Photography.—It has been noted as the characteristic of the most refined taste, that it “loves t linger on the magic face of human beauty,” and truly if we range the vast domains of nature in search of that which is most lovely to the eye, and also most interesting to the mind, it is certainly found in the light and shade of the human countenance.

How many have spent their lifetime in trying to portray it with the pencil, and how few have succeeded in giving that living expression to their works which the original possess.  But the recent great improvements in the art of Photography, in a few seconds of time have enabled the operator to catch them all.

We know of no fift which one friend can make to another, which will be, at the same time so cheap and so appropriate, as a good Daguerreotype Likeness—and we know of no place at which (for one week more) or citizens can better supply themselves with these agreeable “remembrances,” than at the Rooms of Mr. Hulanicki, 90 Genesee-st.  See his advertisement, in our last paper.

Domestic Industry.  Almost every person among us who is acquainted with the industry of our country on a large scale, is in favor of continuing the operation of those laws which give it encouragement; and under which it is generally prosperous.  A perusal of the following extracts from the recent speech of Mr. Tallmadge at New-York, will astonish many who know but little of the magnitude or the variety of our manufactures.

Gavit’s Daguerreotype Gallery.  Mr. Oliphant,—I last week visited the Daguerreotype Gallery of D. E. Gavit, late of Albany.  Although I Have had the pleasure of seeing many fine specimens of this beautiful art.  I never saw any, that for magnificence of execution, and faithfulness of representation would compare with those taken by Mr. Gavit.  His pictures unlike those taken by most other artist, present every feature as perfect as they exist in the person taken.  The eyes, the expression of the countenance, and the complexion, are all taken perfectly, which in my opinion render them equal, if not superior to the best Miniature Likenesses upon ivory.  And I sincerely hope Mr. Gavit may receive that patronage from the citizens of this village, which his talents and his superiority in his business deserve.  Auburn, Dec. 1, 1845.         G. We insert the above with pleasure, conscious that by such course we are but doing an act of justice to Mr. G., whose beautiful specimens of the perfection to which this recently discovered art has been brought, deserve the highest praise.  The reader is referred also to his advertisement.

Daguerreotype.  Daniel E. Gavit, Premium Photographist, late of the firm of Walker & Gavit, Albany, respectfully informs the citizens of Auburn, that he has opened his Gallery at No. 85 Genesee street, up stairs, for a limited term of Ten Days, and will be happy to wait on those who require his services and will favor him with their patronage.

The Gallery contains perhaps, the largest and most unique variety of specimens ever exhibited in Western New York; containing many of our most eminent statesmen and others, all taken from life, viz: Hon. Mr. Editor,—A correspondent in your last, in alluding to the Daguerreotype Gallery of Mr. Gavit, quotes the old saying, that a “new broom sweeps clean.”  I believe all who have seen Mr. G’s specimens in the art alluded to, up to the present time, will concur with me in the remark that his broom has so far the advantage of many others that have been known in this section, that it still retains its newness and freshness.

Another Fire In Albany.—The Evening Journal says, James Kidd’s beautiful building, Nos. 480 and 482 Broadway, was destroyed by fire on Saturday morning.  The upper part of the building was occupied in part by S. Stephens, Esq. as a law Office, Gavitt & Co. Daguerreotypists, and several persons.  Nearly all the property in the building was insured.…

A Daguerreotype.—We were shown yesterday an exquisite specimen of the excellence to which Daguerreotyping has been brought.  It was the portrait of a young girl, by Mr. D. E. Gavit, of Albany, to whom the first premium of a silver medal has just been awarded at the late State Fair in Albany.  The great merit of this Daguerreotype lies in the general softness and harmony of the shadows, the unconstrained ease of the attitude, and the life-like animation of the face.  It may be seen for a few days at Mr. Anthony’s, 205 Broadway.  Mr. Gavit, we learn, intends shortly establishing himself in this city.

The daguerreotype business ought to be flourishing, by the handsome displays made by its practitioners.  In addition to Mr. D. E. Gavit’s mentioned yesterday, Messrs. Mead and Clark of this city, have both handsome collections of portraits.  Mr. D. D. T. Davis, of Utica, also exhibits a collection of Daguerreotypes, comprising some excellent likenesses of very distinguished persons and some beautiful portraits, [con] considered as works of art, of which the originals are unknown here.

The State Fair.—We were shown, yesterday, a specimen of daguerreotypes from the gallery of Mr. D. E. Gavit, of Albany, and the one which won the first prize of a silver medal, at the late State fair.  It was a perfect specimen of the art, and shows the great perfection to which that branch has been brought.  Mr. G. also received a diploma for the best selection of pictures, all of which he has left at the store of Mr. Anthony, in Broadway, for public inspection.

Fair of the American Institute…

Daguerreotypes.

Considerable space in the gallery is devoted to the exhibition of Daguerreotype pictures, as usual.  We have generally paid attention to the quality of the specimens, and, without wishing to disparage our city artists, we feel compelled to give the preference to Messrs. Roots’, of Philadelphia, and Mr. Gavitt’s, of Albany.  We last year paid a high compliment to the [skill] of Messrs. Roots, and we are pleased to notice, by a card, that they have opened a splendid gallery in this city, at No. 363 Broadway, corner of Franklin.  If any of our friends desire a perfect cemblance (sic.) of themselves, and a picture finished in the highest style of the art, we can assure them that they can obtain it at the above place.  Scientific American.

Holiday Articles….—Among the many pleasing articles which may be presented as Gifts for the Holidays, we know of none more pleasing or appropriate than daguerreotype likenesses.  A reference to our advertising columns will give the names of some of the best daguerreotypist in New York, where accurate likenesses may be obtained at a little more than a minutes sitting, and at a moderate cost.  Among these we may mention the following names:  Holmes, 259 Broadway, who receives an extensive public patronage; Gavit’s daguerrean gallery, where may be seen the portraits of several of the notabilities of this and other countries.  Accurate portraits may also be obtained at the daguerrean rooms over J. J. Cox’s store, 349, where every convenience and requisite necessary for the taking of perfect likenesses may be found.  In addition to the daguerreotypists above named, we would recommend Mr. Gurney’s gallery, 189 Broadway, which is the oldest establishment of the kind in the city.  Color types on Ivory, glass and paper, are also taken here at a short sitting.  The gallery, No. 363 Broadway, is well worthy of a visit from those desiring a superior article.  Here may be seen several portraits of Jenny Lind, and other celebrities of the day.  Mr. Root exhibits no less than six medals, as testimonials of his services in the art.

The Daguerreotype Art.—In this age of in the useful arts and in cheap luxuries, none who possess the means of subsistence can make the costliness of family portraits an excuse for being without them.  The art of Daguerreotyping, in this country, has reached a point of great perfection, and the artists of New-York are among the foremost in excellence of workmanship, beauty of finish, and a quick apprehension and application of a new discoveries.  The establishment of Mr. D. E. Gavit, corner of Broadway and Murray-st., to which we alluded a few days since, is one of the most extensive in this country, and combines a number of advantages, which give it a peculiar claim upon public attention.—Probably a larger or better selected Portrait Gallery of distinguished personages could not be found.  His rooms are decked with the speaking likenesses of Presidents, Governors, Congressmen, eminent Divines, Jurists, and other more or less distinguished—the careful gleanings of many years.  Joining to a large experience that spirit of enterprise that never fails to succeed, Mr. Gavit has been enabled, by his discoveries on new chemical compounds and combinations, to impart to his pictures a finish of remarkable beauty, which gives general satisfaction, and insures him frequent premiums.  In Albany, where his principal establishment was, until recently, located, he achieved a name which is a sure guarantee of success among us.  We commend his establishment, No. 247 Broadway, to the attention of the reader.

Daguerreotype Likenesses.  The Senate refused to purchase the Daguerreotypes of the Senators of the previous Senate.

Fire.—Yesterday, evening about half past six o’clock, a fire broke out in the fourth story of the large brick building on the corner of Broadway and Murray street, occupied by D. E. Gavitt as the National Daguerreotype gallery; the occupants of the building are as follows:–The first floor is occupied by Ball, Black, & Co., jewelers, and the basement by W. O. Stout, card and steal engraver.  The second story by M. Lafever, B. T. Smith, architects, and Thomas Jones, keeper of bookkeeping; the third by D. W. C. Boutel, artist, W. W. Niles, and a P. Begley; attorneys; Henry Reiley, Taylor & Van Skelien, manufacturer of artificial flowers; the fourth floor by D. E. Gavitt, daguerreotype gallery, by S. Ellis & H. Noland, sculptors.  The fire originated in the mercury room of Gavitt’s daguerreotype gallery; but from what caused he could not tell.  The flames spread with such rapidity that before the firemen could get fairly at work the rooms were completely burned out, and in consequence of the impossibility of getting the hose to operate with anything like effect, caused by the bursting of several of them, fears were, at one time, entertained that the whole building would fall a prey to the devouring element.  When, however, several powerful streams were ultimately brought to play on the flames, they were soon subdued, but not before the greater part of the fourth story was demolished.  D. E. Gavitt lost every thing, amounting to about $3,000 which was not insured.  This is the second time that he has had the misfortune of being burned out—the first time in Albany, some three or four years ago, and also without being insured…

Fires.—About 7 o’clock Saturday evening a fire broke out in the large four story brick building No. 247 Broadway, extending back over 150 feet on Murray-st, occupied by the following persons; Basement floor by Wm. C. Stout, card and seal engraver; first and second floors by Ball, Black & Co., jewelry and silverware manufacturers; third floor by W. W. Niles and S. Bagley, lawyers, Mr. Von Skelline, artificial flower maker, Henry Riley, tailor, Thomas Jones, teacher of penmanship, and M. Lafever and B. Smith, architects; fourth floor by D. E. Gavit, daguerreotypist, D. W. C. Boutelle, artist, and Horace Noland, sculptor.  The fire originated in Mr. Gavit’s daguerreotype establishment, and when first discovered could have been easily extinguished with a few pails of water.  Mr. G. was near by when the fire broke out, and discovering that it was in his premises ran quickly to the room, and had nearly succeeded in smothering the flames with his overcoat, when he was compelled to desist, being nearly suffocated by the dense smoke which had already filled the apartment.

The promptness with which the bell ringer gave the alarm, soon brought a large body of firemen upon the ground, who made their immediate action, succeeded in a short time completely subduing the devouring elements, which at first threatened the destruction of considerable property.

The rear portion of the fourth story occupied by Mr. Gavit, Horace Noland, and Boutelle the Artist, was entirely destroyed by fire, together with the property of the occupants, which is not insured.  The property of the occupants of the second and third story was damaged by water to the amount of several thousand dollars.

Mr. Gavit estimates his loss at about $3,000.  This loss falls heavily upon him, as the property destroyed was all he possessed, and he is not insured a dollar.  Some time since he met with a similar misfortune; his establishment in Albany having been destroyed, but there he was insured.  Mr. G. had a great number of pictures, of which about 600 were of distinguished Americans.  These were all destroyed, and as many of the originals are dead, they can never be replaced.  He saved only about a dozen pictures in all, besides two medals which had been awarded to him—one by the State Agricultural Society, and the other by the American Institute.  We trust to see Mr. G. at work again soon, when all his old friends should give him a lift….

New York, Feb. 15.—A fire broke out last night on the corner of Broadway and Murray street in a large building occupied by Messrs. Ball, Black & Co., Jewellers.—The upper story only was burnt which was occupied by D. Garritt, daguerreotypist, and by S. Cuss, whose damage was about $3000.  Much injury was done to Messrs. Ball, Black & Co., and the other occupants, by water, there was a large insurance, more than covering the loss.

Help Proposed.—We understand that the Daguerreotype Artists of this City contemplate raising a fund for the benefit of Mr. Gavit, Whose establishment was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday evening last.  We trust the craft will do something handsome for Mr. G., as the fire swept everything away, leaving him nothing but his naked hands with which to support a large family.  His policy of insurance expired a few days before the fire, and unfortunately he had neglected to renew it.  He is a good artist, and an energetic man, and with a little timely assistance, which shall enable him to recommence business, he will soon be on his feet again.

Fire In New York, &c.  New York, Geb. 15—9 P. M.  The building corner of Broadway and Murray street was discovered on fire in the fourte (sic.) story last evening, and that portion occupied as the National Daguerreotype Gallery, was almost consumed.  The first story was occupied by Messrs Ball, Black & Co., who sustained considerable damage to their stock which is valued at $250,000, and is fully insured.

The photographic art has had to pass through a fiery ordeal since our last, no less than four galleries have been wholly or partially destroyed by the devouring element.

The first was D. E. Gavit, 247 Broadway, which occurred early in March, destroying his whole stock.  The daguerrean art and the whole country suffered an irreparable loss by this occurrence, as Mr. Gavit’s gallery contained the largest, best and most valuable collection of daguerreotypes in the world.  Splendid portraits of some of our most remarkable men, and which can never be replaced, were consumed.  Mr. Gavit’s loss was total, as his policy of insurance expired only a day or two previous.

Mr. Gurney was the next to suffer—but we are happy to say received very little damage—and following close upon his disaster was that of Mr. Whitehurst, whose beautiful gallery in New York was nearly ruined by fire and water on Sunday morning March 28th.

The fourth and last case was that of Mr. Clark of Ithica, N. Y., who while in this city purchasing his spring stock received a telegraphic dispatch on the 29th ult. That his gallery had been burnt out.  The amount of this young but deserving artist’s loss we have not learned.

Prize Medal Daguerreotypes.—The first medal ever awarded for Daguerreotypes in this country was given to D. E. Gavit, 192 Broadway, corner of John street, the excellence of whose pictures is universally acknowledged, and whose prices are lower than any other good artist’s in the city.  This utmost satisfaction given in all cases.

Don’t Read This.  Mr. Bartholomew would respectfully announce to the citizens of Ithaca, that he has taken the room formerly occupied by Johnson & Schuyler, on Aurora St., for taking Daguerreotype Likenesses, Single or in groups up to 12 upon the latest Paris and London improvements, which does away with that blue, dark, inanimate, fading appearance to pictures; like ivory painting, with a Light, Soft, Florid Tone as in nature.  He finishes all his miniatures with the Electro Gilding, (and the enameled back ground if desired) which will last for ages without fading; and put them up in the most beautiful and splendid French style, never before introduced in this village.

Mr. B. would merely say to Parents and others that a guarantee of the life of friends and children has never been given, therefore secure these unfading likeness and your own when and how you can.  He invites all the ladies and gentlemen to call and see him, whether they desire to sit for portraits or not and judge for themselves if his rooms is not.

The Place to obtain true life like Miniatures.  Cloudy or rainy weather does not affect Mr. B.’s taking pictures, for he Has the control of the light according to its strength from sun rise to sun set.

Strangers can have their likenesses taken and put up in 15 to 20 minutes. Stock furnished to Operators.  Ithaca, April 7, 1849.

The Sky-Light!  A New Daguerrean Arrangement!  Mr. Bartholtrmew announces to the citizens of Ithaca and Tompkins co. that he has fitted up a set of Rooms expressly for Daguerreotyping, in a superior Style over Mr. Frost’s Saddle and Harness Emporium on Aurora-street, with a large Sky-Light—the only one within a 100 miles—the best ever constructed, being a combined liget from above and side, so arranged that perfect likenesses are taken rain or shine, in from 2 to 5 seconds, with a large German Quick Instrument, (a new invention) of superior power, producing a rich toned picture surpassing fine Mezzotint Engravings—not possible to be equaled when taken in the ordinary way by a side light only, and a common slow Camera.  Also a new constructed copying Instrument that will copy the smallest pictures to a half size, and the largest paintings, Engravings, &c., to the size of the smallest pea.  The preparation of the plates on which the Likeness is taken, is entirely done by machinery, producing a fine finish and Miniature, incomparably better than by the ordinary method.

Mr. B. respectfully solicits a call from every Lady and Gentleman in the county, whether they desire to sit for a portrait or not.

Strangers at any distance would be four-fold compensated by coming to Ithaca to Mr. B.’s rooms to have their likenesses taken, single or with their families in groups to any number.  He warrants all the miniatures he takes never to fade—his facilities for doing the best of work is not surpassed in this or any other country, from the fact that he has the best and only Sky and side light combined, the only Quick Instrument in the country (for taking Babies of any age) a fine copying, a full size and medium Camera.

G. Bartholomew’s Great Sky and Side Light Daguerrean Rooms, No. 96 Owego, opposite the new brick block.  This is the oldest and Largest Establishment in this county, and a single flight of stairs (not 2 or 3) of gentle ascent and only 10 feet rise lands you in his rooms—4 in number—1 expressly for ladies—which for size and convenience are well calculated for taking Superior Pictures of all Sizes.

A few things to be remembered by those wishing to have a Good Life-like Likenesses!  One that will never fade.  It is conceded by those acquainted with Mr. B.’s Daguerreotyping, that he is at the head of the profession in this region, having stood the test of competition of other operators for the last 4 years in the village of Ithaca, 15 having left for business in other places, and in the same time has taken from 6000 to 7000 Miniatures.

Such a practice is of itself a sufficient guarantee to a discriminating public, that his Rooms is the place to get good Likenesses.  But there are other reasons than those above:

1st—He galvanizes or re-silvers every plate on which the likeness in=s taken, before using it.

2d—The preparing of the same is done by machinery, producing a finer and making a finer miniature—incomparably better than the ordinary way.  Mr. B. is a member of the American Daguerrean Association, and is in possession of the New and Recent Improvements in that Association.  In addition to what we call the Daguerreotype proper, there are other processes that Mr. B. is prepared to execute, viz:  Gurney’s new process of coloring likenesses.  They are fine.  The Crystalotype—this is a beautiful style of Daguerreotype.  The Crayon, the Cameotype, and the enameled Back grounds and circles of a variety of colors, &c. and fancy and tasty acquisitions to the Art, and is very much admired.  He has one full sized Instrument, acromatic Lens, in goodness not surpassed—1½ size quick working Instrument for taking likenesses of babies, children & nervous people in from 2 to 5 seconds, the only one in this county—1 copying Instrument that copies all sized pictures perfectly—1 1-9 instrument expressly for taking Locket Pictures, a new thing—1 full size Sceptrum for taking views of Buildings and Landscapes at any distance within 2 miles, without reversing the object in the Picture taken.  Mr. B. respectfully informs Daguerrean Artist that he keeps on hand and for sale wholesale and Retail a complete assortment of Daguerreotype Goods, bought exclusively for cash, at the lowest New York Prices, and from a knowledge of the wants of the Artist, he is confident he can give good satisfaction in quality and price to all who may purchase of him.  All goods are warranted as represented, and advice on the practical part of Daguerreotyping, cheerfully given.

Likenesses of the Sick or Dead taken at their residences.  Remember the great Sky and Side light rooms No. 96 Owego street, Ithaca, where they take likenesses rain or shine, as low if not lower than at any other place.

High Wind—Alarm Of Fire—Accidents and Incidents.—A very severe westerly wind storm rose last evening, and prevailed without abatement until about 10½ o’clock this morning….Bartholomew’s handsome ambrotype and daguerreotype show case was prostrated, breaking the glass, and damaging the pictures considerably….

Randolph Palmer was recorded in three advertisements and two announcement in the Auburn Journal and Advertiser (Auburn, New York).  The first advertisement was recorded on January 6, 1841.  Portrait Painting.  R. Palmer would say to the Ladies and Gentlemen of Auburn and its vicinity, that he would be happy to wait upon them in the line of his profession, at his room, Chedell’s Buildings.

As to his ability as an artist, he would leave it with connoisseurs to decide.  His portraits are always ready for inspection: let them speak for themselves.  Call and examine them.  Auburn, February 18, 1840.

The first announcement appeared on January 20, 1841.  The Daguerreotype.  By reference to the advertisement of Mr. R. Palmer in other columns, our readers will notice that he has recently fitted up his establishment so as to enable him to take likenesses, by the new and curious system of Daguerreotype.  It was our intention to have given at this time a sort of bird’s eye view of the course adopted in carrying out the rules of this new discovery;—but we shall be compelled to defer it till our next. Such of our citizens as desire a perfect miniature, will do well to give Mr. P. a call at his “glass house,” east end of Exchange Buildings—and those who desire a Portrait, will there see specimens of his skill with the pencil and brush, as large, as natural, and apparently as animated as life itself.

The second advertisement ran from January 20 to March 24, 1841.  Portraits, Miniatures, And Photographic Likenesses in the Daguerreotype Process R. Palmer, has removed his studio to the east corner of Exchange Buildings, (directly over Mr. Haight’s Jewelry Store,) within the Glass House, where he will always be found ready, and happy, to wait upon all who may desire to hand down to posterity their Phiz upon canvass, Ivory, or Silver

He is perfectly willing to be criticized upon his own productions, but thinks it unfair for critics to find fault with the Pictures which Nature paints.

The Daguerreotype paints along with the colors which the sun produces, by reflecting light upon the sitter,—the sitting for the Daguerreotype vary from 3 to 8 minutes, according to light.  The best time for taking likenesses is in a clear day from 8 A. M., to 3 P. M.—It is not necessary to have the sun shine upon the sitter.

The second announcement appeared on February 10, 1841.  Daguerreotypes.  Likenesses of this description are now taken with the greatest accuracy by Mr. Palmer, at his “glass house” at the east end of the Exchange Buildings.

“The pictures as pictures (says the N. Y. Courier, in speaking of Daguerreotypes) are superior to any other specimens of the art that we have seen, and as likenesses of the originals, there is no sort of mistake.  No one who would be flattered need sit, but the man or woman who seek a similitude of their own face and features, as exact as it is in the mirror into which they look, had better apply here.  It is not a resemblance but an absolute identity of look and appearance, that is the result.”

Mr. P. has also recently succeeded in taking by the above power some beautiful landscape views.

The third advertisement appeared on March 31, 1841.  Portrait Painting.  R. Palmer has removed his room to 89 (Beach’s Block) Genesee st., where he will be happy to attend to all business in the line of his profession.—As to his ability as an artist, he would leave it with connoisseurs to decide.  His portraits are always ready for inspection: let them speak for themselves.

Randolph Palmer is not recorded in other photographic directories.  He is recorded in The New-York Historical Society’s Dictionary Of Artists In America 1584-1860 as a portrait painter working in Auburn, New York from 1839 to 1843 and also working in Albany and Seneca Falls.

Charles Morris was recorded in two announcements in the Penn Yan Democrat (Penn-Yan, New York).  The first appeared on April 2, 1856.  Hung.—John Fitzgerald, the youth recently sentenced by Judge Welles, at Auburn, was hung in the Jail at this place at 5 minutes past 3 P. M., on Friday Last…Mr. Charles Morris, of this place took several Ambrotypes of the condemned boy on the morning of his execution, one or two of which he now has in his possession.  He is a remarkably good looking fellow; the countenance, as seen in the picture, evince no sign of the murderous and reckless disposition that his deed and actions showed him possessed of.  We shall probably give a short account of his execution next week.

The second announcement appeared on April 9, 1856.  From the Auburn Daily Advertiser, of March 28th.  Execution of John Fitzgerald—A Hardened Criminal….Yesterday he sat for his Daguerreotype….The Daguerreotype was taken by Charles Morris, of Penn Yan….

Charles Morris is possibly listed in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry as Charles Y. Morris active in Auburn from 1856-1860.

J. M. Green was recorded in an announcement on March 5, 1858 in the Geneva Daily Gazette  (Geneva, New York).  The students of Hobart College lately conceived the idea of securing photograph likenesses of their eminent and revered Professors and fellow classmates.  To that end they have employed Mr. J. M. Green recently of Auburn, a gentleman highly skilled in the Photographic Art.  This will give him abundant occupation for a time, for the engagement, we understand, is to execute some 500 likenesses.  While Mr. Green is with us, many of our fellow citizens will doubtless avail themselves of the opportunity to secure pictures in the best style of the art.

Zenas Gage, Jr. was recorded in an advertisement that ran from August 17 to 31, 1842 in the Auburn Journal and Advertiser (Auburn, New York).  Photography.  Mr. Zenas Gage, Jr., Pupil of John Plumbe, Prof. Photography, in the U. S. Photographic Institute, Boston, respectfully announces to the ladies and gentlemen of Auburn, that he has taken rooms in Exchange Buildings over No. 74½, where he will furnish those who feel desirous, with beautiful and correct Daguerreotype Likenesses, taken with a costly and perfect instrument, at an ordinary window in about 30 seconds, without the direct rays of the sun.

He will also teach others the art, and furnish them with apparatus as cheap as they can buy in Boston, New York, or elsewhere.  All are cordially invited to call and examine specimens.

Mr. Becker

Mr. Becker is recorded twice in the Auburn Journal and Advertiser (Auburn, New York) first on September 3, 1845.

We are requested to say that Mr. Becker, of New York, is prepared to take Daguerreotypes likenesses, on an improved plan, and superior to anything yet seen in this section, at Doct. Munson’s Dentist Rooms, directly opposite Western Exchange.

He is recorded a second time in an advertisement for E. P. Senter on December 17, 1845,

…Mr. Becker, so favorably known for the correctness and beauty of his likenesses of many of our townsmen, taken during a short sojourn here a few weeks since, has returned and associated himself with Mr. Senter: and the two combined offer advantages which should be appreciated by our citizens.

Mr. Becker does not appear in other photographic directories as being in Auburn.  Craig’s Daguerreian Registry list an J. F. Becker as being in Syracuse in 1845.  The distance between Syracuse and Auburn, New York is about 25 to 35 miles.  It is possible that they are the same person but at this time no proof has been established.
