G. W. Murphy was recorded in an announcement and an advertisement in The Spirit of Democracy (Woodsfield, Ohio).  The announcement appeared on March 8, 1854.  Daguerreotypes.—Mr. G. W. Murphy has taken rooms at Dr. J. L. Dye’s, and is prepared to take likenesses for all those who may desire them.  Give them a call.

The advertisement ran from March 22 to May 3, 1854.  Daguerreotype Likenesses!  For $1.50 Only!  G. W. Murphy would respectfully inform the citizens of Woodsfield and vicinity, that he has taken rooms at Dr. J. L. Dye’s, where he will be happy to see all who desire Correct Miniatures, of themselves or friends, according to the latest improvements in the Daguerrean art, in a style superior to any that have been taken in the=is place heretofore.  Also, particular attention will be given to taking copies of Portraits, Paintings, Pictures, &c.

“Secure the shadow ere the Substance fade,” and it will never change it rightly taken, but remain a true and faithful semblance of the original.  Any person sitting for a portrait, will not be expected to take it, unless they and their friends think it correct and satisfactory.  Call and see specimens.

1852                Allen’s Block, Opposite the Odd Fellows’ Hall, Ravenna, Ohio.

Murphy & Gorton (Thomas Murphy & C. Gorton) were recorded in two advertisements in the Portage Sentinel (Ravenna, Ohio).  The first advertisement ran from March 15 to May 17, 1852.  Daguerreotypes, Mr. Thomas Murphy, having become sole proprietor of the rooms formerly occupied by B. S. Morrill and himself, has taken in to partnership Mr. C. Gorton. They would most respectfully announce to the ladies and gentlemen of Ravenna, and surrounding country, that they have fitted up the rooms, and are now ready to take pictures in a style not surpassed in the State.  No trouble will be spared to make every thing pleasant and agreeable, and give entire satisfaction.—Pictures taken for One Dollar and upwards.  A good variety of plain and fancy stock always on hand.  Call and see us.  Murphy & Gorton.  Ravenna, March 9, 1852.

The second advertisement appeared on May 17, 1852.  Opposition!!  Cheaper Than Ever Pictures For Fifty Cents!!  The undersigned will for four weeks from this date, furnish Pictures for Fifty Cents, in good Cases,  We challenge competition.  Come One !  Come All!!  Now is your time.  Office hours from 8 A. M., to 4 P. M. Murphy & Gorton.  Ravenna, May 14, 1852.

J. H. Murphey (Murphy) was recorded in two advertisements and two announcements in the Cooper’s Clarksburg Register (Clarksburg, Virginia, [West Virginia]). The first advertisement ran from December 5, 1856 to May 14, 1858. J. H. Murphey, Daguerrean and Ambrotype artist, having purchased the apparatus of Mr. Richmond will continue the business as heretofore, and would say to all those wishing Pictures to give him a call.

The first announcement appeared on September 25.  Last Chance.—J. H. Murphy’s Gallery of Ambrotypes, Photographs, &c., will be open for taking pictures until Saturday, the 3d of October, when it will be permanently closed.  Those wishing pictures had better apply at once.

The second advertisement ran from March 27, 1857 to May 14, 1858.  Murphey’s Gallery Of Daguerreotypes, Photographs and Ambrotypes, on Main Street, Clarksburg, Va.  J. H. Murphy has fitted up a gallery for the above pictures, and having availed himself of all the latest improvements of the art, he flatters himself that he can give full satisfaction.  The public invited to call and examine specimens.  Cloudy days are preferred except for children.

The second announcement appeared on January 8, 1858.  Open Again.—Mr. J. H. Murphy has again opened his Ambrotype Gallery, for the accommodation of all who may desire to obtain these elegant and durable pictures.  He has secured the services of Mr. Spencer, an experienced artist, who takes off “the human face divine” in the highest style of the art.  Call soon, for this will be the last chance.

S. T. Munson

S. T. Munson was recorded in one advertisement and two announcements in The Democratic Sentinel and Harrison County Farmer (Cadiz, Ohio). The advertisement ran from March 30 to April 20, 1843. Daguerreotype Portraits. Splendid Daguerreotype Portraits taken by S. T. Munson, at the Blewett House.  Room No. 5 on the third floor; these pictures are like life, and can not be removed; prices 6 and 8 dollars, according to the size, hours from 10 A. M, to 4 P. M.  March 23d, 1842

The first announcement appeared on April 20, 1843.  Mr. Munson is still at the Blewett house taking Daguerreotype Portraits.  His likenesses, are perfectly accurate, and it depends upon the faces entirely, whether they are handsome or not.  They nothing extenuate nor do they set down aught in malice, but such as nature made them they are delineated.

The second announcement appeared on May 18, 1843.  Mr. S. T. Munson the Daguerreotype operator, will be absent for some ten or twelve days on a professional visit to Aberdeen, when he will again return to our city, and for a few days only will tender his professional services to the citizens of this place, we must cordially recommend Mr. Munson as a skillful operator, his executions are not surpassed, and we will add, not equaled by anything of the kind that we have ever seen.  Those who wish to obtain a perfect and indelible likeness of themselves or their families, will do well to favor him with a call.—Communicated.

Munsell & McNaught

1848                Norris’s Building, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Munsell & McNaught were recorded in an announcement that appeared on December 16, 1848 in the Indiana State Sentinel (Indianapolis, Indiana).  Daguerreotype Likenesses.—A rare opportunity is now offered to those who desire to obtain correct likenesses by the daguerreotype process.

First in the list of operators at present in this city, are our friends Munsell & McNaught.  As a scientific chemist, Dr. Munsell has few superiors any where, and as a practical operator in photographic miniatures, large and small, McNaught has no superior in this country.  We use this expression deliberately, and trial will prove its truth.  We visited “Plumbe’s Daguerrean Gallery,” and various other similar rooms, on a late journey to the east, and among the hundreds of specimens which we saw, we did not see one superior, if indeed any equal, to those which can be exhibited by Mr. McNaught.  We therefore feel it due to unpretending but real merit, to recommend our friends to call at the rooms of the gentlemen her indicated, and see for themselves; and we urge them to do so immediately, as we understand that one of them (Mr. McN.) will soon leave town.  It is a common error that one man can make these pictures as well as another; but this is a very great mistake.  To make good ones, requires much practical knowledge, and some good taste; and these qualities are united in these gentlemen to an eminent degree.  Let our friends at once call at the office of Dr. Munsell, in Norris’s building, and see for themselves.

Secondly: we have an artist in the person of Mr. Foster, room opposite Temperance Hall, who has been but a few days in the city.  He exhibits some excellent specimens, and promises to give satisfaction to all who may call his services into requisition.  We have no doubt of his ability to redeem all the promises he may make, and we mean to try his skill in a day or two, upon our handsome phiz.

Munsell & McNaught are not recorded in other photographic directories as being active in Indianapolis, Indiana.

E. L. Mowry was listed in two in the Lewisburg Chronicle (Lewisburg, Pennsylvania). The first advertisement ran from April 17 to August 21, 1857. New Photographic Art Gallery In Ammon’s Block, Lewisburg.  Ambrotypes—Melainotypes!  E. L. Mowry, Artist.  Ambrotypes and Melainotypes made in the most beautiful style, of the art.  The Melainotype is a new process, taken on a prepared Sheet Iron Plate, and for brilliancy and vigor of tone is unsurpassed by any other known process.

Step into the Gallery, examine specimens, and judge for yourselves.  Prices to suit the times—satisfaction guaranteed.  Room in Ammons’s Block, second story, over Ammons’ Store.

The second advertisement ran from April 22 to 29, 1859.  Mowry’s Sky-Light Gallery, Over Jos. M’Fadden’s Hardware Store, formerly Houghton’s Shoe Store, market Street, Lewisburg, Pa.

Ambrotypes, melainotypes, &c., in the usual superior style.  In addition to these pictures, I am now prepared to take Photographs, large or small, equal to the best made anywhere.  Also Hallotypes.  These pictures are colored to represent life, and are superior to any oil painting, giving that fidelity of expression and features that can be produced only by the Camera.  These pictures are patented, and I have the exclusive right for Union county.  Call and examine specimens.

Mowrey & Russell (Frank Mowrey) were recorded in four announcements.  The first appeared on September 22, 1855 in the Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro, Vermont).  Fifth Annual Fair Of The Vermont State Agricultural Society.  The fifth annual Fair of the Vermont State Agricultural Society was held at Rutland on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of last week….

The Floral Hall department contained a fine collection of flowers, some excellent needle work, oil paintings, daguerreotypes, crystalotypes and ambrotypes.  Messrs. J. L. & H. M. Lovell of this village received the first premium on the first two varieties of photographs, and Mowry & Russell of Rutland on the last.  Both exhibitions were very creditable to their respective artists.

The second announcement appeared on September 19, 1856 in the Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont).  The State Fair….Floral Hall….Mowrey & Russell of Rutland, and T. M. Parker and Jones of Burlington, occupied considerable space with an array of ambrotypes and daguerreotypes, of uncommon merit…

The newspaper advertisement ran from January 14 to March 4, 1858 in the New York Daily Tribune (New York, New York).  Frederick’s Photographic Temple Of Art, Nos. 585 and 587 Broadway, opposite Metropolitan Hotel.—Photographs, Hallotypes, Daguerreotypes and Ambrotypes, in every style.  Photographs by Mr. Moulton, formerly with Gurney.

H. D. W. Moulton is recorded in other photographic directories but no mention of a connection to Frederick, Gurney or being active in 1858.
