Mason, Sanford (c. 1798-after 1862) Portrait Painter, born in Rhode Island. He began his career in Providence as a sign painter, turning to portrait work about 1824. About 1826 he moved to Boston, opened a studio, and exhibited at the Athenaeum in 1827-28, but the latter year he returned to Providence. During the 1830’s he spent most of his time in Boston and Lowell (Mass.) from 1842 to 1845 he was in Philadelphia, where his son William Sanford Mason began his career. By 1847 he was back in Providence and thereafter he seems to have shuttled back and forth between Boston and Philadelphia. He is last heard from in Philadelphia in 1862.[1]
