Wheeler was mentioned in one advertisement for Hathaway and Letts that appeared on May 5, 1859 in the Yates County Chronicle (Pen Yan, New York).  Photographs!  Life Size!—Life Color!  Mr. J. M. Letts, of the Elmira firm of Hathaway & Letts, will visit Penn Yan every few days for the purpose of taking Negatives For Photographs to be finished in Elmira.  They will be taken from the smallest dimension up to life size.  They will also be handsomely and naturally colored, so as to present all the elegance and expression of a first class Oil Painting.—These Pictures are the most popular Photographs ever taken.

Daguerreotypes of Deceased Persons Or Others, Can Be Copied And Enlarged To Any Size And Colored In Oil.—Pastel Or Plain.

1856                Address Unknown, Dundee, New York.

Mr. Letts appeared in one announcement on August 6, 1856 in the Penn Yan Democrat (Penn-Yan, New York).  A New Picture.—We were recently shown by Mr. Letts, of Dundee, an entirely new process of taking Daguerreotypes, of his own invention.  The pictures are taken on paper, and closely resemble very fine oil paintings, the natural color of the hair, face, clothing, &c., being accurately preserved.—We are informed that the coloring, &c., is all done at one process, and in less time than is required to take the ordinary daguerreotype.  This is doubtless one of the greatest improvements in the art yet discovered, and we hope that the highest expectations of the inventor, who is a practical Chemist and Daguerrean artist, may be realized.  We understand that he has already secured a patent for his invention.

The is possibly the same J. M. Lett listed in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry as being active in Dundee, New York in 1859.
