our readers will probably recollect that Mr. Fassett took the first premium at the Mechanics Fair, which was held recently in this city.  Chicago has much reason, indeed, to be proud of her artists.

Those desirous of a living and a lasting likeness could not do better than visit Mr. Fassett’s gallery.  His pictures are all good; but his photographs have a beauty of finish that cannot fail to be specially attractive to the public.

Beautiful Photographs.—Yesterday we had the pleasure of examining in the rooms of Mr. Fassett, on lake street, several beautiful Photographs (cabinet size) of some well known faces, among whom may be mentioned Harry Johnson and Mr. Bates, of this city, and W. W. Chandler, now of Cleveland.  As specimens of the art, they are perhaps the most perfect we have ever seen, being at the same time most faithful likenesses and handsome pictures.  Mr. Fassett’s process of finishing photographs is entirely new, and, we may add, highly successful, as any one may judge, by the beautiful pictures which he sends forth to the world.

There is one significant feature in the above photographs which places them above those generally produced by artists.  It is this: they have a smoothness of appearance, which is seldom exhibited in photographs, and which has sometimes rendered them so objectionable.

A train on the Chicago & Milwaukee R….Not least the matters of interest, was the Photographic Gallery, of Mr. Fassett.  His collection is numerous, and the specimens which compose it, in the highest attainment of the art.  Brady’s Galleries in New York and Washington, are the only ones we have visited which compare in tone and finish with his pictures.  They are taken of the ordinary sizes, and “thrown up” to any desired size even to full life, and colored to nature, giving them all the freshness, vigor of tone, and fidelity of the living subject.  The coloring is executed by Mrs. F.  We bid adieu to Chicago with a feeling of deference and respect, such as takes possession of us in the contemplation of triumphant development and greatness.

Art Matters.—Messrs. Fassett & Cook, Daguerrean and Photographists, will open on the first of May, their new rooms in Larmon’s Block, Nos. 122 and 124 Clark street, West Side, where all the lovers of art will delight to linger.  Mr. Fassett will leave for New York this week, to procure the most elegant furniture and adornments that can be found to fit up his rooms in the most superb style.  They have been arranged to order for Mr. Fassett, and nothing will be wanting to make them one of the most attractive resorts in the city.  The reputation of Messrs. Fassett & Cook, as artists of the highest character, is too well established to need commendation at our hands.  Specimens of their superior taste and artistic skill adorn the homes of hundreds of our citizens.

Their present rooms on Lake street, will be continued as usual.  Due notice will be given when their new hall will be opened on Clark street.  Their friends will wait impatiently the announcement of their first announcement.

The “Orchestrian.”—We made an incidental allusion yesterday to this wonderful musical instrument which will be on exhibition to-day and this evening at the rooms of Messrs. Fassett & Cook, 122 and 124 Clark street.  It is an automatic orchestra, or orchestral organ, built by Schaepperle at Neustadt, Germany, at a cost of &6,000.  There are only four of these instruments in the United States of which this is the largest and most perfect.  It is capable of rendering between one and two hundred of the finest pieces of classical music, in full orchestra melody.

By the way, we may in this connection remind our readers that they may hear this instrument at the formal opening of the rooms of Messrs. F. & C., any time up to 10 o’clock this evening.

Grand Opening.—On Saturday morning, in company with other members of the press and gentlemen of this city, we attended the opening of Messre, Fassett & Cook’s new Daguerrean Gallery, and although this is a mere business enterprise on the part of energetic men, we cannot let the occasion pass without referring to it as a matter of public interest.  For here are palatial apartments devoted to the Photographic art, which like the Ambrotype and Daguerreotype, should be dear to every American, seeing that it is essentially our peculiar field of art, and when reception halls and operating rooms can be fitted up like these of Messrs. F. & C., it shows the progress of that pursuit; particularly when we compare it with our first daguerreotype taken in a smoky garret of foul odor, or in a villainous car similar to that which Mrs. Jarley devoted to her wax-work exhibition, and Van Amburg to his beasts of prey, we at once see without reference even to the works of the artist themselves, what material progress has been made.

But the pictures are gems of art work, and altho’ for a long time we could not associate the efforts of Mr. Daguerre, or Talbot with the title of artist, we certainly must say, now, that to take a picture such as we saw adorning—not singly, but in numbers,—the walls of the new rooms, 122 and 124 South Clark street, it demands a high appreciation of the beautiful in art, that delicate execution, which are the real results of a mind education in the artistic steed.

It was the pictures executed by Mr. Fassett and repainted and retouched by his lady, that so recently astonished the editors of the N. Y. Tribune, and which they pronounced without Metropolitan prejudice, equal, if not superior to anything ever turned out by Gurney, Brady, or Fredericks.  Mrs. F. is the artist of the concern, who does the coloring and touching, and her flesh tint coloring and drapery painting would have won the admiration of a Reynolds or an Eddy.  She is indeed an artist, in the fullest sense of the term.

At the reception yesterday, we saw many of the elite of our city.  The rooms, the music, (by that wonderful instrument—the orchestrian) and the artistic adornments, delighted every one.  In the operating room we noticed that splendid window, which has been built with the building expressly for its purpose, it gives a Northern light of great power, but the intensity which sitters feel in other rooms, is neutralized by the admirable tinting of the walls and the light blue of the painting.  It is far from painful to sit in this light, and have one’s features “typified.”  The proprietors intend to give daily Free Matiness, and we assure our friends, both male and female, that an hour may be well spent in this way, listening to the orchestrian, and examining the specimens which adorn the walls of this splendid gallery of art.

On Thursday evening last the reception of Messrs. Fassett & Cook took place at the daguerrean palace, 126 Clark street.  The rooms were crowded with our best citizens, who expressed themselves pleased with what they saw and heard from the Orchestrian.  They are to have another of these delightful reunions this afternoon from 1 to 6 o’clock.

An Hour Among The Pictures.—One of the most delightful halls to visit in the city is Fassett & Cook’s Art Gallery on Clark street, in the marble block south of the Court House square.  The exquisite taste with which Mr. Fassett’s pictures are finished command the warmest admiration of all who see them.  Mr. Olcott, the correspondent of the New York Tribune, in his letter to the journal spoke of Mr. Fassett’s pictures in the following complimentary manner: 

In the Fine Arts Hall, the windows in the roof are whitewashed to tomne down the light to suit the pictures  and objects displayed.  Messrs. Fassett & Cook of Chicago show some of the finest specimens of colored photography I ever saw.  In particular, a family group of five figures should be noticed.  The artist is a lady, the wife of Mr. Fassett, and a former pupil of Wandesford, the water colorist.  The same parties exhibit a colored likeness of Col. Capron, the Superintendent of the show, and other fine specimens.  None of the exhibitors show the beautiful coloring of Mrs. Fassett’s pictures, which are really pretty enough to grace the walls of our Academy of Design.

The family group here spoken of is a picture of D. B. Cooke, Esq., and his family, and well does it deserve the compliment it received from Mr. Olcott.  It can be seen in the gallery of Mr. Fassett.  There are many other elegant pictures there which will well repay half an hour’s study.

To Be Closed For The Winter.—Our citizens will learn with regret that Fassett & Cook’s Art Gallery on Clark street, will be closed for the winter after the first of December.  Mr. Fassett has made arrangements to spend the winter at Savannah, Georgia.  We need scarcely speak of the splendid daguerreotypes, and the elegant photographs, for which this establishment has become so justly distinguished.  For delicacy and beauty of coloring, for accuracy and life-like resemblance, the pictures of Mr. Fassett have, in our humble judgement, no superior.  Many of our citizens will remember the exquisite picture of our fellow citizen, D. B. Cooke, Esq., which was on exhibition at the U. S. Fair.  Doubtless many of our citizens then determined to have a family picture, but have since been deferring the matter from week to week.  We hope that such and all others who wish to have photographs of themselves and friends will call immediately.  Only four weeks remain before Mr. Fassett’s rooms will be closed, and let each one who wants a picture call the first pleasant day.  We have no doubt that Mr. Fassett and his accomplished lady, to whose pencil he is indebted for much of his success, will have a most successful wither at Savannah.  Their eminent ability as artist justly entitles them to it.

Samuel M. Fassett vs George S. Cook. In Chancery.

Affidavit of the non-residence of George S. Cook, defendant above named, having been filed in the office of the clerk of said Superior Court of Chicago, notice is hereby given to the said George S. Cook that the complainant filed his bill of Complaint in said Court, on the Chancery, side thereof, on the 3d day of December, 1862, and that a summons thereupon issued out of said Court against said defendant, returnable on the first Monday of January next, 1863, as is by law required.

Now, unless you, the said George S. Cook, shall personally be and appear before said Superior Court of Chicago, of Cook County, on the first day of the next term thereof, to be holden at Chicago, in said county, on the first Monday of January, 1863, and  plead, answer or demur to the said complainant’s bill of complaint, the same and the matters and things therein charged and stated will be taken as confessed, and a decree entered against you according to the prayer of said bill.  Thomas B. Samuel M. Fassett Dead.  Former Government Photographer Succumbs at Daughter’s Home.

Samuel Montague Fassett, a relative of Representative J. Sloat Fassett, of New York, one-time photographer to the supervising architect of the Treasury Department, and a resident of Washington for about 35 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. W. Delano, 1763 Newton street, Tuesday morning. Mr. Fassett had been ill only several days, and his death was a shock to his relatives. Senile debility was the cause of death.

Funeral services will be held at the daughter’s residence this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Interment will be in Creek Cemetery. Born In Chicago in 1825, at one time Mr. Fassett was one of the prominent photographers of that city. He resided there up to the time he came to Washington in 1875 to accept the position at the Treasury Department. His wife, Mrs. C. Adele Fassett, who died in 1898, was a well-known painter. Her picture in the Senate wing of the Capital, the “Electoral Committee of President Hayes,” was her most famous work, it contains more than 200 portraits.

Mr. Fassett left six children. They are Mrs. Myron A. Pearce, of San Antonio, Tex.; Mrs. Arthur Cristadoro, of New York city, Mrs. W. W. Delano and Mrs. Flora F. Hodge, of this city; Montague Fassett, of New York, and Raphael Fassett of Chicago.

Daguerreotypes.—This method of taking likenesses, is one of the most astonishing discoveries of the age.  Had the discovery been made in the seventeenth century, the author would no doubt have been regarded as a witch, and perhaps been hung or burnt at the stake.  The improvements that have been recently made in the art, are very great.  Not only are the form and features correctly given, but those taken by Mr. Cary, now at Sterling’s Building, give also, to a remarkable degree, the colors of the face.  We examined some dozen or more likenesses, in an unfinished state, at his room, last week, and were surprised at the improvement in this respect.  Some of them were almost as true as life.—We recognized every face with which we were acquainted, at the very first glance.  Among the number, were the likenesses of two children, (brother and sister,) on one plate.—They were complete.  Mr. Cary remains here another week.

Daguerreotyping.  Mr. Cary will remain a few days longer, and will happy to execute Likenesses for all who may be disposed to avail themselves of his services.

Having recently made the most astonishing Improvement in the art of finishing portraits, he is now prepared to furnish them true to nature, and equal in beauty to the finest painting.  He would also inform the public that his time of sitting is from 10 to 45 seconds, being about one-eighth of the time usually occupied by ordinary bunglers in the art; this enables him to catch not only the outline of the individual setting, but the expression of countenance, which cannot be transferred where a person is obliged to sit from 3 to 5 minutes.  Groups of from 2 to 10 persons taken in the same time.

Mr. C. has taken the agency of the new and improved instruments, and can furnish instructions to any who may desire to become good operators.

Editors:  There is no memorial of a departed friend so valuable as an accurate picture that will recall those features which are once so familiar.  This new process affords the means of procuring such a picture by the sitting of a few seconds, which in beauty and accuracy, much exceeds the ordinary miniature painted on ivory.  What can be more accurate than the shadow of an object we would copy, and I am sure nothing can be more beautiful than the colored daguerreotypes, which Mr. Cary of the Sterling Buildings is every day preparing for those who visit his rooms.

This process may be considered as having reached its perfection, for I am sure no one can see the pictures which Mr. Cary furnishes by the aid of the pencil, without feeling that no greater accuracy or beauty, could possibly be attained.  So it appears to me.  Observer.

Punderson, has taken rooms formerly occupied by Dr. Merritt, in Sterling Building, where they are now ready to take likenesses in a manner which cannot be surpassed by any operator in the United States.

The Daguerreotype Art is one of the most astonishing discoveries of this astonishing age.  Portraits accurate as life itself, are now taken in a twinkling, almost.  Mr. Carey, at Sterling Block, is one of the best operators the country affords.  His pictures are the very best specimens of the art.  We have never seen any equal to his.  He remains in town a few days longer,  Those who want good likenesses, true to nature, should give him an immediate call.

Beautiful Daguerreotypes.—We have recently [examined] with much pleasure the very beautiful specimens of Daguerreotyping, executed by Messrs, Broadbent Cary, No. 128 Baltimore street.  These gentlemen, with a perfect knowledge of the art, have availed themselves of the latest improvements made in France and Germany, and now produce a perfect likeness, [which] by the aid of a little colouring, is made to bear [a close] resemblance to a finely executed miniature.—[those] who will take the trouble to examine their [speci ?] will at once acknowledge their great excellence.  [The] rooms of Messrs. Broadbent & Cary are neatly [prepared] for the reception of ladies and gentlemen, and [ ? ] great pains they take to afford entire satisfaction to [those] who favor them with their custom, commends [them] strongly to public patronage.

Daguerreotype Portraits.—We call the attention of our citizens as well as that of strangers visiting the city, to the advertisement of Mr. Broadbent, which appears in our columns this morning.  We have examined several of his likenesses, and unhesitatingly pronounce them superior to any that we have ever before seen.  They have mor the appearance of a painted portrait than the common Daguerreotype likeness. Mr. B’s stay in this city will not be long, and we therefore recommend our friends to give him an early call

Mr. Broadbent’s Daguerreotype Likenesses.—It is only recently that we have paid much attention to the really excellent work of Mr. Broadbent, in this new art.  So repeated have been the failures of all similar attempts here, so imperfect have been the portraits which we have hitherto seen of this kind, that we have never held the method in proper estimations.  The likenesses of Mr. Broadbent are full of merit.  They are perhaps a little too true to be pleasing in some instances, but they are perfect.  The effect of light and shade and foreshortening, is precisely that which the most eminent artist known how to reach, while the peculiar contrast and gradation of colors cause them to present an appearance somewhat between a steel and mezzotint engraving.  Mr. B. has a method of precipitating gold upon the finished picture which prevents any change in it from lapse of time, whether from oxidation or otherwise.  Napoleon was but poorly gratified when Isabey told him that he could paint a picture which should last 400 years.  We can see no reason why these pictures should have any limit to their duration.  Chemically speaking there is a necessity of their continuous perfection.  Their price brings them within the reach of every one.  Mr. B.’s stay in Savannah will not be protracted much longer, as he has engagements elsewhere.  Those therefore, who desire to send cherished friends, true likenesses  of themselves, ought to make immediate application.

Broadbent’s Daguerreotype.  We had often seen notices of the superior excellence of Broadbent’s pictures, and have always heard him spoken of as excelling all others in the Daguerreotype—and we really think him deserving of all the praise that has been awarded him.  His pictures are more highly finished, and have a strength, brilliancy and beauty about them, that we have never seen in Daguerreotype pictures before. 

We have seen a few specimens of Miniature Paintings by Broadbent, which show him to be an artist of very superior skill, and probably his artistical skill may be one reason why he excels in the Daguerreotype.

Mr. B. intimates that he will leave in a few days, and we would advise all those who wish their portraits to call on him at once, as probably there may never occur an opportunity of getting portraits equal to Broadbent’s Daguerreotypes, which are infinitely superior as likenesses, and consequently more valuable, than any painted portrait in the world.

For The Times.  Daguerreotype.  Messrs. Editors:—Having recently visited the operating room of Mr. Broadbent, over Ives & Brothers Store in this city, who is now engaged in taking Miniature likenesses, I was astonished to see what perfection this beautiful art has attained.  Among his specimens I saw many familiar faces which I daily meet, and so natural are they, that were they Busts, instead of Pictures , nothing is wanting save the infusion of the breath of life, to make them real or second self.  Mr. B. being an Artist, (with the aid of the magic pencil, or some other secret charm,) imparts a coloring to his pictures which makes them vie with nature itself.  I understand that he will remain in the city but a few days longer; therefore all persons interested in obtaining a perfect resemblance of themselves, or friends, will improve the golden moment, and resort at once to his room, where almost in a twinkling he will indelibly stamp their features on something more lasting than paper, or durable than wood.

[For The Courier.]  Daguerreotype Portraits.  Those who desire to procure the most perfect likenesses by this beautiful and truly wonderful process, can now have an opportunity of doing so, by calling at the rooms of Mr. Broadbent, in King-street.  This gentleman has carried the practical operation of this science to a perfection which has not been attained by any other artist within our knowledge.  Whether it is the result of the quality of the materials used, or the superior skill of the artist, we cannot say, but the pictures of Mr. Broadbent surpasses any we have ever seen for distinctness and beauty.  They are brought out in such a manner as to resemble the finest engraving, without that unsatisfactory dimness and want of life which characterises most likenesses taken by this process.  For durability, also, they are fully equal to engravings.  Mr. B. now has in his possession portraits, several years old, that present as fresh an appearance as though they had just been retaken, If there are any who doubt what we have stated, we can only say to them call and judge for yourselves.  X. Colored Daguerreotype Portraits.  Mr. Perry[3], from New-York, having taken the rooms recently occupied by Mr. Broadbent, No. 271 King-street, proposes Taking Portraits By The Daguerreotype Process,—and he assures his patrons that his Pictures shall be superior, for beauty and finish, to any that can be produced at any other house in Charleston.

Mr. Perry for several years has had the charge of Mr. Plumb’s establishment in New-York, and produced the pictures for which Mr. Plumb obtained the first premium for the best pictures at the Fair of the American Institute in New-York the several successive years he was with him.  Mr. P. was also commissioned to visit the President’s house at Washington to take the portraits of his family—and also was engaged during the last session of Congress, taking the Portraits of Members of Congress, and other eminent persons.  It is well known the Daguerreotype reverses the picture, making the right appear the left side of the sitter.  Mr. P. has a mode of correcting this error by the use of a speculum which takes portraits or views without reversing them—which is not practiced by others in this city.

Mr. Perry is a practical optician, and manufactures the very best Daguerreotype instruments extant—and has for sale, Perry’s Premium Apparatus, also Plates, Cases, Chemicals, &c. &c.  Instructions given in the most approved process.

Daguerreotype.  We desire to call the attention of our citizens to this beautiful art as practiced  by Mr. Broadbent, whose miniatures are the chef d’ӕuvre of the Daguerreotype.  All who see his pictures testify the warmest admiration of his skill.

His likenesses combine great beauty of finish, and an unusual artistical effect—very unlike ordinary Daguerreotypes, and, beside the merit of fac simile likenesses, they are as strong as steel engravings, and have all the delicacy of color of the most exquisitely painted miniatures.  It must be a great gratification to the family and social circle to possess these beautiful representations of its members and of friends.  All who wish good portraits of themselves or friends would do well to give Mr. Broadbent a call.

Hart & Polley’s store where he has a Sky Light built expressly for the Daguerreotype.  There are several advantages of a sky light—the pictures are stronger, more effective, and of a more pleasing character than those done by side light; the objection of one side of the face being light and the other dark is obviated, and blue eyes can be as well taken as others.

Mr. Broadbent is an artist by profession, which gives him many advantages in the arrangement and finish of his pictures.  He has had, perhaps, mor experience in the Daguerreotype than any other person; having been successfully engaged in it ever since the art has been practiced, and his process is superior to that practiced by others, (either with machinery patented last October, or otherwise,) and he warrants better pictures than can be produced, done elsewhere.—or no charge.

For The Register.  Daguerreotype Portraits.  Mr. Broadbent, one of the most successful Artist in the country, in taking Daguerreotype Likenesses, is still in this City, and will remain but a few day.  We have seen a letter from Prof. Stillman, speaking of Mr. Broadbent’s Pictures, in which he says “that they are decidedly the best specimens of the Art he has ever seen, and are truly elegant and perfect.”

His Likenesses combine great beauty of finish and an unusual artistical effect—very much unlike ordinary Daguerreotypes; and besides the merit of fac simile Likenesses, they are as strong as steel engravings, and have all the delicacy of color of exquisitely painted Miniatures.  All who wish good portraits of themselves and friends, would do well to give Mr. Broadbent a call immediately, as he will leave soon.

Broadbent & Cary are neatly [prepared] for the reception of ladies and gentlemen, and [ ? ] great pains they take to afford entire satisfaction to [those] who favor them with their custom, commends [them] strongly to public patronage.

Likeness Of George Thompson.—We have seen, at various times three or four different pictures of this eminent man, but they were all failures—we had almost said caricatures.  Correct in outline, they yet lacked expression, and were powerless to convey a right impression of the man whose lineaments they professed to present.  But we have before us now a picture of another sort, and one that does something like justice to its subject.  It is an engraving by Illman & Sons, from a Daguerreotype by Broadbent & Co.; and those who have seen Mr. Thompson will, we think, agree with us that it is not only a striking likeness, but a beautiful work of art.  The engraver has been fortunate in catching the spirited and life-like expression so effectually traced by the sun, and in looking at the picture you might almost think that the man himself stood before you, and was about to give you an illustration of his oratorical powers.

It is for sale at the Anti-Slavery Office, price 37½ cents.

Broadbent & Co., Chestnut St.—What specimens we saw, chiefly daguerreotypes, were in the first style of the art, with a few exceptions. Good daguerreotypes are not so much appreciated as formerly, as the attention of true artists is directed now particularly to Photography on paper and glass. As daguerreotyping has not yet reached its acme of perfection, I am very glad to see that there are some artists who are still striving for its improvement; although I acknowledge the superiority of paper and collodion photographs.

We Noticed also, among the photographic specimens some magnificent works by Broadbent.  Other cities may boast as much as they will of the advancement of the photographic art—Philadelphia still, as we think, bears away the palm.  Some of the works in the collection of Broadbent surpass any we have ever seen, either of home or foreign execution.  Those of them which are plain have high merits, while those that are colored are, if possible, even more attractive.

Franklin Institute.—The photographs of Mr. Broadbent, in the upper saloon of the Institute, are beautiful specimens.  Among them we noticed a likeness of John Grigg, Esq., which is brilliantly executed, presenting a most spirited fac simile of the features of that well known and highly respected gentleman.  The coloring of all the specimens in Mr. Broadbent’s collection is extremely life-like.  Indeed, the entire display he makes at the Fair is of the best possible character.

Copartnership Notice.—Philadelphia, June 3, 1863.—The Firm of Broadbent & Co., Photographers is this day dissolved by the retirement of S. Broadbent.

The business will be continued by his late partners under the name Wenderoth & Taylor.  Mr. Wenderoth, the artist and the inventor of the Ivorytype and Wenderotype, who was associated with the late firm for four years, will continue at the head of the artists department, and Mr. Taylor, also a partner in the late firm, will remain, as heretofore, in charge of the business in the reception room.  S. Died.  Broadbent.—On Saturday evening.  July 24, 1880, Mr. Samuel Broadbent, in his seventieth year of age.

The funeral will take place from his late residence, on Wednesday, 28th inst., at 3 o’clock P. M.

Samuel Broadbent is still a work in progress, Philadelphia newspapers have not been thoroughly checked.

Deceased.  Samuel Broadbent, of Broadbent Taylor, photographers, Chestnut street, Philadelphia died at his residence in that city , on Saturday in the 70th year of his age. 

Mr. Broadbent formerly lived in this city, and had a gallery in the building at Third and Market streets, belonging to Mr. Phillip Plunket.  Mr. Elwood Garret, the skillful photographer of this city learned the photographic art with Mr. Broadbent while in this city.  Mr. Broadbent was one of the best artist in Philadelphia, and a gentlemen of refinement, pleasant and reliable.  He was very active for his age and continued to be at his business until within a few weeks of his death. He had a wide circle of friends and his death will be sincereely (sic.) regretted

N. Cassedy. Dec. 6, 1855. N. B.—Having business South I have sold my interest in the Daguerrean Rooms at Port Jervis to Mr. N. Cassedy.  The Rooms which have been neatly fitted up and newly furnished, are now in nice order.  To those that want a good picture I would say give him a call.  G. J. Peter Laurens

Peter Laurens was recorded in an advertisement that ran from June 1 to September 5, 1843 In The New York Herald (New York, New York).  Philadelphia Daguerreotype Establishment.  Exchange Building, Rooms 26 & 27.  The Subscribers, having procured the agency for the sale of Voigtander’s Daguerreotype Apparatus, constructed according to Professor Petzval’s calculation, have on hand a large assortment of these Apparatus, and artists as well as amateurs of their art, wishing to procure a good apparatus, will find it to their advantage to procure instruments of this construction.  They also have lately imported a large quantity of German and French plates, and all the chemicals used in their art, which they warrant in every respect, as they are made to their order.  Polishing substances, and morocco cases, and all necessary materials, are sold on the most reasonable terms.  The following gentlemen have agreed to act as their agents, viz:—                                                                                E. N. Cassedy was recorded in two advertisement in the Tri-State Union (Port Jervis, New York.) The first appeared on December 6, 1855 and ran until February 7, 1856. Cassedy’s Daguerrean Gallery.  Open every day. The second advertisement appeared on February 14 and ran until May 8, 1856.  Now Is The Time For A Daguerreotype.  At N. Cassedy’s Sky Light Daguerrean Rooms where pictures are taken and warranted to give satisfaction or no charge.—Daguerreotypes copied from others at short notice.  Gallery opposite Kophman’s Store, Pike Street, Port Jervis.      N. N. Cassedy does not appear in other photographic directories. George J. Smith is active in Savannah Georgia from 1856-1860[1] and is probably the same person.

Dr. A. Caspari

1843-1844       Address Unknown, Richmond, Virginia.

Dr. A. Caspari was recorded twice in advertisements that appeared the in The New York Herald (New York, New York) on June 1, and ran until September 5, 1843 and on October 17, 1843 to January 26, 1844.  It is unknown if Dr. Caspari is a daguerreotypist, a supplier or just an agent for the Langenheim Brothers.  Philip Haas, Edward White, and Peter Laurens[1] are daguerreotypist, Dr. Caspari and William West are not recorded in other photographic directories that I have access to.

The second advertisement ran on  October 17, 1843.  Peter Laurens has been replaced by Samuel Broadbent for the Southern States.  Philadelphia Daguerreotype Establishment.  Exchange Building, Rooms 26 & 27.  The Subscribers, has received a large supply of Voigtander’s celebrated Daguerreotype Apparatus, large and small sizes, with achromatic lenses made according to Professor Petzval’s calculation.

Also a new supply of the best plates and chemicals, which he warrants good and sells at reduced prices.  The following gentlemen have agreed to act as their agents, viz:—                E.
