George H. H. Silsby

1857                115 Main Street, opposite the Depot, Concord, New Hampshire.

George H. H. Silsby appeared in two advertisement.  The first advertisement which appeared on March 30, 1840 in the New Hampshire Patriot and State Gazette (Concord, New Hampshire) and is included to establish his first name.  Hereafter their first names do not appear in the advertisements I have looked at.   Co-Partnership Notice.  The subscriber have formed a connection in business under the firm of Stearns, Morrills & Silsby, for the purpose of Publishing, Binding and Bookselling, and have taken the room I the 2nd story of Low’s Block formerly occupied by L. B. & L. M. Morrill, where they may be found at all times to answer to orders in their line of business.  Chas. H. Stearns, L. B. Morrill, L. M. Morrill, Geo. H. H. Silsby.  Concord, March 1, 1840.

The second advertisement ran from January 1 to July 30, 1857 in the Independent Democrat (Concord, New Hampshire).  To Daguerreotypist.  The subscribers have on hand and for sale a supply of materials for the use of Daguerrian Artists, consisting of Cases, Plates, Mats, Preservers, Rotten Stone, &c., &c.

They intend to keep a full supply of the above articles on hand, which will be sold as low, at least, as can be purchased in Boston.  Orders, by mail or otherwise, solicited.  Morrill & Silsby, 115 Main St., opposite the Depot.

George H. H. Silsby does not appear in other photographic directories and continues to publish advertisements starting in 1841 as Morrill & Silsby as publishers and bookbinders. 

William Senter

William Senter of the firm Lowell & Senter were recorded in one advertisement and one announcement.  The advertisement appeared on January 5, 1858 in the Christian Mirror (Portland, Maine).  Lowell & Senter, Watch Makers, And Dealers In Watches, Chronometers, Jewelry, Charts, Nautical Instruments, And Fancy Goods.  64 Exchange Street…Portland.  Abner Lowell, William Senter.

The announcement appeared on October 26, 1858 in the Portland Weekly Advertiser (Portland, Maine).  The County Cattle Show At Standish.  Awards…Miscellaneous…

Messrs. Lowell & Senter, Portland, for their “Stereoscope” with its interesting views, diploma. 

William Senter is not recorded in other photographic directories.  Lowell & Senter may not have been photographers in fact new research has found advertisements that list them as Jewelers.

Samuel E. Moore

1858                49 Camp Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Samuel E. Moore was recorded in one announcement and one advertisement in the Times-Picayune (New Orleans, Louisiana).  The announcement appeared on November 6, 1858. 

Stereoscopic.—One of the pleasantest, cheapest and most easily obtainable amusements for a family circle is a set of stereoscopic views.  They are beautiful specimens of the optician’s and daguerreotypist’s skill and taste, and afford never-wearying variety. 

Messrs. S. E. Moore & Co., 49 Camp street, have just received a fine assortment of these views which are more particularly described in their card elsewhere.

The advertisement first appeared on November 6, 1858.  Stereoscopic Views.  We have just received a fine assortment of these most elegant and instructive Parlor Ornaments, comprising of

Views of Domestic Life, &c., &c., &c.

Theodore Lessey were recorded in two advertisements in The New York Herald (New York, New York).  The first advertisement appeared on September 3, 1859.  America In The Stereoscope.  A series of American Scenery, Photographed And Published By The London Stereoscopic Company.  Theodore Lessey, 534 Broadway, Manager of the United States Depot.

The second appeared on September 5, 1859.  American Scenery.—The London Stereoscopic Company.  The finest views of American Scenery are those photographed and published by the London Stereoscopic Company, who supply their depot in New York by every steamer with all kinds of stereoscopic groups and views, plain, colored and illuminated.  Stereoscopes of every variety, and at prices ranging from 50c. upwards.  Manager, Theo.  Lessey, 534 Broadway, New York.

Hawks & Brother were recorded in one advertisement that appeared on April 1, 1859 in the Cleveland Morning Leader (Cleveland, Ohio).  Hawks & Brother have received and have for sale a large number of fine photographs of landscapes, buildings, etc., in various sections of the country, which will make fine ornaments and decorations for the residences of those who purchase.  The views include many in New York, (City and State,) and other States.  Call and look over the collection.

John T. Billings was recorded in one advertisement that ran from January 3 to May 6, 1857 in the   Lowell Daily Citizen and News (Lowell, Massachusetts).  Daguerreotypists:—A lot of good American and German Bromine received and for sale by John T. Billings, Apothecary, cor. Central and Jackson Streets.  jan3.

Beckel Brothers

1858-1859       19 John Street, New York, New York.

Beckel Brothers (Joseph & Lewis) were recorded in four advertisements, one in the New York Daily Tribune, and three in The New York Herald.  The first advertisement appeared in the New York Daily Tribune (New York, New York) on  March 2, 1859.  Stereoscopes and Stereoscopic Views.  Beckel Brothers, No. 19 John-st., Manufacture Stereoscopes and Import the Latest Views taken on glass and paper of all parts of the world.

The second advertisement appeared on April 25, 1859 in The New York Herald (New York, New York).  Stereoscopes and Stereoscopic Views.  Beckel Brothers, 19 John street, keep the largest assortment of glass views.  Also Elliot’s and Sylvester’s colored and illuminated groups and paper views.

The third advertisement appeared on May 22, 1859.  Stereoscopes and Stereoscopic Views.—Beckel & Brothers, No. 19 John street, keep the largest assortment of glass views.  Also Elliot’s and Sylvester’s colored and illuminated groups and paper views.

The fourth advertisement appeared on November 10, 1859. A Great Reduction of Prices in Stereoscopic Goods at Beckel Brothers, 19 John street.

Beckel Brothers are recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry under Beckel as being active in Lockport, New York as apparently stereo photographers prior to 1858.  While in New York City they are retailers selling stereoviews.  Joseph Beckel first appears in the New York City directory in 1852 as an Optician at 355 Broadway, from 1853-1855 Joseph is listed as [imp or lmp?] at 19 John.  From 1856-1859 Beckel Brothers (Joseph & Lewis) are listed from (1856-1857) as [imp or lmp?] in 1858-1859 as spectacles at 19 John.

H. Baumgardner

H. Baumgardner appeared in two advertisements on September 4, 1856 in the Holmes County Republican (Millersburg, Ohio).  J. H. Baumgardner & Co., Wooster, O., Wholesale And Retail Dealers in Drugs, Books, Groceries, Daguerreotype & Ambrotype Stock, Wood And Willow Ware, Fancy Goods, and Everything else.  Also Book Binders, And Manufacturers of Melodeons, Gilt Frames, &c.  Wooster, Sept. 1, 1856.

The second advertisement also appeared on September 4, 1856.  Daguerreian & Ambrotype Materials—Including Instruments, Apparatus, Cases Chemicals, and everything used by Artists, will be found at the Column Building.  Our stock is as large as any in the State, and prices will average lower.—Orders are respectfully solicited, and satisfaction warranted.  Terms cash.  J. Armstrong Informs the residents of Peekskill and vicinity that at her rooms may be found every style of Stereoscopes, With superior plates and designs by French, English and American Artists, which are offered for sale at prices lower than they can be obtained outside of New York City.  Call and See!!  Peekskill, June 7, 1859.
