Mansfield Drug Store was recorded in one advertisement that appeared on August 25, 1852 in the Richland Shield and Banner (Mansfield, Ohio).  Daguerrean Artists’ Materials.  A full stock for sale cheap for Cash only, at the Mansfield Drug Store.  Nov. 5, ’51.

Mansfield Drug Store is not recorded in other photographic directories.  Craig’s Daguerreian Registry does record a Gilead Mansfield in Lexington as daguerreotypes and ambrotypes in 1859-1860 it is unknown if they are connected.  The distance (modern roads) between Mansfield and Lexington, Ohio is 7.3 miles.  Ohio Photographers 1839-1900 records him in Lexington from 1859 to 1897.

The first advertisement appeared on January 31, 1843.  Drugs, Dyes, Chemicals, Poisons, German Silver, &c., &c., &c.—Dr. Feuchtwanger inform his numerous friends and customers of the neighborhood and abroad, that he will furnish Acids of every description…Daguerreotype and Electrotype Apparatus, with its appertaining chemicals…For sale by Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger, 1 Wall st.

The second advertisement appeared on August 22, 1852.  Fly Paper, Daguerreotype Chemicals, Metals, &c.—Bleached Shellac, Disinfecties Liquid Chloride Soda, Sulphate Ammonia, Oil Colors. Araion Flowers, Cyanide Potassium, Bromine, Iodine, Chloride Iodine, Fumigating Pastilles, Pate de Reynauld, Kreosete, Zaffre, Manganese, Potassium, Gallic Acid.  Sponge Cloth.  All the goods warranted pure and for sale by Dr. L. Feuchtwanger, 141 Maiden lane.

The third advertisement appeared on February 4, 1853.  To Daguerreotypists, Steel Workers, Dentists, fireworkers, glassmakers, &c.—Bromine, iodine, chloride gold, hyposulphide, soda, cyanide, potassium, Vienna lime, English rouge,… L. Feuchtwanger, 141 Maiden lane. 

The fourth advertisement appeared on May 28, 1853.  To Daguerreotypist, Pyrotechnist, Glass makers, dentist, electroplaters,–Bromine, Iodine, hyposulphide soda, best English rouge, nitrate strontian, and harytachlorate of potash, zaffre, oxides of uranium, cohalt…Dr. L. The fifth advertisement appeared on June 1, 1853.  To Daguerreotypist, Pyrotechnists, Glassmakers, dentist, electroplaters,–Bromine, iodine, hyposulphide, best English rouge, nitrate strontian, and baryta, …Dr. L. Feuchtwanger, 141 Maiden lane.

The sixth advertisement appeared on August 11, 1854.  Daguerreotype Chemicals Very Cheap, wholesale and retail—Bromine, German and French, in sealed cans; fluorie acid, resublimed iodine, English hypesulphide soda, redistilled quicksilver, rouge, gallie and acids, plumbage, cyanide and iodide potassium, chloride, gold, &c., &c.; platina, nickel, bismuth, &c., for sale by Dr. L. Feuchtwanger, 141 Maiden lane.

The seventh advertisement appeared on October 22, 1854.  To Daguerreotypist, Electrotypists, Druggist, and Liquor dealers—a large stock of chemicals just landing: Bromine, iodine, hypo sulphide soda, chloride gold, salts gold, cyanide potassium, nitrate oxide and cyanide silver, carmine and rouge, plumbago, distilled quicksilver, &c….

The eighth advertisement appeared on August 6, 1855.  Cognac Oils, Essences Gin, Jamaica and St. Croix rum, apple, peach and cherry brandy, whiskey and port; patent medicines, essential oils, photographic, daguerreotype and electrotype chemicals, and all medals, for sale by Dr. L. Feuchtwanger, 98 Maiden lane.

The ninth advertisement appeared on September 2, 1855.  Daguerreotype and Photographic Chemicals and liquor flavoring, bromine, iodine, cyanide potassium, nitrate silver, pure ether, pyrogallic, sulphuric and acetic acids, iodides and bromides, ammonium, cadmium, colodion, hyposulphide soda, best and cheapest cognac oil, Otard and Rochelle brandy, peach, cherry, apple and prune essences, gin, rum, and whiskey, for sale by Dr. L. Feuchtwanger, 98 Maiden lane.

The tenth advertisement appeared on March 18, 1856.  To Liquor Dealers, Wholesale Grocers, Electrotypists and Photographers, &c.—Samples of liquors prepared from the best imported cognac oil, Jamaica and St. Croix rum, Holland gin, Monongahela and Scotch whiskey, peach, apple, cherry and raspberry brandies, and all necessary materials; oils peppermint, lemon, orange, sassafras, almonds and wintergreen; materials for all arts—daguerreotype, ambrotype and photographs; chemicals, such as bromine, zodion, salts gold, filtering paper, &c…. by Dr. L. The eleventh advertisement appeared on June 6, 1856.  Chemicals for the Daguerreotype and Ambrotypes, essential oils, best cognac oil, fireworks glassmakers and electrotype materials, at wholesale prices for sale by Dr. Feuchtwanger, 143 Maiden lane.

The twelfth advertisement appeared on July 7, 1856.  To Sojourning Country Merchants, Grocers, druggists and artizans.—Best imported white and green Cogniac oil, in original packages; essences: rum, gin, whiskey, apple, peach, cherry and raspberry brandy; oils:  lemon bergamot, sassafras, wintergreen, pimento, Melissa, juniper and caraway.  Ambrotype, photographic and daguerreotype materials and metals; gumarabic, carmine, ultramarine, china clay, varnishes, and patent medicines; Persian insect powder, fly paper, &c., for sale by Dr. Feuchtwanger, 143 Maiden lane.

George Doak was recorded in the New York City Directory from 1845-1859.  He was also recorded in the April 1851 issue of The Photographic Art-Journal,  and one advertisement in The New York Herald.  In 1843/1844 and 1844/1845he was not listed in the NYC directories.  From 1845/1846 directory to 1859/1860 directory he was listed as a Turner.  The one exception was 1856/1857 when he was listed as a Turner  & Patternmaker.

1845/1846 he was listed at 124 Mercer.

1846/1847 he was listed at 19 Canal.

1847/1848 & 1848/1849 he was listed without a business.  

1849/1850 & 1850/1851 he was listed at 39 Greene.

1851/1852 to1854/1855 he was listed at127 Anthony. 

1855/1856 to 1857/1858 he was listed at 127 Worth. 

1858/1859 he was listed at 218 Centre. 

1859/1860 he was listed at 215 Centre.  

From 1845 to 1858 he lived at 163 Greene. In 1859 he resident was at 12 Rush, Brooklyn.

On April 1851 he was recorded in The Photographic Art-Journal.  Doak’s Camera Stand.  The above engraving represents a new style of camera stand for the double whole size instrument, invented and manufactured by Mr. George Doak, 127 Anthony-st., New York.  A glance at it is all that is required to convince any one of its superiority for the purpose for which it is intended.  The instrument is elevated or depressed by means of the wheel C; through which the screw rod B passes.  A, is the screw for inclining the camera box to the proper angle; D, the set screw for securing the instrument at the proper height:  E, a thumb screw for fastening the top of the stand, which revolves on a pivot.  Messrs. Gurney, Lawrence and Harrison, each use these stands, and pronounce to be superior to any article of the kind in use.  We are decidedly of the same opinion.

The advertisement was recorded on May 24, 1855 in The New York Herald (New York, New York).  To Daguerreotypist.—For Sale, a Quantity of apparatus, consisting of cameras, coating boxes, buffing wheel, &c.  Apply to George Doak, 127 Anthony street, in the rear.

George Doak is recorded in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry under George Doack.  The advertisement raises the question was he making Daguerreotypes?  Possibly as an amateur image maker?

Lorenzo Delano was recorded in two advertisements in the Arkansas Intelligencer (Van Buren, Arkansas).  The first advertisement ran on April 8 & 15, 1843.  For Sale.  The subscriber offers for sale, a superior Daguerreotype Apparatus, together with a lot of plates and cases, and every thing necessary for taking likenesses.  Lorenzo Delano.  Park Hill, C. N.

The second appeared on April 8, 1843.  Lorenzo Delano & Co., Dealers In Dry Goods Groceries Hardware, Crockery Ware, Hats, Caps, Boots, Shoes, Ready-made Clothing, &c. &c., Park Hill, Cherokee Nation.

Lorenzo Delano is not recorded in other photographic directories.  It is unknown if Delano ever used the camera, or if he was a supplier of daguerrean materials.

S. K. Collins was recorded in one advertisement that ran occasionally from October 29, 1846 to January 21, 1847 in the Vermont Watchman and State Journal (Montpelier, Vermont).  Daguerreotype Artists Look At This.  A Lot of Polishing Stone, and Rouge, and French Colors Prepared by the celebrated Chemist, Baker, of Philadelphia, just received, and for sale at the Drug Store of S. K. Collins.  October 21, 1846.

George W. Coble

George W. Coble is recorded in five advertisements and two announcements in the Sunbury American (Sunbury, Pennsylvania).  The first advertisement ran from December 1, 1849 to January 5, 1850.  Coble’s Tooth Ache Drops. A most valuable cure for the Tooth Ache.  For sale by George W. Coble.  Third (red) House above Railroad, in Water street. 

The second advertisement ran from October 19 to December 14, 1850.  Envelopes.—The subscriber would respectfully announce to his friends and a generous public, that he is manufacturing Envelopes of the best quality and of all kinds.  For sale by Geo. W. Coble. 

The first announcement appeared on September 10, 1853.  Daguerreotypes.—We call the attention of our readers to the advertisement of George W. Coble in another column.

The third advertisement ran from September 10 to 24, 1853.  Daguerreotypes!!  Geo. W. Coble Respectfully announces to the citizens of Sunbury and vicinity, that he has opened a Daguerrean Room.  The most artistical attention will be given to position; also in equalizing the light and shade on the face, so as to give every life-like expression, and entirely obviate the flat cadaverous appearance so common to Daguerreotypes.  Persons having unsatisfactory pictures taken by incompetent operators, or those wishing to obtain good miniatures, of themselves and friends are invited to embrace this opportunity, as he will remain but a few weeks.

His room is at the old place, in the Grand Jury Room, (County Buildings.)  Operating hours from 8 A. M., until 5 P. M., without regard to weather. 

The second announcement appeared on April 22, 1854.  Daguerreotypes.—Geo. W. Coble is again in town, prepared to take likenesses.  Pay his gallery a visit.

The fourth advertisement ran from April 22 to September 23, 1854.  Daguerreotypes!  George W. Coble, Respectfully announces to the citizens of Sunbury and vicinity, that he has again opened a Daguerrean Room, and is prepared to take likenesses.  He warrants his pictures to be satisfactory to all wishing true representations of themselves and friends.  Special attention is paid to children.  Copies taken with accuracy.  Instructions given on reasonable terms.  His room is at the old place, in the Grand Jury Room, (county building,) operating hours from 8 A. M. until 5 P. M., without regard to the state of the weather.  Copies should be sent in on cloudy days. 

The fifth advertisement ran from March 31 to May 5, 1855.  A Lot of Chemicals for Sale by Geo. W. Coble, Daguerreotypist.  German Bromine, Chloride of Iodine, do. Do. dry, Hypo Sulphate of Soda, Caynide of Potassyum, distilled Mercury, liquid quick and Gilding.  He has also a Daguerreotyping apparatus, a full set, which he will sell at a reasonable price.  He has also a variety of specimens from town and country, which he will sell at half price, also cases and mats, all of which he will sell as cheap  as they can be bought in the city. 

George W. Coble is recorded in Directory Of Pennsylvania Photographers 1839-1900 as being active in Sunbury, Pennsylvania without an address or activity dates.

Victor Bishop was recorded in twenty advertisements, seventeen in The New York Herald and three in the New York Tribune the first advertisement appeared on October 7, 1847 in The New York Herald.  Daguerreotype Plates—For sale at cost prices, to close an invoice, a lot of best French Daguerreotype Plates, H S and Double Griset.  Apply to Victor Bishop, 12 Maiden Lane, up stairs.

The second appeared on March 24, 1847 in Herald.  To Daguerrian Artists—Louis L. Bishop’s Daguerreotype Plates, warranted to give to portraits a richer tone than any other plates, are for sale at Victor Bishop’s, Importer, 23 maiden Lane, N. Y.

The third advertisement appeared on April 10, 1851 in the New York Daily Tribune. Daguerreotype.—The Scale Plates.—These Plates are warranted to be perfect and to give to the Daguerrian impression a richer look than any others.  The subscriber is agent for the French Manufacturers, and will sell them with the privilege of returning any that would not give the most complete satisfaction.  Victor Bishop. 23 maiden-lane.

The fourth advertisement ran from April 23 to 30, 1850 in the Herald.  Important to Daguerrean Artists.

To Mr. Victor Bishop, No. 23 Maiden lane, N. Y.  Dear Sir—We cheerfully testify that we have used for some time Louis L. Bishop’s plates, and that they are decidedly superior to all others, either imported or manufactured here.  Beckers & Piard, 201 Broadway.

Those plates are marked in full with the name of Louis L. Bishop, and are for sale only at Victor Bishop’s, No. 23 Maiden Lane.

The fifth advertisement ran from May 3 to June 1, 1850 in the Herald.  Daguerreotype Plates—Lewis L. Bishop’s Plates, acknowledged superior to all others, for sale by Victor Bishop, 23 Maiden lane.

The sixth advertisement appeared on August 9, 1851 in the Tribune.  To Daguerrean Artists.—The coat of silver deposited on the Scale-plates is thicker than that on the French plates 40; and as they are electro plated, all that silver is chemically pure, an advantage which cannot be to much appreciated.  We have no hesitation to warrant them as perfect, and as giving to the Daguerrean impressions a richer tone than can be obtained on any other.  For sale at the sole Agent’s, Victor Bishop, 23 Maiden-lane.

The seventh advertisement appeared on August 14, 1851 in the Tribune.  Daguerreotype.—Great improvements have recently been made in the fabrication of electro-plated plates.  We earnestly request all Daguerrean Artists, especially those who have previously used plates manufactured under this process, to examine and try the Scale Plates.  They are sold with the special guarantee that they will give full satisfaction, being perfect in every respect.  Victor Bishop, 23 Maiden-lane.

The next twelve advertisements are all from The New York Herald.  No. 8 ran from September 17 to 24, 1850.  Daguerreotype Plates—Great Reduction in price.  We are now enabled to sell Louis L. Bishop’s plates, at $30 per hundred, full size.  They are warranted superior to any other, and sold with the privilege of returning those that would not give entire satisfaction.  Victor Bishop, 23 Maiden lane, up stairs.

No. 13 ran from August 15 to 22, 1851.  Daguerreotype.—First Rate Plates Must be plated with a sufficient thickness of pure silver, the purer the better, and their surface must be perfectly smooth and even.  The scale plates combine these advantages to the utmost.  The cost of silver deposited on these plates is thicker than that on the French plates, 40th; and as they are electroplated, all that silver is chemically pure, an advantage which cannot be too much appreciated.  They are warranted perfect.  For sale, at the sole agent’s.  Victor Bishop, No. 23 Maiden lane.

No. 14 ran from November 5 to December 23, 1851.  Daguerreotype.—Great Improvements In Electro-plated Plates.—Just received. an invoice of full size Scale Plates; Medium sizes expected by next steamer.  Our arrangements are such that we will soon be constantly able to fulfil all orders we may receive for these improved plates, whose success has greatly superseded our provisions.  To those who have not tried them we shall say, that they are perfectly smooth and even, take and easy polish, and that they have the immense advantage of a thick coat of chemically pure silver.  Every plate is warranted perfect.  For sale at the sole agent’s.  Victor Bishop, 23 Maiden lane.

No. 15 ran from March 3 to 16, 1852.  Daguerreotype—Just Received A Full stock of Scale Plates, all sizes.  These plates are used exclusively by the best Daguerrean Artists.  They are warranted to take a better impression than any other plate, and to give complete satisfaction in every respect.  Retail prices, full size, $12 a dozen; smaller sizes in proportion.  Liberal discount to the trade.  Address Victor Bishop, 23 Maiden lane.

No. 18 appeared on August 18, 1852.  Daguerreotype.—The Best Plates Yet.—We publish the following letter, highly interesting to all Daguerrean artists, and signed by well known members of the profession.—New York, August 16, 1852.  Victor Bishop, Esq., 23 Maiden lane.—Dear Sir,–the scale plates have been introduced to us about eighteen months, and we have used them exclusively since October last.  We have no hesitation in saying that since that time they have given us entire satisfaction. They are the only plates we have found of perfectly pure silver.  This advantage with that of a well polished surface, renders them superior, in our estimation, to all other plates in the market.  They do not require to be galvanized, and are safer and of better use than the best plates we had before, although we galvanized them ourselves.  By using them, we spare a good deal of time, and are always sure of portraits with bold and sharp outlines.  Beckers & Piard.  N.
