John Liewer

1857                Rooms opposite the Post Office, over Sulzbacher’s Store, Glasgow, Missouri.

John Liewer was recorded in an advertisement on March 26, 1857 in the Glasgow Weekly Times  (Glasgow, Missouri).  Ambrotypes.  Mr. John Liewer & Co., are prepared to take any description of the above beautiful style of Pictures, and will be happy to see those who may need their services.  The Ambrotype is a Positive Picture on Glass.  It possesses a softness, rotundity, a commingling of light and shade, a distinctness and delicacy of tone, which the old Daguerreotype has never attained.  It can be viewed with all the ease and distinctness of an Engraving; but above all, is bound to last as long as the Glass itself.  Rooms opposite the Post Office, over Sulzbacher’s Store.

John Liewer is not recorded in other photographic directories.

Loozinski L. Lewis

Loozinski L. Lewis was recorded on January 1, 1856 in the Photographic and fine Arts Journal  (New York, New York).  In an article entitled the Photographic Galleries of America.  Number One, New York. The author visited 69 Galleries in New York City.

L. L. Lewis, Broadway — I admired these pictures especially for their regularity. They are sharp and clear ; the eyes are well defined and show some animation. I was much pleased with the arrangements.

Loozinski L. Lewis is recorded in other photographic directories, but is included here because of the first-hand account of his work.

[1] Not all first names or complete addresses were recorded in article.   Craig’s Daguerreian Registry was used to assist in identification when possible first name and address were added.

E. R. Lewis

1859                Rooms above Evans & Son’s store, Ebensburg, Pennsylvania.

E. R. Lewis was recorded in two announcements in The Alleghanian (Ebensburg, Pennsylvania). The first announcement appeared on October 20, 1859. Personal Mention.—E. R. Lewis, the well-known Daguerrean Artist, was in town with his picture-taking apparatus, during the continuance of the Fair.  He was overwhelmed with work during his entire stay.  The people up here appreciate good artist, and he is one.

The second announcement appeared on December 8, 1859.  Daguerrean Artist.—E. R. Lewis, the celebrated artist, is in town.  Those who are disposed to “secure the shadow ere the substance fades,” should certainly give him a call, as he has carved for himself the reputation of being the best “picture-taker” in the county.  He can be consulted, for this week only, at his rooms, above Evans & Son’s store.

E. R. Lewis is not recorded in other photographic directories as being active in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. Directory of Pennsylvania Photographers 1839-1900 does list an E. R. Lewis as being active in Pittston, Pennsylvania in 1861-1862, but it’s unknown if they are the same person.

Lewis & Company

1847                271 Broadway, corner of Chambers Street, New York, New York.

Lewis & Company was recorded in an announcement on August 19, 1847 in the New York Daily Tribune (New York, New York).  One of the most beautiful specimens of daguerreotypes we think we have ever seen is one taken by Lewis & Co. 271 Broadway, corner of Chambers st. (entrance on Chambers.)  By a new process they give a correct likeness on a pure silver surface, which does not fade with age.  The tone and finish of their colored daguerreotypes are peculiar features of the improvement, and are not excelled by those whose prices are much higher at similar establishments.

This is possibly same Lewis recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry 1848-1850 at 74 Chambers Street, New York, NY.

Levi.

Mr. Letts

1856                Address Unknown, Dundee, New York.

Mr. Letts appeared in one announcement on August 6, 1856 in the Penn Yan Democrat (Penn-Yan, New York).  A New Picture.—We were recently shown by Mr. Letts, of Dundee, an entirely new process of taking Daguerreotypes, of his own invention.  The pictures are taken on paper, and closely resemble very fine oil paintings, the natural color of the hair, face, clothing, &c., being accurately preserved.—We are informed that the coloring, &c., is all done at one process, and in less time than is required to take the ordinary daguerreotype.  This is doubtless one of the greatest improvements in the art yet discovered, and we hope that the highest expectations of the inventor, who is a practical Chemist and Daguerrean artist, may be realized.  We understand that he has already secured a patent for his invention.

The is possibly the same J. M. Lett listed in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry as being active in Dundee, New York in 1859.

H., where they will be prepared to take Daguerreotype Likenesses, in the course of two or three days, in the most perfect manner.

Having been engaged in the business a long time, and being posted in all the new and modern improvements of the art, they do not hesitate in saying that they can produce Likenesses equal, if not superior, to any heretofore taken in this place.
