Elizabeth D. Mahan

Elizabeth D. Mahan was recorded in the Photographic and fine Arts Journal (New York, New York) on April 1, 1856.  In an article entitled the Photographic Galleries of America.  Number Two, Philadelphia. The author visited 57 Galleries in Philadelphia.  Miss. Mahan, Market Street. Twenty-five cent daguerreotypes. We grant the lady every compliment of the art, and hope she will be able to raise her prices.

Mahan & Good

Mahan & Good (Thomas J. Mahan & Jonathan J. Good) were recorded in the Photographic and fine Arts Journal (New York, New York) on April 1, 1856.  In an article entitled the Photographic Galleries of America.  Number Two, Philadelphia. The author visited 57 Galleries in Philadelphia.  Mahan & Good. — Pretty fair pictures, some excellent oil colored daguerreotypes. The pictures however are no wise remarkable for beauty.

William Magoffin

1850                105 State Street, opposite Walker’s, Schenectady, New York.

William Magoffin was recorded in an advertisement that ran from August 30 to September 13, 1850 in The Schenectady Reflector (Schenectady, New York).  Wm. Magoffin’s Daguerrean Gallery, 105 State street, Schenectady, (opposite Walker’s.)—The undersigned would respectfully inform his friends and the public generally, that he has taken the rooms recently occupied by W. L. Lansing[1], where he will be prepared to wait upon those who may favor him with their patronage.

Those wishing good pictures, are requested to call at my rooms, which are fitted up with a magnificent Sky-Light capable of taking pictures in from two to four seconds.  Perfect satisfaction given, or no charge made.  William Magoffin.

N. B.—Persons wishing pictures taken of children, are requested to bring them in the morning.

Magill

1846                Address Unknown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Magill was mentioned in an advertisement that ran from October 15 to 29, 1846  in the Green-Mountain Freeman (Montpelier, Vermont).  Daguerreotypes.  Now Is Your Time.  Messrs. Harner & Tileston (Recently from Van Loan & Magill’s celebrated establishment, Philadelphia,) respectfully announce that they will remain at the Union House during the session of the legislature and will furnish likenesses (either separately or in groups,) in a style, which in point of richness of tone, and beauty of finish stand unrivalled and cannot fail of giving satisfaction.

They would particularly solicit the attention of members of the Legislature and strangers visiting Montpelier, as they are fully prepared to give all an opportunity of securing a perfect Daguerreotype likeness on the most favorable terms.  Just call and examine specimens, and see if we don’t perform all we advertise.  J. C. R. Macy

1846                Rooms at F. Scofield’s Inn, Brandon, Vermont.

C. R. Macy was recorded in an advertisement that ran from August 6 to 13, 1846 in The Voice of Freedom (Brandon, Vermont). C. R. Macy, Photographer, would respectfully inform the citizens of this place and vicinity, that he will take Likenesses By The Daguerreotype Process, in a style and finish unsurpassed. His Miniatures possess all the colors of life, and are warranted durable, as well as well as being perfect copies from nature and art.  Specimens may be seen at his room, at F. Scofield’s Inn, where he will remain a few days to furnish all those who may favor him with their patronage, at the reduced price of one dollar fifty cents each.  Ladies and Gentlemen are invited to call and examine for themselves.       Operations in all weather, from 8 A. M., until 4, P. M.

Mr. Mackleme

Mr. Mackleme was recorded in one advertisement that ran from September 23 to October 7, 1859 in The Bossier Banner (Bellevue, Bossier Parish, Louisiana).  Ambrotypes!  Mr. Mackleme, would respectfully inform the citizens of Rocky Mount, and vicinity, that he is now prepared to take Ambrotypes, Photographs, and Melanotypes, in all sizes; and put up in all kinds of cases, rings, lockets, &c. satisfaction guaranteed or no pay.  Give him a call.

Miss. Margaret M. MacFarlane

Miss. Margaret M. MacFarlane was recorded in the Boston City Directory and two advertising cards.   Ca. 1858-1860  9th plate advertising card in the back of an ambrotype in my collection.  Miss. M. MacFarlane Operator at the Ambrotype Rooms, 268 Washington St., Boston.  (Up Only One Flight .)  Pictures taken in all weather; and all warranted.  Prices from 25 Cents to $20.  Likenesses set in Lockets, Pins, and Fancy Cases.  Copying neatly and carefully executed.  Sick & Deceased Persons taken at their residence.  Miss MacFarlane has long been an operator in these rooms.

Miss. Margaret M. MacFarlane is recorded in other photographic directories as being active in Boston in 1859 without a business address.

 

Mr. Macey

1845                Rooms over the Dayton Hat and Shoe Store, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mr. Macey was recorded in an announcement in the Indiana State Sentinel (Indianapolis, Indiana) on December 4, 1845.  Daguerrian Miniatures.  There are three persons engaged at present in this city, in taking photographic miniatures; and all of them, we believe, are excellent artists.  We have already spoken of Mr. Kever.  We now desire to commend to the public attention Mr. Macey, whose room is over the Dayton Hat and Shoe Store.  Mr. M. deserves patronage on several accounts.  In the first place, he is a first rate artist, and secondly, he is unfortunate by reason of an accident, which has almost entirely deprived him of the use of an arm.  His gentlemanly demeanor is sure to win the approbation of all with whom he may become acquainted.  We hope the ladies as well as gentlemen, will give him a call.

B. H. Mace

1847                Batchelder’s Brick Block, up stairs, Church Street, directly opposite Kern’s                                    Store, Burlington, Vermont.

B. H. Mace was recorded in three advertisements in the Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont). The first advertisement ran from July 2 to September 10, 1847. Daguerrean Gallery!  Batchelder’s Brick Block, up stairs, Church Street, directly opposite Kern’s Store.  B. H. Mace Has The Pleasure of Announcing to the citizens of Burlington, that he has made a permanent establishment in this place, where he is practicing the Daguerreotype art in the highest style of perfection.  For this purpose and for the reception of visitors, he has been to much labor and great expense in furnishing his rooms.  Having practiced the art for a great length of time, and availed himself of all the late improvements, he feels confident that he can give universal satisfaction to all who may favor him with their patronage.  Miniatures taken any weather, with or without colors, in a superior style, and neatly set in Lockets, Pins, Rings, Bracelets, Cases, Frames, or in from 4 to 12 Plate Family Cards, sunk in splendid Mahogany and Rosewood frames.  The Public are respectfully invited to call and examine specimens.  Perfect satisfaction given in all cases or no charge.  Instructions given in the art for $50, embracing all the chemical manipulations pertaining thereto, and every principle explained and illustrated by experiments from the first discoveries of M. Daguerre of France, down to the latest Heliographic Drawings of Germany, and success guaranteed.

To Artist he would give notice that he has on hand German and American Cameras of all sizes, a large and beautiful assortment of Gold plated Lockets, Plates, Cases, Frames, Chemicals, Polishing materials, &c., for sale at wholesale and retail, at the lowest cash prices. B. H. Mace, Burlington June 25, 1847.

The second advertisement ran from September 10 to 24, 1847.  B. H. Mace’s Daguerrean Gallery, over Batchelder’s Shoe Store, Church street, Burlington, Vermont.  Miniatures $1.50 only.

The third advertisement ran from October 1 to 15, 1847.  B. H. Mace’s Daguerrean Gallery!  Batchelder’s Brick Block up Stairs, Church street, directly opposite Kern’s Store.  By a new chemical combination, he is enabled to produce perfect Likenesses, at five seconds sitting, which will not effect the weakest eyes, nor give time for the expression of the countenance to change.

Ladies and gentlemen are invited to call and examine specimens.

G. S. Mabbett

1852                Rooms on board their boat near Bissell’s Hotel, Plaquemine,                                                                Louisiana.

G. S. Mabbett was recorded in an announcement and one advertisement. The announcement ran on August 14, 1852 in the Southern Sentinel (Plaquemine, Louisiana). Mr. Mabbett’s Daguerreotypes.—This gentleman is still here, ready to accommodate all who will favor him with their patronage.  His boat, which is fitted up in fine style for this business, lies opposite the residence of Mrs. Haase.

The advertisement was recorded on August 14, 1852.  Daguerreotypes.  The undersigned would respectfully inform the citizens of Plaquemine, and Parish of Iberville, that they are at present prepared (on board of their boat, laying a short distance below Bissell’s Hotel) to take Daguerreotypes of the most superior kind, and of every description, and at the lowest rates.

Their boat has been fitted up expressly for this business, and Ladies and Gentlemen of the vicinity are respectfully invited to pay them a visit.

Their Frames and Lockets as well as the Daguerreotype apparatus, are of the most superior quality, and those who may extend them their patronage, may feel confident of not being disappointed.  aug7.  G. S. Mabbett & Co.
