  1. Thank you for this information on the little-known J. A. Phillips, but the brief data is puzzling and may well confuse a quick reader.

    The two dates of July 4 and 11, 1854 only refer to the three US Patents issued to James Ambrose Cutting at that time (for the use of collodion on glass).

    J. A. Phillips, whose name is stamped on the brass mat of the Ambrotype, may have been located for a short while in Fredonia, NY. His full name is still unknown.
