Mr. Joslin

1853                Address Unknown, Mohawk, New York.

Mr. Joslin was mentioned in an advertisement that ran from April 13 to May 11, 1853 in the Herkimer County Democrat (Frankfort, New York).  Daguerreotypes!!  The Car lately owned by Mr. Joslin having been purchased by the subscriber will remain in Mohawk for a few weeks.  The patronage of the public is respectfully solicited.   John V. William H. Jones

1851                Rooms in the Union House, Main Street, Port Jervis, New York.

William H. Jones was recorded in an advertisement ran from April 3 to July 3, 1851 in the Tri-State Union (Port Jervis, New York).  Daguerreotypes.  The Undersigned, having taken a room in the Union House, in this village, corner Main Street, nearly opposite the Post Office, offers his services to such citizens, as are desirous to obtain for themselves, or families, accurate and highly finished Daguerreotype Likenesses.  He has with him a number of specimens of the different styles in which his Likenesses are taken, and a few of persons resident here, which have been taken within the past three days.  When not at the Union House, he may be found at Cox’s Hotel.  William H. Jones.  February 20th.

William H. Jones is not recorded in other photographic directories as being active in Port Jervis, New York in 1851.  Note the date at the end of the advertisement (February 20.) The first issue available to me was April 3, 1851.  Craig’s Daguerreian Registry does list a William H. Jones as being active in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1856 but it would be speculation to suggest that they were the same person.

Wainwright Jones

1849-1850       265 Washington Street, Boston, Massachusetts.

Wainwright Jones was Recorded in four announcements and one advertisements in the Boston Daily Evening Transcript (Boston, Massachusetts).  The advertisement ran from August 14, 1849 to April 16, 1850.  Persons desirous of Daguerreotype Likenesses of themselves or friends, taken in a superior style, will do well to call at W. Jones’s Rooms, 265 Washington street, Corner of Winter.

The first announcement appeared on September 4, 1849.  Daguerreotypes.  For the information of the public we would state that excellent likenesses are taken at the gallery of Mr. W, Jones, 265 Washington street, corner Winter.  Persons desiring single figures, groups, or other pictures, would do well to call.  We have a specimen of his work before us that is excellent.

The second announcement appeared on October 20, 1849.  Daguerreotypes.  Excellent specimens in this beautiful art are taken by Mr. Jones, at his gallery at the corner of Washington and Winter streets, and at very low prices too, put up in elegant cases, which are an ornament to the centre table.  Give him a call.

The third announcement appeared on September 4, 1849.  Christmas Presents…For Superior daguerreotypes to Whipple; to Southworth & Hawes; to Davis; to Jones; to Chase and some few others…

The fourth announcement appeared on January 14, 1850.  Daguerreotypes, are taken at a very low price at Jones’s Gallery 265 Washington street.  If not good likenesses no pay is required.

Wainwright Jones is recorded in other photographic directories, but is included here to clarify the record.

S. D. Jones

1856                Address Unknown, New York, New York.[1]

S. D. Jones was recorded on January 1, 1856 in the Photographic and fine Arts Journal (New York, New York). In an article entitled the Photographic Galleries of America. Number One, New York. The author visited 69 Galleries in New York City.

S. D. Jones — Many of the daguerreotypes are deserving of great praise. Others again the contrary.

S. D. Jones does not appear in other photographic directories.

Nathaniel W. Jones

1849                Address Unknown, New York, New York.

Nathaniel W. Jones was recorded in one announcement that appeared on May 17, 1848 in the New York Herald (New York, New York).  Court of General Sessions.  Before the Recorder, and Aldermen Hatfield and Britton….Trial for Grand Larceny.—George W. Butler was put upon trial, charged with grand larceny, in having, on or about the 20th of December last, stolen a number of articles belonging to a daguerreotype apparatus, the property of Nathaniel W. Jones, and worth over $100.  The prosecution fell through, as it was shown that the articles were entrusted to the defendant, by Mr. Jones, who authorized Butler to sell them for him.  The prisoner was, therefore, pronounced not guilty, and discharged from custody.

J. P. Jones

1848                Rooms at the Washington Hotel, Joliet, Illinois.                                                                1848                Address Unknown, Wilmington, Illinois.

J. P. Jones was recorded in two announcements in the Juliet Signal (Joliet, Illinois). The first appeared on March 28, 1848. J. P. Jones, Daguerreotypist, has opened rooms at the Washington Hotel, in this place, where he is prepared to take likenesses of all who may give him a call.  We have seen some specimens of his work which are the most delicate execution.  Those who desire to have their likenesses taken in a life like manner should avail themselves of the present opportunity.  He intends remaining in the place but a few days.

The second announcement appeared on April 4, 1848. Those wishing Daguerreotype likenesses of themselves or friends, had better call on Mr. Jones, at the Washington Hotel, soon, as he expects to leave in a few days.  He intends visiting Wilmington next week.

George H. Jones

1850                Rooms over William Hawkins’ Store, Hannibal, Missouri.

George H. Jones was recorded in an advertisement on  November 7, 1850 in the Western Union  (Hannibal, Missouri).  Daguerrean Gallery.  Over Wm. Hawkins’ Store.  Geo. H. Jones.  Would respectfully announce to the citizens of Hannibal and vicinity, that he will continue to execute all kinds of work in the Daguerrean Art in the latest improved style; miniatures set in beautiful shell or morocco cases; also in lockets, breast-pins, finger rings, watch keys, &c., &c.  Being convinced from past experience, that he can fully satisfy all who may encourage him, public patronage is solicited.—Entire satisfaction given, or no charge.

P. S. Instructions given in the Art, and an apparatus furnished on reasonable terms.

G. B. Jones was recorded in one announcement which appeared on  October 28, 1854 in The Daily Dispatch  (Richmond., Virginia).  Petersburg Fair.  Fourth Day.  Petersburg, Oct. 27, 1854…List of Premiums Awarded at the Union Fair of Virginia and North Carolina… Discretionary Premiums.—….$2, to G. B. Jones & Co., Petersburg; for specimens of daguerreotyping, $5 each, To Messrs. P. E. Gibbes of Lynchburg and White of Petersburg;

Eliza P. Jones

1856-1857       At the Residence of John Webb, Front Street, Perrysburg, Ohio.

Eliza P. Jones was recorded in an advertisement and an announcement in The Perrysburg Journal (Perrysburg, Ohio).  The advertisement ran from October 9, 1856 to October 29, 1857.  Daguerreotyping, Ambrotyping and Millinery, By Eliza P. Jones, at the residence of John Webb, Front street, Perrysburg, Ohio.

The announcement ran on May 14, 1857.  Miss. Eliza P. Jones keeps a good assortment of Millinery goods, which she proposes to sell at reasonable rates.  She is also prepared to make or renovate bonnets in good style and on reasonable terms.  Not only this, but she takes Ambrotype and Daguerreotype likenesses in the very best style of the art.

Jones & Stapleton

1856                Rooms over Lyman’s, Corner of Church and College streets, Burlington,                                          Vermont.

Jones & Stapleton (J. W. Jones) were recorded in an advertisement that ran from April 25 to August 29, 1856 in the Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont).  New Discovery.  Ambrotypes And Daguerreotypes By Jones & Stapleton.  Another place has been found in this county where Ambrotypes are taken of the first quality.  Our pictures are cemented between two French plate glasses with an imperishable gum, and warranted to resist the effects of any climate and most powerful acids.

Also Pictures on isinglass, the only kind of photograph well adapted for mailing; they are as durable as the Ambrotype and can be placed between the folds of a letter without increasing its weight.

As we are intending to make this place our permanent residence, our patrons will run no risk of being imposed on by inferior pictures as we shall hold ourselves in readiness to remedy any defect free of charge, which may be caused by fault of ours.

Daguerreotypes taken as usual.  We need not say they are the best that can be produced as all admit that they are the best they have seen.  Rooms over Lyman’s, Corner of Church and College streets.  Jones & Stapleton.
