E. B. Taylor was recorded in three announcements and five advertisements in the Fayetteville Observer (Fayetteville, Tennessee).  The first announcement appeared on April 26, 1855.  Daguerreotypes—Mr. E. B. Taylor, Daguerrean Artist, has taken a room in the large brick building, south side of the Square, where he may be found on Friday and Saturday of each week, ready to furnish customers with any number of superior pictures that may be desired.  He has an excellent camera, good light, fine and common plates and cases, the best of chemicals, and what is more, he knows how to use them.  Give him a call—he is a clever, accommodating gentleman.

The first advertisement ran from April 26 to May 24, 1855.  Daguerreotypes!  The subscriber has the pleasure of informing the residents of Fayetteville and vicinity, that he has taken an excellent room in this pace, in the large brick, south side of the public square, where all are respectfully invited to call.  Come whether you want pictures or not, and see what is to be seen.

My stay will be short—only every Friday and Saturday of each week—come without delay.  Secure some precious Memento of your friends before death takes them from you.

The second announcement appeared on May 24, 1855.  Daguerreotypes—By reference to the advertisement of Mr. E. B. Taylor, Daguerrean Artist, it will be seen that he will close his room in this place the last of this week, and open on Friday next week, at Millville.  To our many friends in that region, we commend him as a good operator, and an honorable, gentlemanly, courteous man.

The third announcement appeared on June 26, 1856.  Daguerreotypes—Mr. E. B. Taylor has opened his daguerrean rooms at the Sulphur Spring, eight miles north-west of this place.  Our friends in that section who may desire good pictures, would do well to give him a call.  See his card in another column.

The second advertisement ran from June 26 to July 31, 1856.  Pictures.  Do You Want Good Pictures?  Then come one come all to the Sulphur Spring, at Craighead.  Come and see my new specimens—and you that want your pictures, come and sit for one, and I will try to give satisfaction to all.  If I can’t, I will not bind you to take it.  Come soon as my stay is limited. 

The third advertisement ran from February 5 to October 29, 1857.  E. B. Taylor, Daguerrean, Ambrotype, Melainotype Artist, South side of the Square, Fayetteville, middle door of the long brick, and 3d story.

The Melainotype is something entirely new.  It can be seen alike in all lights.  There is no metallic glare in the way as is in a Daguerreotype, and cannot be surpassed by any other Pictures for their richness and beauty, and they can be sold from 75 cents up.  Pictures taken in cloudy weather as well as fair.  I only ask from 1 to 3 seconds in clear weather to take children’s Pictures.  The Melainotype Pictures can be sent in a letter, without a case, and not be soiled.  Come everybody, and see what is to be seen, and get Pictures if you want.  If I can’t give satisfaction before finishing, there is no obligation on the purchaser.      

The fourth advertisement ran from October 29 to November 19, 1857.  E. B. Taylor, Artist, Fayetteville, Tenn.  Takes this method of informing his friends and the public generally, that his business requires him to close his Gallery in Fayetteville in a few days—or at farthest, 3 weeks.  All those desiring Pictures will come.  I have some fine Frames and fine Cases I will sell very low. The price of other Cases as heretofore.  Those owing me will please pay against that time.  If not paid without suing for it, be assured you never get another on a credit.                            

The fifth advertisement ran from February 18 to 25, 1858.  E. B. Taylor, Has opened his Picture Gallery at his old stand, South side of the Square, Fayetteville, middle door of the long brick building, and third story.—My room will be open to all who will favor me with a call.  Always kept on hand an assortment of Cases and Frames.  Prices as heretofore.  I will say to those owing me, that I am obliged to have money to carry on the business. And if settlement is not made by the First Monday in March, I will certainly place their account in the hands of an officer for collection.

O. A. Taft is recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Register as being active in 1860 in Middlebury, Vermont.

Swain & Paul were recorded in one advertisement that ran from May 23 to September 26, 1856 in The Weekly American Banner (Yazoo City, Mississippi).  Call, See, And Judge For Yourselves!  Messrs. Swain & Paul of Natchez, informs the public that they have located permanently in Yazoo City, and have opened at those beautiful rooms over J. N. Ratcliff an Ambrotype, Daguerreotype, and Photograph Gallery, where they are prepared to take pictures in all the Photograph Art in a style not to be surpassed by any Artist in the county.  They have a way (peculiar to themselves) of coloring the Ambrotype which makes the most beautiful picture ever produced.

Messrs. S. & P. take pleasure in explaining to those desirous of ascertaining the mode of taking and putting up of these truly elegant and indestructible pictures.  Yazoo City

A. J. Sutton was recorded in one advertisement that ran from November 12 to December 3, 1856 in The Spirit of Democracy (Woodsfield, Ohio).  Ambrotype Likenesses Of the Finest, Latest. And most Fashionable Style of the Art.  Having taken rooms at the Monroe House, I would respectfully inform the citizens of Woodsfield and vicinity, that I am prepared to furnish them with good Ambrotypes at prices from one to five dollars.

I am also prepared to take Daguerreotypes of the best quality for Lockets pictures, &c.  I warrantee these pictures not to fade, unless broken or otherwise exposed.  Give me a call and see for yourselves.  If you are not pleased, I make no charge.  Ladies and gentlemen, one and all, call and get the shadow ere the substance fades.

J. K. Sutterley was recorded in one advertisement that ran from November 18 to 25, 1858 in Glasgow Weekly Times (Glasgow, Missouri).  Now is the Time To get a Life-like Ambrotype of Yourself and Children.  The undersigned would inform the people of Glasgow and vicinity, that he has taken the large front room over White’s Drug Store, on Front Street, where he will remain but a short time, to give those an opportunity that wish to get a good Picture of Themselves or family.

My motto is, “satisfactory work or no pay.”—A good Picture can be had as well in a cloudy, as a clear day.  Ladies and gentlemen are respectfully invited to call and examine specimens of my work.

Gallery open from 9 to 12 A. M., and from 1 to 5 P. M.  The greatest pains taken with children. J. K. Sutterley, Artist.

J. K. Sutterley is not recorded as being active in Glasgow, Missouri in 1858.  James K. Sutterley is listed in other directories as being active in Chicago, Illinois during this time period, It is unknown if they are the same person, the distance between Chicago, Illinois and Glasgow, Missouri is four hundred miles.

D. Sutphen was recorded in one advertisement that ran from December 25 to December 30, 1859 in the Geneva Daily Gazette (Geneva, New York.)  Sutphen’s Photographic, Ambrotype, and Daguerreotype Gallery.  No. 6, Seneca-St., Opposite The Post Office.  The subscriber would respectfully inform the citizens of Geneva and surrounding towns, that he is ready to make all kinds of Camera pictures.—His long experience in the business, and well adjusted chemicals, enables him to make as good pictures as the art can produce.  To be convinced of the fact you need only call and sit for a picture.

If you want a good Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, or Photograph, call at Sutphen’s.  Everything shall be done that is necessary to make this a first-class room, and to make first-rate pictures.

Remember the place, No. 6, Seneca street, over Van Deren’s.  D. Sutphen.

D. Sutphen is not recorded as being active in Geneva, New York.  Craig’s Daguerreian Registry does list a David Sutpen as being active in Moravia, New York in 1859.  The distance between the two towns is about 48 miles.  It is unknown if they are the same person but the probability is there.

William Summerhays was recorded in one advertisement that was recorded in the Nantucket Inquire (Nantucket, Massachusetts) on May 4, 1858.  The subscriber is now prepared to take those splendid Milleneotypes, which are far superior to anything yet discovered for lockets.  He also continues to take the Ambrotypes, in a style unsurpassed.  Persons wishing an imperishable picture of themselves or friends can obtain them at the most reasonable prices at the Saloon on Centre Street.

The fourth announcement appeared in the Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) on  September 16, 1859.  The State Fair…Floral Hall…Mr. A. F. Styles of Burlington, also occupies considerable space with Photographs—some of them quite good, especially the views.  A Photographic view of High Bridge is particularly excellent.

The fifth announcement appeared in the Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro, Vermont) on September 24, 1859.  Ninth Annual Fair of the Vermont State Agricultural Society.  In accordance with arrangements effected last year, the ninth annual Fair of the Vermont State Agricultural Society was held at Burlington on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th days of September, inst, on the grounds occupied by the Society in 1856 and again in 1858….Premiums Awarded…Floral Hall…

The sixth announcement appeared in the Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) on  September 23, 1859.  The State Fair…Photographs…Though the committee assign a second place of honor to the plain photographs, exhibited by Mr. A. F. Styles, of Burlington, there are among them many specimens, of great merit. 

A. F. Styles or (A. C. Styles) is recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry as A.F. or A. J. Styles as being active in Burlington and St. Albans, Vermont in 1860. 

William M. Straight

William M. Straight was recorder in three advertisements in The Brockport Republic  (Brockport, New York).  The first advertisement appeared on January 7, 1858.  Ambrotypes!  For Ten Cents.  The subscriber, wishing to accommodate himself to the “Hard Times,” proposes to take Ambrotypes, one day in each week, for the small sum of Ten Cents, each.

Those whom the hard times have afflicted so much that they cannot afford a better one, will please call at Straight’s Gallery on Wednesday of any week, Where they can have their Ambrotypes taken at the above price, the weather making no difference.

He also has a variety of Ambrotype Stock, Which he will put up at proportionately low prices, varying from ten cents to ten dollars.  Remember the place is—Straight’s Gallery, sign of the big Camera, over the Post Office, Brockport.  Wm. M. Straight, Artist.

The second advertisement dated April 25, 1858 ran from October 15 to December 17, 1858.

“Secure the Shadow before the Substance fades.”  New Daguerrean Establishment.  The undersigned has opened a very pleasant and convenient suite of Daguerrean Rooms in Randal’s Block, over the Post Office, where he is prepared at all times to do anything in the Daguerreotyping line in an artistic manner and very cheap.  He is putting up neat and well taken pictures in good one-ninth size cases, for the small sum of 50 Cents each.  Also pictures to send by mail, for 25 Cents, which is more than half loss than was ever done before in Brockport.  He also manufactures those beautiful Door Plates at short notice.

Stoutnour was recorded in one advertisement dated June 10 and that ran on June 17 & 24, 1857 in the True American (Steubenville, Ohio).  Ambrotypes.  Call at Stoutnour’s Gallery andexamine the new improvements in Ambrotyping introduced by Mr. C. A. Griffin, of New York. Pictures taken at this Gallery are equaled by few and excelled by none.  Perfect pictures taken in from 1 to 3 seconds.  Market st., opposite Hening & Melvin’s Drug Emporium.  je 10.
