Henry N. Eastman

Henry N. Eastman was recorded in two advertisements, the first advertisement ran from June 16 to December 29, 1859 in the East Saginaw Courier (East Saginaw, Michigan).  Ambrotypes.  Eastman, Having Fitted Up Rooms over Sanborn & Tucker’s Provision Store, is now prepared to take Ambrotypes in superior style, and put them up in beautiful cases just received by Express.  Good pictures taken as low as Fifty Cents.

The second advertisement ran from August 4 to November 3, 1859  in the East Saginaw Courier (East Saginaw, Michigan).  The World Still Moves!!  Notwithstanding The Earth Continues to perform its diurnal revolutions round the Sun it is nevertheless true, that Eastman still retains his position among the lesser planets of this continental hemisphere, and can daily be seen with the naked eye, and his Ambrotype Gallery, over Sanborn & Tucker’ Store’s.

Pictures Taken in any kind of weather, and satisfaction guaranteed.  Those who desire an Ambrotype, Melainotype or any of the new styles, of pictures which are taken as natural as life, and far better looking than the original, will find it greatly to their interest to call at the Rooms of H. N. Eastman.  His Prices are extremely moderate.  Of those, for whom, you fond emotions cherish, Secure the Shadow, ere the substance perish.

Dr. D. D. Dutton

Dr. D. D. Dutton was recorded in seven announcements in the Indiana American (Brookville, Indiana).  The first announcement appeared on March 3, 1854.  The people of Fairfield, and vicinity who have pretty faces would do well to give Dr. Dutton a call, who will spend two weeks there with his shadow catcher.  He takes pretty pictures from pretty faces, but the apparatus for taking pretty faces from ugly faces has not yet arrived.

The second announcement appeared on March 31, 1854.  Fairfield, Ind….We found Dr. Dutton on the second story, and we heard out side that the Dr. is likely to prove some remarks we made about him a few weeks ago, not exactly true, for they say he has made some powerful pretty pictures out of rather common material.

The third announcement appeared on October 13, 1854.  List Of Premiums Awarded At The Third Annual Fair Of The Franklin County Agricultural Society, Held in Brookville, In September Last…Class XVI—Unnumbered Articles….Dr. D. D. Dutton, Box of Daguerreotypes  $1.00.

The fourth announcement appeared on November 9, 1855.              Admittance Free.—Dr. Dutton charges nothing for admittance into his show wagon that graces the front of our office.  He only charges for the pictures he takes.

The fifth announcement appeared on March 14, 1856.  Ambrotyping.—Dr. Dutton [has] qualified himself for catching the pictures of good looking people according to the latest style, called Ambrotyping, which is said to be, in every respect, superior to the old fashion.  He will be found in his “Car,” west end of the Market House, for some four of five weeks, then he will start his Car to accommodate other people.

The sixth announcement appeared on April 18, 1856.  Persons who want a picture had better be in something of a hurry, as Dr. Dutton intends leaving soon.  He has just received some new material.

The seventh announcement appeared on May 2, 1856.  Dr. Dutton expects to move his picture car next Monday.  He will spend three days next week near Samuel Logan’s, and then go to Metamora in quest of Pretty People.  If you want pictures, call this week.

S. N. Duncan is not recorded in A Directory of Massachusetts Photographers, 1839-1900 or other photographic directories. Steven Lucas is recorded in other photographic directories.

J. W. Duke

1857                Rooms over Lindsay and Gordon’s Store, Yorkville, South Carolina,

J. W. Duke was recorded in an advertisement that ran from September 17 to October 8, 1857 In the Yorkville Enquirer (Yorkville, South Carolina).    Ambrotypes and Melainotypes.—J. W. Duke would respectfully inform the citizens of Yorkville and the surrounding country that his Gallery, over Lindsay and Gordon’s Store, will be open for the reception of visitors from this date.  Pictures taken for One Dollar, warranted to please.  Give him a call.

J. W. Duke is listed in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry in 1857 in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The distance between the two towns Hillsborough and Yorkville (now called York) is 166 miles. It’s possible they are the same person but at this point it is only speculation.

S. Downs was recorded in one advertisement and two announcements. The date of the advertisement is May 14, 1857 and recorded on December 10, 1857 in The Medina Tribune (Medina, New York).  Life-Like Ambrotypes.  S. Downs would respectfully inform his customers and the public that he has fitted up rooms for his business in the 3d loft of Parker’ block, directly over Parker’s Hat store, rooms for pleasantness and convenience is not excelled in Western New York.  All such as are desirous of obtaining life-like pictures may rest assured that they can do so by calling on him.  No one need take a picture from his room unless it gives perfect satisfaction.  Call and examine specimens, for you may be sure he exhibits none but his own work.  He is also prepared to give instructions in most of the arts pertaining to the business.

S. Downs is also agent for a number of reliable Fire Insurance companies. Medina, May 14, 1857.

The second announcement announcing the premiums awarded appeared on the same day September 22, 1859 in The Medina Tribune (Medina, New York).       Union Agricultural Society of Ridgeway And Shelby.  Second Annual Fair held at Medina, N. S. Downs was recorded in Craig Daguerreian Registry for 1859 in Medina & Ridgeway, New York.  F. H. Finch is not recorded in other photographic directories. E. R. Graves is listed in Craig.  Craig also has a listing for a G. P. Hopkins in Albion and Barre, New York in 1859.  Henry Pruden is also listed in Craig, but he spells his last name Prudden.

C. C. Douglas

C. C. Douglas was recorded in an advertisement that ran from December 11, 1858 to January 29, 1859 in The Corrector (Sag Harbor, New York).  Ambrotypes. The Subscriber would hereby give notice that he has taken the room formerly occupied by I. S. Van Scoy, and that during his absence he will continue to supply those who wish, with pictures of themselves or their friends, at prices as low as at any other establishment in the country.

A good assortment of Fancy Cases for pictures intended for Holiday Presents prices from 50 cents to $5.00.  C. C. Douglas.

C. C. Douglas is not listed in other photographic directories.  Craig’s Daguerreian Registry does list a C. Douglas in Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1859-1860 but it is unknown if they are the same person.

Dougherty & Crosby

Dougherty & Crosby were recorded two advertisements, the first advertisement ran from July 1 to 29, 1858 in the Belmont Chronicle (St. Clairsville, Ohio).  Pictures for 50 Cents.  Ambrotypes, Photographs, and all the various styles of pictures taken at Dougherty & Crosby’s Ambrotype Car, Corner of Main and Marietta Streets.  Persons wanting pictures will do well to call soon, as we will remain in town but a short time.

The second advertisement ran from January 27 to March 3, 1859 in the Belmont Chronicle (St. Clairsville, Ohio).  Back Again Dougherty & Crosby are in town again, with their Ambrotype Car.  They can be found on the Public Square, near the Court House.  Where they are prepared to execute all the various kinds of Pictures in a style of beauty.  Coloring, and durability unsurpassed.  And on the most reasonable terms.

Dougherty & Crosby are not recorded in other photographic directories.

Mr. Dewel

Mr. Dewel was recorded in an announcement on July 23, 1857 in the Lansingburgh Democrat (Lansingburgh, New York).  A Card.  Those who wish a good Ambrotype, would do well to call at Fitch’s Rooms.  Mr. Finch has made arrangements with Mr. Dewel formerly operator for Clark and Holmes to continue the business during his absence.

Mr. Dewel is not recorded in other photographic directories.  Craig’s Daguerreian Registry does list a T. Dewell in Albany in 1850-1851, but it would be pure speculation to suggest they were the same person.

E. W. Denison was recorded three times in the Westfield Republican (Westfield, New York). The first time was in an advertisement on March 30, 1859. Marble Hall Picture Gallery If You Want To Get A Good Picture Go To Marble Hall Picture Gallery Where pictures can be had surprisingly cheap and Strikingly Life Like.  I have on hand a full assortment of cases and Frames, and will engage to give my customers likenesses that will suit them.  I never shove off a poor likeness—preferring to lose a job rather than sell a bad picture.  Don’t forget the place—on Main Street, over D. Rockwell & Co.’s store.  Entrance between D. Rockwell & Co.’s and A. J. Schofield & Bro.’s.  Drop in and examine specimens.  E. W. Denison.  Westfield, March 29, 1859.

The second time was in an announcement on April 13, 1859. Ambrotypes For 25 cts.—Mr. Denison, who is a first rate artist, gives notice that he will put up in case likenesses for 25 cts.  Read his advertisement; and then go and avail yourselves of his liberality.

The third time was an advertisement on April 13, 1859.  Get Your Likenesses Taken and put up in a case. For 25 Cents At Denison’s Picture Gallery, over Rockwell & Co.’s. Store.

M. B. Czechowski was recorded in an advertisement that ran from June 19 to July 17, 1857 in The Hancock Jeffersonian (Findlay, Ohio). A Polish Exile. The undersigned has established himself in Findlay, for the purpose of engaging in the business of Book Binding as well as that of Ambrotype Artist.  He respectfully solicits the patronage of those who have anything in his line to do.  His place of Business, will be found at the extreme east end of Hardin street.  M.
