Alexander Gibbs Nye

Information from A Genealogy of the Nye Family, 1907. p.379-380.  Dr. Alexander Gibbs Nye, born at Falmouth, Massachusetts, August 24, 1817, and died in Weymouth, Massachusetts, October 7, 1901.  In early life he was a painter and worked several years at that trade in Boston and New York, and on one occasion he went to Mobile and New Orleans.  He studied higher art and achieved some fame as a portrait and sketch painter.  Later he took up the Daguerreotype business and carried it on extensively for several years in Plymouth, Massachusetts, afterward moving to Boston and them to Weymouth.  Afterwards he gave his attention to dentistry…

Alexander Gibbs Nye is recorded in other photographic directories as being active in Boston and Weymouth but not in Plymouth, Massachusetts.  It is possibly he is the same A. Nye selling his daguerrean apparatus in 1847 in yesterday’s post.

A. Nye was recorded in one advertisement that ran from February 23 to 26, 1847 in The Daily Chronotype (Boston, Massachusetts).  Important To Daguerreotype Artists.  A Complete Apparatus And Fixture for the business, for sale at a great sacrifice.  Apply to A. Nye, 475 Washington st.

A. Nye is not listed in other photographic directories as being active in Boston, Massachusetts in 1847.  It is possible that this is Alexander Gibbs Nye who was first active prior to 1844 in Plymouth, Massachusetts and in 1844 in Boston and in 1853 in Weymouth.  It is possible while in Boston in 1847 he is selling his apparatus and not actively practicing photography.  See Alexander Gibbs Nye in tomorrows post.

James D. Nott

1855                Address Unknown, Fayetteville, North Carolina.

James D. Nott appeared in two announcements in the Weekly North Carolina Standard (Raleigh, North Carolina).  The first appeared on October 24, 1855.  The State Fair.  The Third annual Fair of the Agricultural Society of North Carolina, commenced in this City on Tuesday last, and will close to-day, Friday….Floral Hall.

Daguerreotypes in oil, and ambrotypes, by Mr. Havens, of Raleigh—Very life-like and handsome.—Some fine daguerreotypes, by J. D. Nott, Fayetteville.

The second announcement appeared on December 19, 1855.  Cumberland County Fair.  The several Examining Committees of the Agricultural Society of Cumberland County awarded the following Premiums at their Annual Exhibition, Nov. 28th, 29th, and 30th, 1855….Sundries….

James D. Nott is recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry as J. D. Nott as being active in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1856-1857.  Mr. Havens is possibly T. J. Havens or C. B. Havens both are recorded in other photographic directories.

E. Norton

1853                Rooms in Younglove’s Hall, Union Village, New York.

E. Norton was recorded in one advertisement that ran from July 28 to October 20, 1853 in the Union-Village Journal (Union, New York).  Daguerrean Rooms.  E. Norton Would announce to the citizens of Union Village and vicinity, that he still remains at Younglove’s Hall, where he would be happy to wait upon all who wish Perfect Likenesses.  Lockets, Pins, and Finger Rings, filled in the best manner.

North & James

1846                Address Unknown, Springfield, Massachusetts

North & James (William C. North & possibly George W. James) were recorded in one announcement that appeared on October 14, 1846 in the Daily Republican (Springfield, Massachusetts).  Reports and Premiums, Made and awarded by the Hampden Agricultural Society, at its third Exhibition, Exhibition in Springfield, Oct. 7 and 8, 1846.

…The Committee were pleased to see in the exhibition so many good Daguerreotype miniatures.  Beautiful pictures were exhibited, executed both by Mr. North, now Messrs. North & James, also by Mr. Cooley.  We saw no difference in the pictures as regards merit.  Were we to make our choice, one would be as acceptable as the other.  Much praise we think is due them both for their truthful likenesses.  Respectfully submitted, W. S. Elwell, Chairman.

North & Ives

1845                147 Warren Street, Hudson, New York.

North & Ives were recorded in one announcement and one advertisement in The Columbia Washingtonian (Hudson, New York).  The announcement appeared on December 4, 1845.  Daguerreotype Likenesses.  It is with pleasure that we refer to the likenesses taken by the Messrs. North & Ives of this city.  In our opinion they are equal to any of the kind produced in the country, we saw in the Post Office the other day, among others equally good, a likeness of Mr. Colto, and another of Capt. L. Paddock taken by them, which any artist might be proud of Ladies, when you have a leisure hour, walk in at 147 Warren Street, and examine their specimens.

The advertisement appeared on December 4, 1845.  North & Ives, Daguerreian Artists. Takes this method of informing the citizens of Hudson and its vicinity, that they will leave this city next week.  They therefore invite all who contemplate setting for their likenesses, to call as soon as practicable.

Likenesses taken in cloudy as well as clear weather, and warranted satisfactory.  Rooms in the Post Office building Warren street.

J. B. Norris

1852                Rooms on Elm Street over McAllaster, Penn Yan, New York.

J. B. Norris was recorded in one advertisements that appeared on June 1, 1852 in the Penn Yan Democrat (Penn-Yan, New York).  New Daguerrean Gallery, On Elm Street, Penn Yan.  The subscriber would respectfully inform the citizens of Penn Yan and vicinity, that he has recently furnished, and has now successfully furnished, and has now in successful operation the rooms recently occupied by Mrs. Sacket, as a Millinery establishment, three doors from Main-st., over McAllaster [Recess].

The above rooms are furnished with every facilely for taking first rate Likenesses, and with all the late improvements in the art, and put up in the most fashionable style of Cases or Lockets of all sizes, and at the most reasonable prices.

I shall not expect any person to take their picture away if they do not give entire satisfaction.  Pictures taken of sick or deceased persons at their residence, if desired.  Rooms open from 8 A. M., till 5 P. M.  Hours for children from 10 to 12.  J. B. Norris.  April 27, 1852.

C. N. Nolan

1851-1852       9 & 10 Field’s Exchange, Malone, New York.

C. N. Nolan was recorded in two advertisement in the Frontier Palladium (Malone, New York).

The first advertisements ran from October 9 to December 4, 1851.  Daguerreotypes.  The subscriber would inform the citizens of Malone and vicinity that he has taken rooms in Field’s Exchange, where he will wait upon all who may desire his services.  Daguerrean Rooms, Nos. 9, and 10. Field’s Exchange, Up stairs.

Daguerreotype likenesses taken all hours of the day between 9, A. M. and 4, P. M.  He pledges himself to give a good likeness, for less money than any other artist who has visited this place, and will warrant his pictures not to fade.  The public are respectfully invited to call and examine his specimens.  C. N. Nolan.

The second advertisement ran from March 4 to April 8, 1852.  No Humbug!  Sabin & Nolan respectfully announce to the inhabitants of Malone and vicinity that they have purchased the Saloon in the basement of P. B. Miller’s Hotel, formerly occupied by A. P. White, where they will constantly keep on hand Hot Coffee, Pies, Cakes, &c.  Oysters and Fruit in their season.

C. N. Nolan would also inform the public that he will attend to all persons who will patronize him in the Daguerreotype line for a few days more.  Rooms in Field’s Exchange, No.’s 9 and 10, up stairs.  Open between 9 A. M. and 4 P. M.

Nixon

1846                Address Unknown, Union Village, New York.

Nixon of the partnership of Grant & Nixon is recorded in one announcement that ran on August 27, 1846 in the Washington County Journal (Union Village, New York).  Premium Daguerreotype Miniatures.  We take much pleasure in commending the Miniature Gallery of Messrs. Grant & Nixon to the attention of our citizens and the public generally.  They are located in the same building with ourself and in the room directly opposite our office, where they are daily producing some of the finest Pictures and most exact Likenesses we have ever seen.  Their Pictures are beautifully drawn out and possess a clearness, richness, life-like accuracy and brilliancy of finish we have rarely seen equaled and never surpassed! They have likenesses of several eminent public men and a great variety of splendid specimens in the Photographic Art.  Of course you will not take our word for all this, but call and see for yourselves—when, we are quite sure you will not fail to let the Operators give you a sitting of 20 or 30 seconds, just to see what a few glances of the sun beams can do.
