Returned, Wm. B. Matthews, Daguerrean, has returned to Ravenna, where large numbers are in waiting for a chance to get their likenesses taken in that lively, life like and expressive appearance which all Matthews’ pictures have.

It is well known by all persons of the present day that all fine paintings, or likenesses, are mostly executed by northern lights, as lights and shades are more correctly blended together from that exposure.  Matthews has a powerful, high north light, and can execute likenesses in all kinds of weather.  Likenesses taken by southern or western lights are mostly of a deadly and consumptive look, as the light and shade (the life of the likeness) is not correctly given; most inexperienced daguerreans make choice of such lights.

It is entirely a mistake to say that the Daguerreotypes executed by Matthews, are “pictures, and nothing else.”  They are real likenesses, and though not ‘as large as life.’ yet quite as natural.  Let those who doubt go and see for themselves.

“Secure the Shadow ere the Substance Fades.”   How fondly we cherish the memory of absent friends.  And if the companion in whose friendship and affection we took such delight, has passed through the veil that separates us in this dream-land from the real world, how tenderly we recall each recollection—how earnestly we strive to hold on to those memories which represent them as still present with us, and which are like golden chains let down from heaven, by which we fain would climb to that state of perfect fruition.  Who would forego those joys which have their birth in sorrow—who would consign to oblivion the treasures of their heart, though every memory but recalls the sundered tie?  And if there is any thing which can soothe the wounded feelings, which can pour balm into the bleeding heart, it is the possession of the exact likeness of the dear departed—we feel, while gazing at the familiar lineaments, that we hold in our hands an unanswerable proof of immortality.  If the image engraven on the silver plate on the silver plate in a few seconds by the simple light of the sun, will remain unchanged for years—it may be for centuries—we know that the spirit breathed into this mortal clay by the breath of the Almighty, can never die!  And while we gaze, we can in imagination see them rising on wings of love and soaring towards the great Source of Life, as the eagle spreads its pinions towards the god of day.

While so good an opportunity is offered, and so skillful an artist is in your midst, as William B. Matthews, neglect not to procure the daguerreotypes of your friends.  We recommend to all our friends to give him a call, and we think they cannot fail of being suited; for while his likenesses are perfect, his charges are very reasonable.

We are apt to procrastinate this matter, thinking that any time will do; but life is uncertain, and a delay may occasion us lasting regrets.  Let us therefore embalm our friends in this way while they are yet with us, for we know not what a day may bring forth.

‘Tis You.

You that have Beauty should to Matthews take it.

You that have none should go and let him make it.

Matthew’s Daguerrean Rooms Will be closed soon for some time.  A fine Likeness of a worthy friend is of great value; Recollect That!

Think not these portraits, by the sunlight made,

Shades though they are, will like a shadow fade;

No—when the lip of fresh in dust shall lie,

When Death’s grey film o’erspreads the beaming eye,

These life-like pictures, mocking at decay,

Will still be fresh and vivid as to-day.—Hill.

Matthews’ Sky-light Daguerrean Rooms Wm. B. Matthews (formerly from Plumb’s, N. Y.) has again opened and repaired his old rooms, where he will be pleased to serve his old friends and customers (that may want their likenesses) with the finest Daguerreotypes ever before taken in this country.  Having a long experience in the art, and having made arrangements with Johnson of Cleveland; Hill, Humphrey & Plumb of N. Y. for all new and useful improvements, he will be able to produce the finest and clearest likenesses that can be taken.  My Likenesses of late have been examined by the best judges from N. York and Washington, also by C. E. Johnson, Daguerrean of Cleveland, and pronounced as fine as the Daguerreotype science is capable of producing at present.

Having a large and powerful sky-light and side light combined, I can produce likenesses in a few seconds and give every shade or tone that the sitter may require.  In addition to the above I have just purchased a new and fine instrument for large likenesses to be put in frames or cases and the smallest for rings, pins, wristlets, lockets, &c., together with a fresh supply of the finest cases ever before in Ravenna.

Having come to the conclusion to make Ravenna my residence I feel confident of success in business.

N. B.  Call on Matthews for your Likeness and you will get no bogus article.  Wm. B. Matthews.

Daguerreotype Pictures.  By reference to a card in our advertising column, it will be seen that Wm. B. Matthews has disposed of his entire interest in the Daguerrean business in this place to Morrill & Co., and that he will make no more pictures in this town.  Messrs. Morrill & Co. have a fine suit of rooms in Allen’s block a few rods east of the public square, where they are producing pictures which for correctness of representation and beauty of finish cannot be surpassed by those of any other artist in the country.  An inspection of their work cannot fail to give convince any one of their ability to give entire satisfaction.  Those who secure the “shadow ere the substance fade,” should not fail to pay them a visit.

We inadvertently omitted to mention last week that the Town Council had appointed William B. Matthews, Marshall, in place of H. S. Doty, resigned.  Also that they had appoint Edmund Twitt, Deputy Marshall.

These gentlemen will make prompt, energetic and efficient officers.  The vigilance, shrewdness and night watching of the Marshall and his Deputy, by which the late bogus money manufactory in this village was broken up, attest the wisdom of the Council in their appointment.

I confine myself strictly to the daguerreotype, content to pursue the most pleasing & Correct style and process by which the human face is produced.  My rooms are large and convenient, 18 by 80 feet, which gives good circulation of fresh air, which is one [of] the thousand mysteries of producing fine, clear, and beautiful impressions—My motto is No daguerrian shall produce better impressions of the human face than I can.

Ambrotypes—Improvement In Daguerreotyping.—Mr. Matthews, our skillful and accomplished Daguerrean Artist, has shown us some new Ambrotypes likenesses recently taken by him.  Mr. Matthews promptly keeps up with all the improvements in his beautiful and invaluable art, and has lost no time and spared no expense, since its discovery and perfection, to introduce the great Ambrotype improvement to his numerous friends and customers in Portage County.

The Ambrotype likeness is produced on a superior quality of white plate glass—the likeness is brought out in more full, round and distinct life-like proportions than in the old process—it has not the glare of the old polished plate, but can be viewed with the ease and distinctness of an engraving—it is positively indistructable [sic.] to the action of the atmosphere, or of water, and can not be tarnished or injured even by washing and rubbing.—Likenesses by this process can be taken in all weather, and at a few second’s sitting.

Mr. Matthews is daily putting up Ambrotype Likenesses in his own inimitable style, and there is a constant rush to his rooms to view them.  They elicit the admiration of every beholder.

We understand the Mr. Humphrey, the editor of Humphrey’s Journal of the Daguerreotype and Photographic Arts, published in New York, has been the medium by which this improvement, and the manner of using it, have been introduced into the western country.

Photography  Ambrotypes.  To those wishing to engage in the glass and paper processes, the undersigned is prepared to give instruction in every branch of Photography, and offers his services on such terms as will prove satisfactory to those feeling an interest in the Art.  Having of late received numerous applications to visit numerous places, for the purpose of imparting instruction in the practice of the Collodian Process, I have made all the necessary arrangements for filling any engagement to visit Daguerreotypist and others at their own rooms—no matter how distant—and upon terms advantageous to them.

Every one will readily perceive the advantage of having their own rooms put in order for the successful practice of the art.  This I am prepared to do at the same rate that others charge for instruction where the learner calles upon them—with the only addition of expenses at, and going to and returning from, the place I visit.  By this arrangement, the Daguerreotypist will suffer no interruption in his business, as he is at home and ready to attend to his regular customers.

As some may feel that the patents, as now existing, are to be respected, and in order to meet the wishes of all such, I have made arrangements with Messrs.  Whipple, Cutting & Co., by which I am enabled to furnish all with a Right, and also their Collodian process, which was furnished to me recently, while at Messrs. Whipple & Black’s Photographic establishment, Boston.

Ambrotypes.—The improved process for producing these beautiful and popular miniatures given in all its branches.  It requires only a few days to be enabled to take these pictures with all the perfection of art.

I have with me a complete set of the necessary apparatus and chemicals to commence work immediately; and every one who engages my services will receive a thorough practical knowledge of Photography upon glass and paper.

Chemicals.—Instruction will be given for the preparation of every compound or mixture which it may be deemad  [sic.] advisable for the practitioner to prepare.  Many of these mixtures are now selling in the market for several times the cost of their manufacture.  This unnecessary expanse can be saved.

All letters intended for me during the present month (October) may be directed to Cleveland, Ohio.

In case persons should wish to see me personally, I can be found at Matthews’ Daguerrean establishment in Ravenna from the 9th to the 16th, and at Miller’s in Akron from the 16th to the 20th, and Brokaw’s in Oberlin from the 20th to the 28th.

Terms:—For complete instruction, including Whipple, Cutting & Co’s process, one hundred dollars, and expenses to and from and while at the place I am called upon to visit.  S. D. Humphrey.

Ambrotype Rooms—In Seymore Block, Ravenna, Ohio.  Wm. B. Matthews & Son give notice that they are now introducing into Portage County [at a great expense] the newly invented and much admired pictures in Glass, called Ambrotypes.  The Ambrotype [unchanging, &c.] is taken upon fine plate glass.  An indestructible Cement is then poured upon the picture, and another plate of fine glass pressed upon the Cement, soon hardens, and the two plates become in effect one with the picture in the center, as permanent as the glass itself, and will remain unchangeable for ages.  Cloudy weather makes no difference as the glass is wet when the picture is taken.  The prices are a trifle more than the common Daguerreotype.

Take Notice.—The public are cautioned against a counterfeit article; taken on single glass, and backed with black paint, varnish, &c.  They are not Ambrotypes.

Persons from the country should come as early as possible, as our Rooms are always full.  W. B. Matthews & Son.

Death Of William B. Matthews.—We are called upon to place in our obituary columnthis week the death of an amiable young townsman, William J. Matthews.  We have long known that he was doomed to an early grave, and have often witnessed, with inexpressible sorrow, his sad, faint smile, while he yet lingered among us, with the marks of the destroyer visible upon him.

His father, Mr. Wm. B. Matthews, was with him when he died, but to his bereaved mother, so rapid was his decline, it was not permitted to smooth the dying pillow of her distant son.  He died calmly, fortified and comforted by Christian faith and hope.  Like the early dew he has passed away, but leaves behind him the fragrance of a good example and an unsullied name.

Authentic particulars of the late Balloon Ascension by Two Children.  The startling story of the late frightful ascent of two small children alone in a balloon, has naturally excited some incredulity, which, in turn, has been increased  by the rather diverse accounts given the event.  But the return to St. Louis of the aeronaut, Mr. S. M. Brooks, enables the Democrat to give what it states to be an authentic confirmation and true version of the thrilling narrative.  This gentleman states substantially as follows:

He was to have ascended from the fair grounds at Centralia on Friday, the 17th inst, but finding himself unwell, accepted the offer of another aeronaut, Mr. Wilson, who volunteered to take his place in the balloon.  Mr. Wilson effected a beautiful ascent, at 5½ p.m., floated westward and then south eastward, rising two and a half miles, and at about 6½ p. m. descended, sixteen miles south eastward of the starting point.

He was caught by a tree about 45 rods from the farm house of Mr. Benjamin Harvey.  The spot is some 2½ miles from Rome, Jefferson County.  Mr. Harvey and his family, and others, gathered , and disentangled the air ship.  They then pulled the car to the ground and some boys held the ropes as the voyager alighted, and while he was drawn off in conversation with the inquisitive people.  The balloon was towed to the house, and Mr. Harvey prepared to have some sport by rising the length of the rope, to be pulled down.  Proving too heavy to rise, he stepped out and put his three children, a lad of 3 years, a girl of 8 and a still older girl.  At this point Mr. Wilson called out to those holding the ropes to be sure to hold fast.  But the 3 children were too heavy, and the eldest was taken out.

At this instant, through the unwatchfulness of the person at the cords, the balloon suddenly and very swiftly went up!  The anchor stuck in a rail fence, but tore away, while a cry of horror burst from the agonized group.  The children screamed with horror, and the piteous appeal “Pull me down, father!” as it instantly grew fainter and fainter, rendered the parents, and indeed all present, for the time perfectly frantic.  It was now past seven o’clock, was becoming dark, and the balloon was soon lost sight of!  A period of more intense wretchedness to the parents’ heart, can scarcely be imagined.

As there was little wind the balloon had gone almost directly upward, till it disappearance in a southeasterly course…

It was about three o’clock on Saturday morning that Mr. Ignatin Atchison, living on Moore prairie, eight miles from Mount Vernon, got up as he says, and went out upon his porch to see the “blazing star”—the comet.  An immense spectre rising from a tree, about twenty yards distance, rather appalled him, and he re-entered the house and waked the family.  On his coming out again a weak and piteous voice called to him from the spectre, “Come here and let us down; we’re almost froze!”  Mr. Atchison speedily perceived the astonishing nature of the case, mustered help, cut away several limbs of the tree, and drew the car in safety to the ground!…

A messenger arrived at Mr. Harvey’s eighteen miles distance at 2 p. m., with the transporting tidings that the children were safe.  We will leave it to our reader’s to suggest the joy which the intelligence caused.  It was late in the afternoon when the little ones arrived and were clasped once more in the embrace of their parents.

The happy result was received in Centralia, and announced on Sunday morning in the churches amid ecstacies [sic.] of joy.  The children were brought there on Monday, and welcomed with the firing of cannon and a general jubilee.

You that have none, come and let Matthews make it!

And so we went—and got took, beauty and all; and since have wandered around with our phiz uglier than ever—coz why—the Artist made us look so well, that we actually felt our ugliness by contrast.  And now comes the sequel—Matthews made our beauty—but somebody else took it—right off nail from among the other specimens—that he had arranged so artistically—said nary a word to nobody, and she brought it right home to make us constantly feel our plain looks.  Now we don’t countenance any such proceedings, and shall make a fuss about it if the trick is repeated.

Solar Photographs.  Wm. B. Matthews & Co. Have arranged rooms over F. M. Tomkins & Co.’s store expressly to make the new and beautiful Solar Photograph full life size and true to life.  These Solar Pictures are new, and are fast supplying the place of the Oil Painted Portrait.  They are much admired by all that have seen them, and are now becoming ornaments in the parlors of many of our citizens, to be handed down to the rising generations.  The heads of every well regulated family would do great injustice to their children to neglect this opportunity.

A complaint is general that photographs change.  The only trouble is oin the manipulation.  They were rightly immersed in hard water.  We have a large fountain of soft water arranged expressly for our Solars and other pictures, and no change will take place in any pictures made at our rooms.  Pictures from life size. Solar down to any size desired made in the highest style of the art and at as short notice as possible.
