We would invite attention to Mr. Amsden’s notice of his beautiful Pictures On Glass. In another column.  Mr. A. leaves tomorrow for Milford, and we would recommend those of our citizens who have not secured pictures to call on him during his stay there, and our friends in Milford and adjoining towns to do the same.  We have long known him as a first rate artist, and being one of the craft’, can cordially recommend him to patronage.  His stock and apparatus are of the first class, and his work beautifully finished, rendering his pictures well worth double the price of most country operators.  Those who want pictures that will give them decided satisfaction, should not allow so favorable an opportunity to pass unimproved.

Amsden’s Daguerreotype Saloon, Will be at Milford the last of this week, with something new.  Pictures Taken On Glass.

Mr. A. will stop a weeks, and respectfully solicits the attention of the inhabitants during the time he may remain.

Glass Pictures.  They are taken on Glass manufactured expressly for this purpose, and for richness, beauty, and durability they are unsurpassed.  They are so finished as to be seen in any light you please to hold them, and are not obliged to turn them as you have to a Daguerreotype, to see them, but they are distinctly in view at all times, and there is no possible chance for them to fade, or even change in the least.  Those wishing these new and beautiful style of Pictures, will please call as early as convenient, as his stay will beautiful a few weeks.  Please call and examine specimens, if you do not wish for pictures.  Over three thousand persons have visited this Saloon and not one but what liked the Glass Pictures!

Mr. A. will also take Daguerreotypes for those who wish.  He has been engaged in this business for the last twelve years, and can safely say his work is unequalled.  He would invite all who have not as yet secured their likeness, to call at his Saloon.  Do not put off on account of cloudy weather, for such is the best for a good Likeness.

Particular attention paid to taking sick or Diseased persons.

Family Groups, and Schools taken on reasonable terms.  Daguerreotypes, Portraits, and Engravings copied.

Instruction given in the art and apparatus furnished.

Amsden’s Daguerreotype Saloon has left and those who were not fortunate enough to accrue pictures, can call upon him at Milford.  The popularity of his pictures may be learned from the fact that in three weeks he furnished our citizens nearly three hundred.

Mr. Amsden Tenders his grateful acknowledgement to the citizens of Amherst, for their liberal patronage bestowed upon him during his short stop in that place—and invites those who have thus favored him, and others to visit him during his stay at Milford.

From the Woodstock Mercury.  Windsor County Agricultural Fair.  On Wednesday and Thursday, of last week, the annual fair, held in this village…the following premiums, awarded by the several committees, were declared:—

Miniatures By Daguerreotype.  J. Soule Would respectfully inform the public, that he has taken the rooms formerly occupied by Mr. A. G. Amsden, over the “New York Store,” Main Street, where he is prepared to take Miniatures in every variety of style; the quality of which all are requested to call and judge for themselves.  He would only say, that intending to make this a permanent location, no exertions or expense will be spared in rendering them equal to any.  Having availed himself of all the recent improvements in the Art, and being determined to use none but the best materials, together with his utmost endeavors to please, he hopes to merit a share of the public patronage.

All Miniatures taken at his rooms will be finished in the highest perfection of the Art.

Daguerreotype Saloon.  Ladies and Gentlemen of Windsor and vicinity, to you I have a word to say in relation to further prospects, and that is, I have a Daguerreotype Saloon now building at the Car Manufactory of Messrs. Robbins & Lawrence, which will be one of the largest and most convenient Saloons in the United States, furnished with one of the largest and best Ground Glass Sky-Lights in the country, to be completed in about two or three weeks, and located in some convenient spot in this place.

Those wishing to procure superb  Likenesses of themselves or friends, can do so by the Ground Glass Sky Light, (with the assistance of your humble servant,) which is superior to any light in the city.  Perhaps you may say this is saying too much about your Ground Glass Sky-Light, but I am inclind to believe that I can convince you of the fact, when the saloon is in operation. Amsden’s Daguerreotype Saloon, Opposite The Windsor House, Windsor, Vermont.  Ladies and Gentlemen,  I would respectfully call your attention to my new Daguerreotype Saloon,—It is arranged with one of the largest and best Ground Glass Sky-Lights in the United States, and is a beautiful specimen of workmanship.  Any person will be well paid if they should go ten or fifteen miles to see the Saloon if they do not want a likeness, but if they do, it is decidedly the place to get one, because the arrangements for taking beautiful Daguerreotypes are unsurpassed.  Many people have seen my former work, which is equal with that of other Artists; but now I am prepared to execute better Likenesses than I have previously done.  Miniatures set in Gold Lockets, Cases, Frames, &c., in the best and most approved style.  I have one of the best German Instruments in the Art, and if you wish for a Likeness come and see me,—if you do not, give me a call,—I shall be very happy to see you.

On Sunday morning last, between two and three o’clock, Amsden’s Daguerreotype Saloon in this village was discovered to be on fire.  It was soon entirely destroyed, with nearly all its contents.  Loss estimated at about 1200 dollars.  Insured at the Windsor Co. Mutual for $800.  Origin of the fire unknown.

Daguerreotype Likenesses.—An excellent opportunity is now presented to all who desire to obtain correct and finished pictures of themselves or their friends.  By our advertising columns it will be observed that Mr. C. Allen has again returned to his post, and will be happy to catch a life-like shadow of every one, who may wish his professional services in that line.  Mr. Allen has experience, taste and every facility for securing a finished and life-like picture.

It will also be observed that Messrs. Dannison Cone & Co., have taken apartments over the store of Messrs. Bingham & Stevens, and invite the public to give them a call.  We stepped in a day or two since, and found some most beautiful specimens of their art lying upon the table.  In the show case we observed various, ad admirably executed pictures, some of whom were Claremont friends.  Many persons are under the impression, that a more correct and finished picture can be obtained in the city than in the country.  This is a mistake.  With a good apparatus, the advantages are all on the side of the country.  The atmosphere is clearer, the light is better, and far more perfect pictures can be obtained.  Any city artist will acknowledge this.

The ide to Charlestown.  Every body knows, that on Tuesday last a large company of our citizens took a sleigh-ride to Charlestown, and had a highly social and merry time…Just while this state of things continued, we observed our friend Allen, near the town house, with his daguerreotype apparatus, endeavoring to catch a life-like picture of the scene, and immortalize, the occasion, so far as his valuable art might enable him so to do.  Whether he succeeded we do not know…

Daguerreotypes.—We Have now three places in this village where those in want of them can obtain good pictures of themselves or friends.  Mr. Allen, the old stand-by, over the Eagle office, is still “at home” to all his customers, and happy to serve them.  Mr. Tapley, in Farwell’s New Block, is always on hand when a picture is wanted.  Mr. Miner, with his saloon, has come to town again, and may be found on the Common, ready to receive his friends and customers and serve them, to their satisfaction.  All the above gentlemen are excellent operators, but which of them is the Best, we leave for the public to decide.  They all speak for themselves in our advertising columns.

Removal!  The subscriber respectfully invites the attention of the citizens of Claremont, and the public generally to his New Daguerrean Gallery! In Brown’s Block!

The rooms are easy of access, spacious, convenient and pleasant.  The Operating Light Is large, and constructed upon the most approved plan.  His Apparatus Is New, Perfect, And Of The Best Quality, And his rooms are furnished throughout with all necessary fixtures and conveniences for the expedition and skilful practice of his art as well as for the convenience and comfort of his customers.  Having been a Permanent Operator In this place for some years, he flatters himself that he has earned the confidence of the community, and that he sha;; merit and continue to receive a liberal share of public patronage.

Pictures taken in singly or in groups, large or small size, and equally as well in cloudy as in clear weather.

He would also say that while he keeps constantly posted up in all the Practical Improvements In the art, he has no confidence in any “improved day-light,” “patent refined sunshine,” or “gas.”  Charles Allen.

Daguerreotypes.—It is always a pleasure to us to commend the skill of our own citizens.  And here let us say that we have lately seen some of the best Daguerreotypes from the rooms of Mr. C. Allen, in Brown’s Block, that we have ever noticed anywhere.  We saw tow pictures put up in quite small lockets, that were more perfect than any of a similar size which ever came under our observation.  We have always thought Mr. Allen a good artist, and have respectably said as much, but it seems to us that he has made a very marked improvement in his work since he removed to his new rooms.

Reports of Committees, Made at the Cattle, Show and Fair of the York County Agricultural Society, held at Saco, Oct. 13th, 14th and 15th, 1858…On Paintings…

The Ambrotypes and Photographs were entered by E. H. McKenney, and Adams, of Biddeford, and A. R. Davis, of Saco.

Mr. McKenney, though unfortunate in the loss by fire, in the Spring, of his instruments, and consequently working under a disadvantage in the use of new ones, has succeeded in entering for exhibition, twenty or ore pictures, which won the admiration of your Committee, In tone, truthfulness, and beauty of finish, we look upon Mr. McKenney’s pictures as being in the highest style of the art.  We award to Mr. McKenney the first premium of $3.00.

To Mr. A. R. Davis. Whose pictures, many of them, were really meritorious, particularly a Photograph of Mr. Milliken, we award a premium of $1.00.

Ambrotypes, Pictures Taken On Glass. At R. Adams & Co., No. 163 Middle Street…Portland.  These Pictures differ essentially from the Daguerreotype, as they can be seen at any angle, are not reversed, will not corrode or change by time, are as permanent as the glass on which they are made, and will retain their brilliancy for ages.

Letters Patent have been obtained for the United States, Great Britain and France, by Mr. Cutting, the Inventor.

R. Adams & Co. have the exclusive right for making these Pictures in this city.  A. M. McKenney.  Rufus Adams.

Re-issue of the Ambrotype Patent.  The great merit of the Ambrotype Pictures has been most signally shown, by the united efforts of some of the principal Daguerreotypist to break down and prevent a re-issue of the Patent.  They have been defeated by the Government in their attempts, and a new patent has been issued, covering the entire claims of the Patentee, in making pictures on Glass, and hermetically sealing them between two plates of glass, with Balsam of Fir or its equivalent, giving exceeding brilliancy and beauty of tone, which cannot be affected by the atmosphere, water, or acids; making it as enduring as the glass in which it is secured.

The word Ambrotype, coined expressly to designate the Picture, is also patented.  All persons, not having purchased the rights, that are making use of the term, and covered with varnish and black paint, will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The genuine Pictures all have the patent stamp.  Cutting & Bowdoin, The Originators And Proprietors.

R. Adams, 163 Middle Street, Has the exclusive right of the Patent, and Ambrotypes can be had at no other rooms in this city. Advertisement ran from September 30 to December 30, 1856.

1857                Rooms opposite the Store of Barker, Parrish & Co., Aberdeen, Mississippi.

Mr. Wright was recorded I one advertisement that was recorded from June 14 to July 23, 1857 in the Sunny South (Aberdeen, Mississippi).  Something New!  Sky-Light Ambrotypes!  Wright’s Picture Gallery Is at last complete, and vies with any place of the kind in the Southern country.  The subscriber is now prepared to take Ambrotypes by the late London Process.  By this process, it will be seen that pictures process a strength not inferior to the most celebrated Oil Paintings, yet preserving all the beauty of light and shade which can be found in the finest Mezzzolent Engravings.  By a new chemical preparation, the likeness is so protected as to remain unchanged by atmospheric influence, and cannot be tarnished or injured by washing or rubbing.—There is a degree of perfection about these pictures that render them a great more valuable than the ordinary Ambrotype; the likeness is brought out in more full, round, and life-like appearance than by the old process.  Eight years constant practice, in the Photographic Art, enables Mr. Wright to state, with confidence, that his pictures cannot be surpassed in any part of the world.  The most artistic skill exercised as to position; also, in equalizing the light and shade on the face, so as to give every life-like expression, and entirely obviate that flat, cadaverous expression, so common to Daguerreotypes.

Lovers of nature and of Natures art, and the public generally, are invited to call and examine specimens.

Williams was recorded in four advertisements, one of which he was mentioned in, in the Maine Farmer (Augusta, Maine).  The first advertisement ran from October 21, 1852 to January 13, 1853.  S. N. Williams, (Successor to A. J. Pierce,) Daguerreotype Gallery, Granite Hall Building, Water Street, Augusta, Me.  Likenesses taken in Clear or Cloudy Weather—Hours for Children from 10 A. M. to 2 P. M.  Painted or Daguerreotype Likenesses accurately copied.  Mr. Pierce will remain a few weeks at the Room.

The second advertisement ran from October 13, 1853 to February 9, 1854.  S. N. Williams, (Successor to A. J. Pierce,) Daguerrean Gallery, Granite Hall, Water Street, Augusta, Me.  Stock & Apparatus at Boston Prices.

He was mentioned in the third advertisement that that first appeared on June 22, 1854.

Dupee respectfully inform his friends and the public generally, that he has taken the Rooms formerly occupied by Pierce & Williams, for the purpose of Daguerreotyping.  Having one of the largest Cameras in the city, he is prepared to take large pictures, and especially groups, (no matter how many,) arranged in the most appropriate style.  Having paid particular attention to taking Children, and being provided with a quick working Camera, he can take small children in one quarter of the usual time.  Hours for Children from 9 A. M. till 2 P. M.  Likenesses taken in clear or cloudy weather, and warranted perfect, for the low price of $1 and upwards, including case.  Also inserted in Rings, Pins, Lockets, Seals, &c., a large assortment of which he has on hand at all times.  H having had long experience in this business, solocots a share of your patronage.  All work entrusted to his care will be promptly attended to and warranted as good as the best.

Portraits, Daguerreotypes and Engravings, copied accurately and put in cases or frames.  The public are invited to call and judge for themselves.  Mr. Dupee, by attention to business, and keeping his rooms open at all hours, hopes to secure Miniatures of all who call and are in want.

I take this opportunity to return my thanks to my friends and patrons for their liberal patronage.  I have sold my Rooms to Isaac H.
