Lipman, of the above firm would respectfully inform the Ladies and Gentlemen of Evansville and the public generally, that they have taken Rooms on Water st., over Insurance office, and that they are permanently located at Evansville, in the Daguerrean Rooms formerly occupied by Gove & Widney, where one of them may be found at all hours of the day, ready and prepared to take Likenesses of all sizes and descriptions, to exhibit specimens of their work, sell stock, give instruction in the art and wait upon all who may favor them with a call.

N. B.—All work done by them will be warranted to give perfect satisfaction or no charge made.

John G. Wolf was recorded in three advertisements and an entry from the residence section of New York City Directory.  The first advertisement ran from February 22 to 25, 1840  in The Evening Post (New York, New York.)  Daguerreotype.  In reply to the many advertisements

for the construction and sale of the Apparatus for the Daguerreotype.  I wish to make this public announcement, that besides the Optical part, I construct the whole of the apparatus, and furnish single or double glasses,[and] that, to my knowledge, all glasses hitherto used for this purpose in this country have been supplied by me.  I offer to every one who wishes to make a progress in the art to suit their several wishes, and explain the effects of different modifications of the lenses; and take the liberty to call upon all the scientific gentlemen who have until now practiced this art in New York, who have used my glasses, to testify their satisfaction to their friends of my workmanship.  W. The second advertisement appeared in the Evening Star (New York, New York) on July 6, 1840.

Daguerreotype Likenesses.  Mr. Y. G. Wolp (sic.) takes pleasure in announcing to the public, that he will take Photogenic, or Daguerreotype Likenesses in the course of a week.  He feels confident in asserting from his many recent experiments, that he will be able to practice them in a much shorter time, and far superior to any that has yet been taken.  Residence, 40½ Chatham street.

John G. Wolf, daguerreotype 23 Chambers was recorded from the 1841/1842 New York City Directory.  (New York, New York.) 

The third advertisement appeared in The New York Herald (New York, New York) and ran from June 4 to 6, 1844.  Daguerreotype Cameras. J. G. Wolf, Optician, No. 90 Nassau street, up stairs, informs the Public that he manufactures a new kind of Daguerreotype Apparatus; for taking large and small Portraits, with one instrument.  It is far superior than any Camera before in use.

N. B. Lenses for daguerreotype and Telescopes; Achromatic and Single, also Priams, Microscopes and Spectacle Glasses, of Glass or Crystal, warranted correct, ground and polished, by J. G. W.

Witt was recorded in one advertisement in the Glasgow Weekly Times (Glasgow, Missouri) on June 10, 1848.  Daguerreotype Apparatus For Sale.  A Camera, of good size and great power, together with a lot of stock, such as plates, chemicals, and fixtures will be sold cheap.  Apply to D. H. Witt, near Fayet.

D. H. Witt is not recorded in other photographic directories.  It is unknown if he was a daguerreotypist, an amateur, or a retailer.

Fletcher Westray

Fletcher Westray was recorded in the 1850 New York City Directory, residence listing as a  Commission Merchant, 71 Front, H-24 E. 18th and two advertisement.  The first ran on September 26 & 28, 1850 in the New York Daily Tribune (New York, New York).  Daguerreotype Plates.—Seven cases Photographic Plates silvered by this electro-chemical process, the great superiority of which can be testified to by eminent Daguerreotypist, just received and for sale by Fletcher Westray, 71 Front-st.

The second ran in the New York Herald (New York, New York) on September 26, 1850.

Willian West

Willian West was recorded in two advertisements in The New York Herald (New York, New York.)  The first advertisement ran from June 22 to September 5, 1843.  Philadelphia Daguerreotype Establishment.  Exchange Building, Rooms 26 & 27.  The Subscribers, having procured the agency for the sale of Voigtander’s Daguerreotype Apparatus, constructed according to Professor Petzval’s calculation, have on hand a large assortment of these Apparatus, and artists as well as amateurs of their art, wishing to procure a good apparatus, will find it to their advantage to procure instruments of this construction.  They also have lately imported a large quantity of German and French plates, and all the chemicals used in their art, which they warrant in every respect, as they are made to their order.  Polishing substances, and morocco cases, and all necessary materials, are sold on the most reasonable terms.  The following gentlemen have agreed to act as their agents, viz:—

E. White, 175 Broadway, N. Y. P. Haas, Esq., Washington, D. C. Dr. A. Caspari, Richmond, Va. P. Laurens, Esq., Savannah, Ga. William West, Esq., Cincinnati, Ohio.

All communications (post paid) and orders, accompanied with remittance, will be promptly attended to, and should be directed to W. & F. Langenheim, Exchange Building, Phila.

The second advertisement ran from October 17, 1843 to January 26, 1844.  Philadelphia Daguerreotype Establishment.  Exchange Building, Rooms 26 & 27.  The Subscribers, has received a large supply of Voigtander’s celebrated Daguerreotype Apparatus, large and small sizes, with achromatic lenses made according to Professor Petzval’s calculation.

Also a new supply of the best plates and chemicals, which he warrants good and sells at reduced prices.

The following gentlemen have agreed to act as their agents, viz:—

William West is not recorded in other photographic directories.  William West is possibly a retailer of photographic supplies or a druggist but no other information has been found to date.

Welton & Townsend (Joseph C. Welton & Benjamin C. Townsend) were recorded in one advertisement in The New York Herald (New York, New York) and two New York City Directories 1842/1843 and 1843/1844.  The advertisement ran from April 20 to 26, 1843. Daguerreotype Plates.  “Scovills” first quality plates, pronounced by the first operators in this country, to be superior to any imported plates, for sale by their agents, Welton & Townsend, 42 Beaver street.                                                                                                                       

1842/1843 New York City Directory recorded the partnership in the directory as Buttons 42 Beaver in partnership as Welton & Townsend.

1843/1844 New York City Directory recorded the partnership as Welton & Townsend 5 William.

James C. Spencer

1845                Rooms over A. L. & G. N. Webb’s Store, Plattsburgh, New York.

James C. Spencer of the firm Barstow & Spencer was recorded in two advertisements that appeared in the Plattsburgh Republican (Plattsburgh, New York).  The first advertisement appeared on March 15, 1845.  Colored Photographs.  “First Come First Served.”  Barstow & Spencer Will remain in Plattsburgh for a short time only, taking Daguerreotype Miniatures, at the rooms hereto fore occupied by Geo. F. Barstow where they will be happy to attend to as many more as may choose to embrace the opportunity of obtaining, for a trifle, beautifully accurate likenesses of themselves or friends. 

Ladies and gentlemen are invited to call and examine specimens of their work.  Geo. F. Barstow. Jas. C. Spencer.  March 11.

The second advertisement appeared on May 10, 1845.  Plumbe’s Premium Colored Daguerreotypes.  Barstow and Spencer would inform the public that they will remain at their rooms one week longer, and that they have just returned from Plumbe’s National Miniature Gallery, New York, with the latest improvements in the Photographic Art; they are certain of giving their customers complete satisfaction by furnishing them with Pictures which for beauty and accuracy of delineation cannot be surpassed.

Ladies and Gentlemen are invited to call and examine the late specimens of their work.

N. M. Smith was recorded in two advertisements in The New York Reformer (Watertown, New York).  The first advertisement appeared on March 13, 1856.  To Daguerreotype Artists.  Having disposed of my entire wholesale stock of Daguerreotype Materials to N. M. Smith & Co., Druggists, No. 8 Safford Block, I would now cheerfully recommend them to my customers and the public generally. C. P. Westcott.  Watertown, N. Y. March 1st, 1856.

The Subscribers, in addition to the stock purchase of C. P. Westcott, are now receiving direct from the importers and most approved manufacturers, a full and general assortment of cases, Plates, Chemicals, and all materials used in taking Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes and Photographic Pictures; and will hereafter keep a full stock to supply operators in either of the above Arts.  Also Cameras, Tubes, and a general variety of apparatus used for that purpose.

The second advertisement appeared on May 7, 1857.  Melainotype.  The Attention Of Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, and Photographic Artists, is particularly invited to this new and beautiful discovery, the Melainotype; combining cheapness and durability, with great saving of labor, time and trouble.—it is certainly the newest, latest, and greatest improvement in the art.
